I had never heard of ESC until I started restoring my vintage models. I had to replace 2 MSC's back when I was a lad because they had burnt out and was considering putting a new ESC into my Hotshot for running purposes. I will most likely running a Kyosho 18 x 2 turn 540 motor which I have had for quite some time. Can anyone explain what all this reverse and forward gear options are, what motors I should be using and if the ESC can be fitted on a budget of less than £50 ? Thanks

Hi mate. Don't know too much, but i'll try and help. Unlike a msc, some esc only go forward. Instead of reverse, you get a sort of brake. I always use forward and reverse ones, as i find them better for general use. Usually the more you spend on a esc, the lower turn motor it will accept without causing damage. You should be able to find on under £50 that can be used with your motor. Check out some r/c shops websites, and they will usually tell you the lowest turn motor each esc can handle. My local shop is modelsport, and there site is quite good for info purposes. I paid about £30 for one of my esc (forward/reverse), and run a similar motor to yours with it.[;)]

An ESC allows much finer control than an MSC and will also give longer run times. Unlike the MSC which works off resistance to alter the speed so draws a constant current, the ESC varies this. £50 will get you a pretty good ESC with quite a low motor limit. The best for that sort of money IMO is the LRP AI for £45 although is quite big and not waterproof. The other I would consider is the M Troniks RV-15 at £43 which is smaller and waterproof although not as powerful.

Thanks Guys, the information was most useful. I will have a look at the ones mentioned. Although not restoring this part to original, I would prefer to keep my cars as runners and not shelf queens.

Will probably go for the mtronik 4 RV15 as it is waterproof. Do you know whether this comes with all the connections. i.e. will it have a tamiya connector and does it have an on/off switch to replace the BEC circuitry or does it not need an on off switch?

The RV-15 comes with a tamiya battery connector and tamiya style bullets for the motor so the battery and motor will plug straight in. There is no on off switch although you are supposed to unplug the car when not running anyway so it's no big loss. If you want a switch though then you should be able to add one fairly easily.
