Hello,

Can you run one of these cars if you remove the center torque splitter?

I've felt the Egress doesnt brake as hard as my other 4wd's (Blazing Star, Thundershot). Is this because of the the torque splitter?

I would say go ahead and try it.Why not? The car might tend to push a little while cornering, but other than that,I can't see much differance. If you go ahead and do this, why not post what you found out so we will all know?

70% of braking on a car is through the front tires.

The Egress came with parts to allow you to lock the centre shaft torque splitter, so that's what you want to do - lock it.

Hi El Mexican,

I had a similar problem on my Avante2001, in fact made worse because I was running a Dyna Run super touring which generates so much torque that the handling was awful with the center diff.

My Avante2001 had a ball diff in the center and I simply glued it up which gave me far better traction and better braking. I tried simply tightening up which usually works but in this case it needs proper locking) These cars had excessive oversteer anyway so locking the center diff up actually makes the car more neutral - well I prefer it that way anyway.

I guess the torque splitter that your talking about is the center diff? Is it just a ball diff that you can tighten to adjust the split of power from front to back? I don't have an Egress but I'm sure that the Avante2001 never came with a ball diff in the center so I think mine must have been the upgraded one from the Egress?

Cheers,

Ian

Noooooo! That's such a crime. The centre diff contributes to the smooth handling.

Anyway, the avante 2001 DID INDEED come with the centre balldiff, but the EGRESS came with the centre one-way.

Basicly what you did with the Egress one-way was you replaced the one-way bearing with a plastic part if I remember correctly, this plastic part would lock off the shaft that goes in the centre of the one-way.

If you want to lock the one-way bearing it's located at the rear end of the prop shaft, I believe it's just a case of replacing it with a plastic part as Ideal2k said.

LOL, Ideal2k I can hear you cries of pain but seriously the car just wouldn't run over a dirt track without the center being locked up. The Dyna Run super touring motor and 8.4v combined put out so much torque that the car would sit still with just ONE wheel spinning!!! By locking the center up I at least got a decent percentage of torque going thru the front drivetrain as well....

If you think that is bad....

I also fitted a new ball diff in the rear and tightened that right up to form an LSD which means I can now get the power down nicely. [;)]

The handling remains excellent, my Avante2001 must rank as one of the best handling Tamiya cars I have ever driven as long as you only run it on smoothish dirt tracks or tarmac. In fact I love the handling on tarmac where it totally outclasses most touring cars (with the diff unlocked) [8D] Sadly I've just had so many bad experiences with breakages on this car that it doesn't get used in anger as much as I'd like. It is quite a heavy beasty though, you'd think it would be really lightweight looking at it in pics but it weighs stacks more than my old thundershots etc.

Thank you very much for your replies.

Since I got the car secondhand, I wont be able to replace the part your talking about.

The Egress is an interesting beast: full-throttle in a straight it rides beautifully. Even the front tires go up in the air when a good amount of power is aplied!

The problem Ive encountered has to do with handling in curvy circuits. The word to describe it would be unpredictable.

I am currently offering all the parts to lock the Egress centre one way on Ebay if you are still interested.
