So I've built my recently acquired DT-03T Aqroshot and during the build instead of the standard kit plastic drive shafts and cups I fitted metal cups and dog bones. As I was fitting them it occurred to me that other cars I have with dog bones - Boomerang and Twin Detonator - have O-rings in the drive cups (at least at the gearbox end).

I didn't have any spare O-rings to hand so I assembled without and ordered some to put in.

Then I had a look at a manual for a DT02 (can't remember which model) which had the metal cups and dog bones in the kit, and that didn't show any O-rings.

There is quite a bit of movement in the drive shafts as they stand, without O-rings.

Should I put some O-rings in the cups?
What have others done that have fitted the dog bones?

I faced a similar dilemma when building mine. I looked at the Desert Gator manual, which uses the same metal components and shows no O-rings in the cups, but like you I was concerned about the looseness of the dogbones. In the end I put a single soft red O-ring in each of the gearbox drive cups, which seems to work well, allowing some play, but not an excessive amount.

Interesting. Not seen those before.

Do they just sit in the drive cups in the same way as o-rings?

Yes - I discovered them as a set came with the Egress I built - they are softer than an o-ring of course so will compress better, however if you need them to be thinner you can just slice them in half. - I took some out recently when cleaning or something - and other than being no longer white they where pretty much still the same - ie had not been crushed and therefore ineffective. Before finding that you could buy them on there own I tried to use some bits of cut to shape blue packing foam in another model but these remained compressed permanently after a while.

I too hate the slope in the drive shafts / dog bones as I'm sure it increases the rate of wear, I try and use as little grease on exposed parts as possible as it attracts girt and dust too much.

hmm looking at the Egress Manual - they only supply them for the front - and they are not in the 2011 manual for the Avante at all - I've yet to build my Avante to see if the Kit I have is any different to the Online Manual I have found.

I think I got my last lot from modellbau-seidel which isn't much help.

Wheelspin list them but no stock. Fusion also list - not sure whether they have stock.

I can't find any of those for sale anywhere other than Tamico.

I think I'll just go with an o-rings or 2 for now.

Thanks. Those ones I can get.

You can get an assortment of 'O' rings from places like Maplins or ebay - they come in a plastic box with compartments for the different sizes and are quite cheap - useful to have around for various things.

I should try urethane.  I didn't like how hard O-rings sat in Bigwig.

So I cut a spring from a rollerball pen and put it in Bigwig drive cups.  I have no idea how long they will last, but for now, they seem to do the trick.
