FF01 FRP Speed Run Build

Recommended Posts

For speed you could consider using foam tyres if that's what's it's only use will be.

Ive seen RC Contact pre mounted foams for as little as £6-7 for a 26mm front set and same again in 30mm if you wanted a wider rear tyre, all on 12mm hex wheels.

I think I will try a set soon, maybe 35 Shore on the rear and 45 front.

I'll probably see how it goes with a set of slicks to begin with and then work from there.

I had a few more bits arrive today, and I also ordered a few more bits. This is starting to get expensive haha!

I decided to do a couple of bits before dinner this evening.

I fitted the universal joints and the aluminium king pins. The quality of both is really good and a much better fit than the bits they replaced.

I also fitted my aluminium servo mounts. Slowly but surely it's coming together :)

Excuse the dust hehe.

Its still looking a little sad with no rear end!

Ebay. They're listed as being for TA03/FF03 and newer but they fit most I tend to find.

So I’ve been bidding against you on ff01 bits? Haha. Have a look at my restoration build in the vintage forum. I’m almost done with it. Last unintended part is in the post right now!

for reference you could have used tamiya cc01 cvd’s (universals) they drop straight in. Cc01 knuckles work too if you want some black plastic ones or to source alloy units.

if you replace the upper arms with adjustable ones then you’ll come across the issue of flexy lower arms that cause the caster to change dramatically when the suspension compresses. So really adjustable upper arms come with the need for alloy lower arms. “Or” you’ll need tech racing stabilizers.

I have a rear tech racing stabilizing setup NIP I’m probably not going to use. E633EACA-1521-432F-A461-9D4D5ED25B35.jpeg.386ea322cf18d923cda6770ad467c7ba.jpeg

My steering servo was delivered yesterday, however I have no idea where it's been delivered to! No note left by the postman to indicate what he's done with it and Royal Mail have said it will take ten working days to investigate. So that's £40 down the drain by the look of it

I'm also still waiting for the rear chassis parts to arrive so I can get the car back on all four wheels! Once a few more bits get here I can do a complete mock up build and then strip it, clean and grease everything and then do the final build :)

Looking good. A few more parts for Myn have arrived. Last few pieces of the puzzle. Hopefully get it finished off shortly. More and more pieces of my ff02 and ff03 projects have been slowly arriving.  I feel your pain with the parcels, nothing worse than the tracking saying delivered but it’s nowhere to be seen.

Great Build!

Can anyone help? I've seen a few of these speed run threads around, but when searching I've not been able to find a source for the challenge, is this just a phenomenon which has evolved over time here at TA or is there a place where all the challenge submissions can be found?

I figured as I've got a reasonable amount of bits here I should fit them up. Started with the aluminium body mount bracket and aluminium rear knuckles. I fitted the hop up axles and made up some (very) short turnbuckles.

I think I might need to make some slightly longer turnbuckles haha!

I thought I'd drop the (uncut) body over the chassis just to see how it was gonna look. Annoyingly the wheelbase of the chassis is a few mm too short. After a bit of research I've found out that the FF01 has two wheelbase options and I've reassembled it in the shorter of the two! So I'll take it apart again at some point and lengthen the wheelbase again!

I decided I should sort the wheelbase out tonight.

I turned the shock tower around and moved the chassis mount to the LWB co figuration.

The only problem now is the gap it leaves between the shock tower and chassis mount. I'll have to find something to fill the gap!

This is the main thread for speed runs.

Thanks!

BTW... Loving your build - it makes me want to do something crazy with an old FWD M chassis I've got lying around...

Once this is done and FF01 speed run record has been beaten I'll start building my M01 into a speed run chassis too :)

I got a bit more done this evening. I realised I'd fitted the shock tower ******* about face so had to switch that round and add a couple of extra spacers to fill the gaps between the shock tower and chassis mount.

Once that was all sorted the wheelbase was looking just right :)

24295197618_8627eded03_b.jpg24295216668_ac43f0ef05_b.jpg37437511124_914b0ef1b8_b.jpg

I then decided to cut out the body. This is one of the most hateful jobs for me. I don't have a good eye for cutting straight so it's a nerve wracking time haha.

Anyway, I got it cut out to an acceptable standard and then just about managed to get the post holes in the right place.

I think it looks pretty mean and with the extreme camber on the rear wheels it looks quite Touring car esque.

That's some serious rear wheel camber.

I'm down for some FWD battles. But..  I...   umm.... I just have to build my M05 first. Been sitting in the box for about 4 months now. Definitely looking forward to seeing what your FF01 will do.

Cool! I'll be watching for that build too - I have only tried my M03 a few times and hated the FWD - it just had no grip at all!! But now I've seen some of the FF speed run videos I'm amazed at how much grip they seem to have...

Looking good. I looked at that rear shock tower on eBay for ages, but it didn’t go with any of my blue parts so I thought I wouldn’t bother.  Will probably just put in a cross brace on the tower to combat the flex.

Consider a top force hinge pin kit, will look way better than those rusty screw in jobs.  Alternatively the gpm TA02 arms I used came with there own stainless steel hinge pins. Front TA02 arms need 1mm skimming off them to maintain ff02 wheelbase.

If you don’t want to use the U pin up front you’ll need to put some kind of cross brace to stop the front arms just ripping the lower gear case to pieces on a small impact. The stock U pin is spring steel and will pretty much prevent you damaging the lower gear case at the expensive of the arms.

the lower gear case is basically impossible to buy now, I saw one sell for $85 recently (yes just the A parts) You can bet that person wasn’t running the U pin.

Loving the build, have you decided on the ESC and Motor yet?

I'm gonna use the Trackstar brushless Motor that I originally bought for my TA02 Widetrack. It's a 7.5t so should give it a decent shove.

Ill buy a suitable speed controller once the chassis is all done :)

Oh and I've been in contact with Ko Paintz regarding painting the body for me. There's a particular livery I want for this and he's gonna sort that for me :)
