A stunning example, for sure!

Still waiting for a release date to be announced, as well as any pre-order information... Despite seeing some great prices, I am putting aside a Boomerang or Hotshot for this!

Too bad it's 4wd. This was a RWD car. I won't be buying this. Body is cool, but not the chassis.

YOu can always leave the shaft out and hey presto, RWD,

I was just going to say this too, and as I recall (from a previous discussion about this car on this forum I think?) - didn't Lancia actually make one or two examples of the 037 with 4wd as a precursor to the Delta Integrale Rally cars - ie. the Delta 4wd underpinnings but with existing 037 bodies on?

Either way, at least we have options now!

Sorry for the nerd interlude.

Did somebody say "nerd interlude?!"

You bet there is a 4WD Lancia 037:

037-4wdh-1.jpg

And in period, too:

34ot53c.jpg

The above was part of a plan by Ing. Sergio Limone (the project manager for the 037) and Giuseppe Volta, who finished the red car. It was created to take part in the 1984 European Autocross Championship, since that series allowed 2WD cars the option to run with 4WD. The project was realized with Fiat 131 Abarth-derived components alongside custom parts, but as the Delta S4 was due to arrive, Fiat pulled the plug on it. According to Ing. Limone, "[t]he solution was very simple..." and not a lot of relocation of existing components had to be done to make a 4WD 037 possible.

This was interesting, as the Lancia 037 was understood to have a short life as a factory-run car solely due to its rear-wheel drive; even from the outset, it was admitted that the car would have a front-line career of 1 or 2 years. The Audi Quattro's 1981 debut even had Renault contemplating a 4WD version of their 5 at the time!

Source is p.142 of the Lancia 037 book published by Veloce and written by Peter Collins.

... It might be cool to finish up a re-release 037 in the Volta colours - I considered doing that with my Wheelie Rally and putting it on a GF-01, but instead went for a WR-02 and another custom scheme. That might have been where that discussion came up...

Awesome nerd facts!

Have been studying it and I think this may be my 2018 project. The stripes look paintable but I will need to get some custom decals made.

Sign me up for some of those custom decals, perhaps ;)

I forget which company made alternative 1:10 decal sets for the 037; one of them was of Rohrl's Wurth car which appeared in the local German rallies he took part in during the 1983 season. I would love to replicate that car...

Just when I thought I was number one Lancia 037 fanboy!!

I'm in good company.

Now show of hands who has owned a Lancia Montecarlo or Lancia Scorpion.

Oh that's right, just me!!!! :D

Ha, I remember the Montecarlo - I never owned one, but certainly wanted to for a while when I was young!

Just had a quick noodle on the online classifieds, and it seems anything that is still running is going for around £20,000 these days!!!

Oh, and there is even a Belgian kit to turn into an 037 replica! - another 1:1 scale anyone?!

YES

In any case, it has to look better than this MR2-based 037 pastiche:

cuffxv2wh1nvvhbdgjah.jpg

... and yet I kind of like it?

At the moment, I am looking at alternative liveries. One of the easiest ones I can think of is the Esso Lancia 037:

big-wall-12.jpg

There is a company that sells decals for the Esso-sponsored Lancia Delta S4, and it looks like many of the sponsors on those were on the 037. It would then just be a matter of acquiring those decals, some black paint, and a can of gold.

It would have been fun to be able to do up a Totip, HF Grifone, or Würth car, but the Esso car looks much simpler, and from what I can tell does not require custom decals. And I hear njmlondon will already be working on the red 4WD car ;)

That being said, plenty of model kits are available of different 037s; a scanner and some resizing, and you could probably have a good custom set of decals from the kit-supplied ones.

And so long as our cars do not end up like this one at the 1984 San Remo Rally:

At least I think the snowplow bumper will return for the re-re-release...

I have to believe you are correct, given the gap between the bottom of the shell and the bumper...

... but I was too distracted by seeing a new Lancia again

It somehow looks more purposeful this way, if it is indeed true that it sits higher. I will find out once the pre-order ships.

To my delight, Great Hobbies will stock it, so I cancelled my Tower Hobbies pre-order. In the meantime, I will be reading my book on the 037 and counting down the days...

Edit: Consulting images again, I think the TA-03RS version was at the same height, but enough people set theirs lower when they were built. The room under the wheel arches looks about the same, though this image and the subject's angle make the space under the car more pronounced.

And here is the chassis:

rcm_180113_19.jpg

The bumper sure looks different!

LANCIA 037 NERD ALARM!!!!

Check out this week’s Grand Tour on Amazon... 037 vs Audi Quattro!

Loads of amazing classic footage and Walter Rohrl interviews.

Awesome.

Going to have to get this now but it is going to have to be RWD.

While that bumper will no doubt make the shell last longer in use, I suspect that most people will leave it off as they did with the Lowrider Pumpkin.

As for the shell clearance, I wonder if one could do the same as my mate and I did to our M-03 Suzuki Swifts, fitting longer shock ends to raise the suspension a bit, and dropping the shell down by a hole or two, thus keeping the correct gap between wheel and wheel arch, but reducing the amount of chassis sticking out below the body shell, and raising the ground clearance for better rally capabilities?

I was actually kind of fond of the longer bumper ;)

vynzgi.jpg

But then, I tended to crash! And driving a car with smaller wheels might make me less prone to taking risks... In any case, this new bumper looks a bit less ungainly than the original re-release's.

February 20th is marked in my calendar!

This is the lancia 037 tamiya need to re-re! The original orv chassisB), I always thought it looked a bit odd (in a good way) but soooooo cool even the real thing should look like that!

I am interested to see how you will approach this - are you thinking M-chassis-based, some sort of modified FF-chassis, or a standard/modified touring car chassis without the front gearbox, or none of the above? While I will enjoy the four-wheel-drive chassis (at least for a little while), I do agree that this 037 would be quite attractive with a rear-wheel-drive chassis like the original.

Top tip! I think I could try it on my build.

I still think a jacked-up 037 would make an attractive rally raid or Baja contender, in the same vein as this Oldsmobile:

Fantastic episode, best of season so far!

Now we know why 037 didn't win the series, what the support & eng crew got up up to (salting, tyre changes, cardboard hahaha).

The replicas never look right!  I want a panel-perfect one like the Bell STR Stratos.

Yes, a good Monte will fetch money.  My friend's '77 Scorpion sold for 25k USD a few years ago.  TBH...I wouldn't want to sell it if I were him... it was so perfect.

I sold mine for about triple what I paid for it... but I improved the car quite a bit.  When I bought it it wasn't running, brakes were seized, and a few other issues.  When sold; it had a 2.0L block, non-floating front calipers, 1982 grille, quad-headlamps, double-bubble top, MonteHospital DCNF aircleaner box, etc.

Still I couldn't stomach paying upwards of 3k USD for replica european bumpers (a large portion of this cost was shipping to the US).

I'm just amazed any made it across the Atlantic without rusting to pieces first... ;o)

Gorgeous looking rally car.

If it comes with the 2 helmet guys, I am sold.

Take my money Tamiya 😄

Thought how the 53143 TA-02 Rally skid guard bumber set would look on the Lancia!?🤔

Seems to be perfect when thinking about it.

I thought the same thing...
