Kyosho Ultima Rebuild

Recommended Posts

I recently got a great deal on a used Kyosho Ultima Pro XL buggy, and wanted to post my progress here. I'm undecided on the final look, but at the least it needs a rebuild. From the auction photos it looked in good shape, and upon receiving it, I was mostly right. However, The rear right turnbuckle has some weird ball ends, and it's missing the front right turnbuckle. The previous owner used wood screws to replace some that were missing, and there were a couple small pieces that were gone as well. Here were the photos that I took when I got it.

Came with a neat modified motor from Team SLC

After cleaning, the chassis plate and towers, etc. came out nice

More to come soon.

Looks to be missing a few bits, (rear shock?) ,  it not too bad.

What's the plans after the rebuild? shelfer, runner, brushless and lipo. 🤔

The rear shock is there, I left it out of the picture by accident! My bad. Otherwise not too rough, no.

I'm thinking a runner with the mod motor and maybe lipo :). Not sure on body and tires yet though.

It's been a while since I've been able to work on this, but had some time yesterday to clean and rebuild most of the rear end. Kyosho wasn't super helpful in their manual when they said the ball diff came assembled from the factory - I had to kind of guess when I took it apart. Everything on the inside looked great and the tranny runs smooth now.

I tried to lightly polish/remove grime from the aluminum and SS parts, and some turned out better than others. I'll just be using this as a runner though, so I'm not too worried.

Had some more time today to work on the car. Put in a Trinity P2K with a HW1060, and a Futaba BB standard servo, and am thinking a small 3s LiPo would fit well.

Some of the screws and linkages aren't as consistent as I would like, but I'm okay with it for now.

Rebuilt the shocks and attached the servo to the steering.

Overall it looks pretty good so far! Going to adjust the turnbuckles to make sure everything is straight and true, but I'm much closer to the finish now.

Wow, I can't believe it's been over two years since I got that far on the car. I've since moved, and this has been sitting in a box for what seems like forever. I recently dusted this off to finish it up.

I ordered front and rear Schumacher pin tires, a new dedicated ESC and Syncro 2.4ghz radio, new o-rings, rear turnbuckles, rod ends, e-clips, and a servo (whew!). I also just ordered a factory finished Outrage body in yellow from here in the states. I didn't want to wait on the dedicated Pro XL body from Canada.

The shocks mysteriously siezed up, and it turns out the pistons somehow had swollen. I'll be replacing those with whatever I can find in my spares boxes. Since the car has been sitting forever, I'm going to do another rebuild to dust everything off and install the new parts.

I rebuilt most of the rear transmission. I initially thought the ball diff was too tight, but it turns out that it was fine and just needed to be adjusted. I tried to polish a few pieces, but it didn't come out to be very consistent. Oh well :).

I've been steadily rebuilding this for the past few weeks. The rear transmission is almost finished, and the front is nearly done as well.

Everything attached:

The shock pistons had either swollen or were messed up another way, so I rebuilt them today. I put in new pistons, and used a drill and some sandpaper to get a sliding fit in the cylinders.

All rebuilt:

They're smooth now, but too stiff. I'll have to drill out the piston holes larger I think.

And a teaser of what the body will look like on the car:

Lessons learned:

1) Drilling out shock pistons is the worst

2) Soldering takes a close second place

3) Zip ties are amazing
