Sammo 479 Posted October 11, 2017 Evening, Over the last few months I've been buying all the rolling chassis' of the cars I wanted when I was a kid but couldn't afford. These included a TA01, TA02, TA03, M01 and an FF01. The TA's and M01 I have eventual plans for, but the FF01 I bought to turn into a speed run car. I already own another FF01 Ford Mondeo but it's a shelf queen and I don't want to run it. So for the last few months I've been desperately keeping an eye out for another FF01 that wasn't extortionately expensive or completely knackered. I eventually got bored of waiting and paid over the odds for one from Italy It arrived last week and looked like this.
Sammo 479 Posted October 11, 2017 While waiting for the FF to arrive I happened across an FRP chassis kit for not a lot of money, so got that bought too!
Sammo 479 Posted October 11, 2017 Originally the plan hadn't been to use the FRP chassis for the FF01 but it kinda made sense once I had them both sitting there so I figured I'd give it a go. Once it was together I unpacked my Hop-Up Black Rally Dish wheels, fitted up some tyres and put them on. That's it for today. Now I need to have a think about what hop ups I'm going to do and start spending some money. If anyone has any suggestions on what will help make it a successful speed run car it will be greatly appreciated
LeftyAl 164 Posted October 12, 2017 Nice car. I ran a 4000kV brushless in my FF01 FRP. Seemed to fry tyres quite quickly. Was just a little bit too powerful but heaps of fun to drive.
Percymon 2184 Posted October 12, 2017 I'd look at the bodies available first - there might not be an awful lot that aerodynamically fits the speed run title. You might want to put some 3M paint protection film on the underside of the chassis to protect the fibre plates. Also think about damper settings - piston holes and oil weight - you probably want relatively soft and fast reaction speed on something speed biased (dependent upon how smooth a surface you can run on)

How fast do you want to go? 4000kv won't scratch the surface on a 2s lipo.

Sammo 479 Posted October 15, 2017 I'm currently waiting for pay day to order a few bits for this, however I've been on the lookout for an FF01 motor heat sink for ages. I was watching one on eBay which then sold, but this morning I managed to find one in Canada. With shipping to the UK it actually worked out cheaper than buying the eBay one from the UK! As I didn't want to miss out on this one I have stretched this months finances and bought it!

Just the fastest FF01 will do for now
Sammo 479 Posted October 15, 2017 Can anyone help get my head around the gearing. My brain doesn't work when it comes to things like this. For high speed runs am I correct in thinking I want the smaller spur gear and the biggest pinion that will fit?

Yes that's it's Sammo.... let us know what you are going to fit... we should really tag in @phil h to ask what his FF01 ran to get his 52.2MPH. I just got myself an FF01 off from a TC member so I'm watching your thread with a keen eye... I was weighing up trying to speed run mine too! Mine was bought as a roller and looks all stock, I just love the way out front motor with zero weight on the back wheels. Regarding the heat sink I saw a NIP one in the UK for just under £30 a week or so ago... sounds like a good idea if your going fast

I got mine for £60 I think, not too bad, it's such a nice looking chassis too.. like a stretched M03. To be fair I need to beat Phil's FF01, just like my Blitzer Beetle beat his Stadium Blitzer ( wind up mode off).

Phil_H 418 Posted October 16, 2017 Don't make me buy another FF01 lol.... I think I squeezed a 30t 48dp pinion in, but they don't mesh to well with the stock spur. I ended up with a 28 or 29t. You'll beat my speed if you get a decent motor and 3s, the only thing I found with mine was that the back end got really twitchy at 50mph+ Oh....and Foams are your friend to get the power down Good luck, keep us updated.
Sammo 479 Posted October 21, 2017 While waiting for the F1 qualifying to start I thought I'd do a couple of bits to the FF using bits I already have. When I was building my TA02 Widetrack I ordered a pair of UJ's for it. When they turned up they were wrong and I didn't send them back. It occurred to me today that they might fit the FF, so I tried them. Annoyingly the axles are too long so that idea was a no go. Seeing as I had the front apart I decided to fit my front wishbone bars (can't think of the proper term!) that I'd bought for my TA02 but decided they'd be better off here. While taking it apart I spotted a ball diff in there That's my TA02 and FF01 that have both come with ball diffs without me realising! The bars were really tight to get through the chassis, but after some persuasion they were in. I don't know if they make any difference but they're something different to the norm so I'm happy Payday is only 4 days away so I can then order a few more bits I've got my eye on
Sammo 479 Posted October 22, 2017 While looking over the rear end earlier I spotted the rear shock mounts are cracked! I started stripping it down and found stones jammed in everything too. I've managed to find a complete B parts tree in the Netherlands which is now winging its way to me
Sammo 479 Posted October 24, 2017 I had a few bits turn up today. First, my chosen body. I have had this one in mind for about a year. I've got a Mondeo British Touring Car so I fancied a Cavalier touring car too My aluminium king pins, aluminium servo mounts, motor heat sink and tyre foams all arrived too Tomorrow is pay day so another order will be going in for a load more bits
t3garett 268 Posted October 26, 2017 Just a thought but.... last time I ran 26mm wheels with tamiya super grip slicks on and those inner foams you just purchased with a 9t brushless setup I had a problem with the tires balooning (spinning so fast that the foam inside tries to fly off and pushes the center of the tire upwards) thus making the car lift and beggin to catch air. Don t know if anyone else had had this problem but since your looking for outright speed it could be something to look into. Love the build !
