Hi,

Just dropped by for a bit of advice, I have today dug out my 30 year old lunchbox to show my young kids how much fun rc cars are.

So lots of questions as i have been off this scene for a few years lol. so the original tyres have splits in them, so would folk recommend putting some different tyres on or get hold of some original ones, also do people still use foam fillers or is there something else out there.

the front shock has broken away from the arm, at this point would you recommend a new oil filled shocker set or get some of the original spring shock back on?

needles to say im buying the kids something else to practice on as its rather cringy watching them smash my fav toy of many moons ago into cars, kerbs and the odd wall as they cant grasp that it the cars facing you left is right lol. so my lunchbox is going to be my new fun project.

for a 30 year + car it runs really well apart from the broken bits, so what has everybody else done to make the lunchbox even more fun?

cheers

There's a mountain of info on here about suspension mods that are available for the lunchbox, which people more knowledgeable than me will I'm sure post some details about. The good news is that the lunchbox is still being sold as a re-release, so spare parts are plentiful and readily available. For the tires, just get some re-release ones, don't bother trying to find 30yr old ones, newer ones will be softer and more supple, and cheaper.

If you haven't bought the kids anything yet the Tamiya GF-01 dump truck is very tough and a fun machine to drive, same sort of size as a LB, but with 4wd and double wishbone suspension all round, or a another good 1st learner car is the Mad Bull

One thing that you may want to consider while your boys are learning to drive is a slower motor... There are a number of companies (RC4WD. HPI, Axial, Carson) that make inexpensive 55 turn motors... With a 55 turn motor, the speed is approx. half that of the kit 540 motor, but the runtime on a battery charge will be almost double that of the kit 540 motor.. These 55 turn motors are the same size (i.e. 540 size) as the kit motor, so they can be swapped over with minimal effort and time..

Rimmer you should put up that old Lunchbox so she doesn't get hurt, build her back up a bit at a time. Buy a re-release Lunchbox and mod the badword out of it.

Oil shocks are a start but on their own don't help much. Add a front strut brace and an Ampro gearbox brace and you're in business. Run hard springs up front and soft as you can find in the back. The Blackfoot 2016 shock set is great for this with the brass springs up front.

For a little more power get a Tamiya Sport Tuned brushed motor. For even more go brushless with a motor rating over 2500kv. If you want to get ridiculous speed put an 18 tooth Hornet pinion on it and experience 25-30+mph.

A lexan body is a great mod that will bring your center of gravity down a lot. It also soaks up damage better than the heavy abs body.

Get your kids some dt02/03's or a TT02b and use their cars as ramps for your Lunchbox. Or get them Lunchboxes too and enjoy destruction derby.

Good luck breaking the Lunchbox though, they're very hardy trucks.

Haha sounds exactly like me, I was a huge RC addict when I was younger. Had a Toyota Celica GRB which I sold but thats another story!

More recently after buying cheap Nikkos for my sons birthday and him instantly being disappointed, I saw a lunchbox on a facebook sale page for £40 with everything and snapped it up straight away.

I fully expected this for my son to play with but I got attached now its mine, Since then he has an FTX carnage and is actually very good at controlling RC cars and I let him play with my lunchbox!

Since then we have brought a midnight pumpkin another lb and I have built myself a DT-03 neo fighter and I have a Kyosho Sandmaster on the way!

love it!

Oh the slippery slope. 1 car, 2 car, 3 car BOOM your at 20 scratching the inside of your arms lookibg bcc for your next build. I started with a Vintage Wild Willy to relive my youth, now I have 29 cars, down from 37. Best of luck. Lol
