Lancia 037 Rally Body - On TA02-S chassis?

Recommended Posts

I’ve got a small wheel arch shell on its way in the post, which cost a bit to purchase.  The plan was to widen the arches (somehow, carefully...) and create an 80s Tamiya rally car. If they re-re it with oversized tyres, I’ll also explode.....

I have seen Lancia box-art before, but I sure love seeing it again anyway

Details will be pretty straightforward as the 911 GT2 TA02SW. TA02S plastic tub chassis with 540 motor, tble-02s esc, probably include ball bearings. Body will be the Lancia 037 Rally that was on the TA03R-S / 84355 body set along with the same wheels chrome plated wheels on the TA03R-S kit, and semi-slicks.

If they are feeling generous, they may throw in a driver figure.

Tam usa has it priced at $227 which is a $1 more than the 911GT2 kit.

I know it looks totally bizarre but I would have loved it to be the original Tamiya orv chassis lancia 037 rally;)

Thirded!  I have a ‘small wheel arch’ shell ta03-rs shell, am hoping to convert it to the old school big wheel arch shell. Has anyone done this conversion to the wheel arches? Any tips? Thanks :)

Agree.. very far from bizarre my friend 👍 i have been hoping for yrs for this tamiya lancia kit to be re-released again. This chassis setup that can handle more of those rough bumps. Im surprised and have no idea why it has'nt had a re-re run on a frog or brat chassis, and it wouldn't be hard to do.. Never been a  re-re production run for the shared wild willy 1, opel ascona, Audi Quattro chassis cars sadly, but tamiya should at least bring this back into production again from our childhood rally days.. Lancia.

If this release comes with the same box & artwork as the 58278 kit shown below then I am in. However if it just comes in the usual miniature box with a sticker slapped on it then count me out. Unfortunately I think it will be the latter.

I'd like to see Tamiya re-release the Audi Quattro body on something. Perhaps we will see it on a TA02S in the near future

From TamiyaUSA:

"This R/C assembly kit replicates the Lancia Rally 037 as raced in the early 1980s. The highly-detailed body is made of durable ABS plastic and it sits on top of Tamiya's TA-02 S chassis.

"The Lancia body is specifically mounted on a TA-02 variant. Known as the TA-02S, this version exhibits a short wheelbase to accommodate the scale form of the real sports car. It features a tub chassis with 4-wheel, fully-independent suspension coupled with a rear ball differential and a front gear type differential."

I feel like this definitively rules out an original-style re-release (as if it was ever a question!), though the specification has me thinking this version will be a superior rally car to the TA-03RS version. That was probably not the reason the TA-02 was chosen, given the recent TA-02SW reissue, but I would like to believe this new chassis will make for a better runner - second only to the original Lancia Rally, of course ;)

I would be lying if I said I was not totally fired-up for this release. Such a model is one compelling reason for me to return to the hobby; if I can only afford one, so be it, though outside of the Honda City Turbo this is the only model I would love to duplicate in a collection!

I think this will be a rather nice addition to the fleet. Also hoping they re-re the body and decals again. I need decals!

It will definitely be worth a build....but will it be worth driving?

Lancias are simply gorgeous...whatever the model or spec.

Odd to make a 2wd car a 4wd! Tamiya "new model department" have taken leave of their senses....again lol

1:1 chassis layouts do not translate to RC so easily, especially to rwd.  The problem is weight transfer for traction. In a 1:1 you can have 50:50 weight distribution by having the motor in front and gas tank and transaxle in rear to balance

In RC you have an electric motor and battery, esc, radio components. Tamiya has tried multiple combos and learned that rwd only works with a: a pan car / F1 car, b: buggy layout with motor hanging out back M06, c: drift chassis.

Tamiya had multiple failed attempts at rwd chassis, M02, M04 as most recent.  Only a handful of individuals were able to get them to drive consistently.

Now The original 037 was on the 2wd orv chassis  which in my opinion was the biggest pile of horse dirt Tamiya ever made (my first Tamiya)

The beautiful fragile abs bodies were damaged within seconds on the unstable orv chassis.

So on its second iteration, they decided to use a stable 4wd chassis, which I think is a wise choice.

yeah 4wd is the way to go for something like this that was originally rwd. Unlike my Laguna BTCC replica and the FF03 chassis(front motor and fwd) which translates very well indeed, even on lift off oversteer you can get the front back round under power just like the real thing. Rwd doesn't translate well Imo to r/c unless on super sticky tires and on a super smooth/indoor surface, F103/F104, RM01. The only exception I have found is the Tamiya Group C chassis which Imo is awesome in a parking lot as it is on a super smooth surface, its seems to be not so super stiff which helps alot.

James.

Looking forward to this one .. I'd be surprised, given the boxart, if the cockpit set wasn't included. Just wouldn't be right without it.

I think it's a missed opportunity that the cockpit set doesn't model the 037's visible engine/motor. I've never bought the cockpit set because I think it's more at home in an Integrale.

I think it's ONLY at home in an Escort RS Cosworth, what with the separate clock cluster on the dash and the O.Z. Racing spare wheel behind the driver!

What we really need is one of Tamiyaclubs resident 3D experts to create a range of correct cockpits for each of the rally and touring bodies.😄

If you really want RWD, with the TA02 it's easy enough: just omit the front half of the drivetrain. Leave out the front gearbox internals, center drive shaft, and front dogbones. Voila: rear wheel drive.

But seal up the openings in the front gearbox housing before you hit the dirt. Then you can install the rest of the parts later, after you're tired of doing donuts. :)
