Re-releases for 05

Recommended Posts

Well said James[^]

I hope that the collector market can have an influence on tamiyas thinking. I think too many times in the toy industry companies are scrambling to find another "big hit", the problem with this is that what they base the "big hit" on is usually the top record breaking seller. I am sure mattel is looking for another barbie, or playmates is looking for another hit as big as the original Ninja turtles. So i imagine that tamiya is looking for another 500,000 plus selling car. So they often will disregard a potential smaller seller.

I know that the bottom line is what dictates what these large companies are willing to put into production, but at the same time look at guys like Todd McFarlane (Spawn) and the quality he puts into his production models. He has changed the action figure market. So maybe if tamiya did rerelease some of the classics with the incredible detail of the 3 speed or the Sand scorcher, perhaps it would help broaden the appreciation for the highly detailed Rc cars that makes most of us go crazy.

So go for it tamiya make us all happy release either one of the rare classics or something new with the level of detail that you put into the classics. The hard bodies and the scale realism is what i want[;)]

I just wonder if you were faced with a choice between a re-relesed early classic (sand scorcher, superchamp or similar) or a new car with and old school scale and realism feel, what would we all choose?

I think part of the demand for re-releases is the fact that the modern off roaders don't seem to fire the imagination in the way the oldies did. A reissue sand scorcher would be a definate buy for me but the idea of a totally new car is possibly more exciting.

Don't get me wrong the DF-02 chassis cars look like they would be great to build and run but their looks seem a compromise to accomodate the chassis. The vintage buggies seemed to be looks first, then make the chassis fit later.

Anyone have any thoughts on this [?]

my two cents-

1. Sand Scorcher (old or updated chassis)

2. Lunch Box (new chassis-longer ww2?)

3. Volkswagen Beetle M-chassis (M04-L)

4. 3-speed or XC with new Toyota Tacoma body

ok Tamiya, get to work.

At least with a Grasshopper re-release, there'll be plenty of Paddletracks to go around.....

(That's assuming they do use the original rears...)

If its true about the GrassHopper.....Im very happy. I just pray that its equipped with paddle tires like the original.

because of the Hornet re-realease, I can now have new wheels and tires for my Super Champ....paddle tires for my Sand Scorchers would be FANTASTIC.!!

Also....I would be HIGHLY sceptacle of any SRB or 3 speed re-release.....sadly as it may be. the cost would just be too expensive. But ....with that said, I challenge Tamiya to proove me wrong, shut me up, and make alot of people happy.....(with the exception of those of us that have paid rediculous amounts of money to restore these things.)[:P]

I'm new to this forum and so my opinion will most likely be taken very lightly, but i'll throw it in anyway.

When i was growing up there were a great number of kits i would have dearly loved to own. I am now able to realise some of my dreams by collecting kits i gave away as a teenager not realising for a second their coming value - Escort RS for example.

But there are a couple of points i just don't get. Take the Lunchbox; here is a kit i would love to own but can't justfiy the price of a NIB. From my point of view it would therefore be great news if Tamiya re-released it, but if they did, it would need to be exactly as the original was. An updated, new chassis version is of no real value to me. Tamiya might as well release the bodyset and let us all by Pumpkins, that would be truer to the original.

Also, i admit i have been collecting some of my kits as investments to hand on to my child when he/she grows up (my partner is due in August). For this reason, i reckon a lot of you are frustrated that your $300+ is more or less thrown away when Tamiya re-release a kit you saved long and hard for. I know i would be if they re-released the Cosworth whale tail or TA01 chassis. If the re-release like the TT01 Escort WRC, was different to the original then no, your kit would probably increase in value but that Escort i am not looking upon as a re-release, becuase in my humble opinion it isn't. It's a new kit with an old body on it.

My 2 cents:

If you consider the re-releases so far, Tamiya has seemingly picked from some of the more popular original releases and some not so popular. The 311 I dont think was a huge seller when it was released back in 78 or 79 when it came out. The Lancia 037 I dont think was all that popular either, but now the Horner was sold by the thousands. It just seems so unpredictable as to what they might do next. My opinion about the scorcher is this, I dont think the expense of reproducing it is the problem, the did it once they can do it again. If they were to re-release the scorcher it would either have to be just like the original (unlikely) or it would be an updated more modern type of chassis with a simple design and a shell that would closely if not exactly replicate the original. At least I would hope they dont stamp out a MB shell with scorcher decals and call it a scorcher. If you look at the WW2, it was very similar to the original but had subtle differences. Same with the lancia, very similar but has subtle differences from the original. But.... the new Lancia 037 shell was a completely new mold and not a re use of the old mold. Which was fine with me since it was more realistic anyway. The original scorcher chassis sits with a very high ground clearance and there is no current chassis that I can think of that would accomodate that look of the original. My guess is if the Scorcher were re released it would have similarities but would be quite different from the original. As far as the Lancia re-release, I dont think they intended it on becoming a huge seller. It was after all a "limited release". So who knows, the Scorcher might come back or it might not. I just hope if it does make its way back to market it serves more as form than function. It was always the detail that got me interested and not so much the function. But I have to say the SRB water tight radio box was super cool. And running mine in the mud with no fear of my radio parts getting wet was comforting if not a blast to run! But somehow I dont see it happening. If nothing else, it would be cool if Tamiya released the original Scorcher shell just like they re-released the Countach shell. I can tell you from someone who has restored 4 original countach shells and I also finished 3 re-release countach shells, there is absolutely no difference in the two. With the exception of the pre painted tail lights on the original Countach shell and the re-release comes clear.

Guess we just have to wait and see.

In my opinion when they re-release any car it should have the same chassis and body tires etc.. It should be just like the kit you bought back in the 80's. They already had an upgrade to the ss chassis(Monster beetle) same with the ranger(blackfoot). The WW2 had a Ford style grill and not a Willys grill. I know that if Tamiya was to re-release the Sand Scorcher as it was 20 years ago they would sell alot of them I know I would buy 1.I am not going to buy a re-release hornet but I am sure I would buy a re-release Sand Scorcher if it was the same as it was 20 years ago.

Personally I'd run the re-issues as origionals are always going to be more valuable / desireable, and lets face it a re-issue Sand Scorcher is pretty unlikely, and is bound to be a bit of a disapointment (as dephcon5 pointed out). I'd expect it to be a gravel hound with MB shell [;)].
