Can someone tell me if this is a good 2wd model or just a novice play car.

Fast 2wd buggy racer on dirt. Not a looker or a top-of-the-line model but a really nice dirt runner. If you're buying a used one, be sure to check the differentials as the diff is usually the problem with these. Cheers ;)

Mongoose is right. They're light and quick in stock form. Add oil filled shocks and maybe the metal motor plate from the Astute and the car could give an RC10 of the same era a run for its money.

Ball races and oil shocks would be my first upgrades..

I would also rebuild the Ball differential with some quality ball diff grease..

Honestly, if you aren't too concerned about looks, Tamiya CVA shocks work great, shorts for the rear, minis for the front. On the last Madcap I salvaged, I used the Tamiya DT02/DT03 full damper set 54567 in combination with the stock springs. It was fairly inexpensive.

I have just restored my vintage madcap. As above people have suggested ball bearings and oil shocks. I stripped and cleaned the gearbox and used schumacher silicon ball diff grease. I have put some 3Racing alloy shocks on mine, some adjustable turnbuckles for a DT02, Replaced the stupid coat hanger wire that connects to two steering arms with ball joints and an adjustable turnbuckle to take out the sloppyness. Also I replaced the plastic supports in the gearbox with metal astute ones and replaced the motor plate with an Astute one. I used modern 2.2 wheels with Schumacher mini pins tyres on vintage racing. I finished it off with a TGB body off ebay. :)

Forgot to say, this is riding on a brand new Chassis, new front and rear bumpers, newish front bulkhead, new wing support, new battery supports.

Might have to vinyl wrap the underside as its nice and shiny and not that scratched.
