Restored 1994 Kyosho Tracker for my son.

Recommended Posts

I bought this just before I started college, and it's been sitting in my parents' shed for a while until I dug it out a couple of years ago to save for my son.

This was the state of the truck when I dug it out of the shed

First thing I did was get some new tires.  I just bought Tamiya Blackfoot tires as they were the same size.

I replaced the old mechanical speed controller with resistor with the Tamiya TBLE-02 ESC.

Replaced Ni-Cad battery with a 3000Mah NiMH battery.

Replaced Kyosho Pulsar Pro 2000 + receiver combo with Sanwa MX-V Transmitter with RX-371W receiver.

The Mabuchi 550 motor it came with was a goner, so I just replaced it with a Tamiya silver can that I had lying around.

Next I went about replacing the body.  Only body I could find was a TBG Reproduction for the Kyosho USA-1 and Tracker. My son really likes Pixar Cars so... printed out some decals.

Here are the results.

The Tracker shares the chassis with the the Kyosho Hi-Rider 2 (nothing in common with the orig. Hi-Rider Chevrolet Corvette) and it's basically a racing buggy so it is super fun! The crystal ball says your son is going to LOVE the truck :D

Nice! I wasn't a fan of the Tracker back then, because of the huge gap between the chassis and the body, it looked too much like a converted buggy (which of course it was). But now, it looks charming and retro, and makes me want to build an old-school truck conversion.

That is exactly how I felt when I got it, but what I did back then was I had cut out 2 lexan plates to wall off the sides.  I plan to potentially revisiting that again and doing a better job of it this time around.
