Evening all,

I would like to buy a buggy for my son as an introduction to RC.  Don’t want to spend a great deal as it’s likely to get a bit beat up to start, but definitely want Tamiya as it links nicely to my childhood.

Let me know if you have anything that may suit.  Don’t mind a bit of a project

The go-to buggy for first timers is the Mad Bull.  There're plenty of build threads here that you should mine for good ideas and the few, simple mods.  The most important would likely be the: heat shrink tube on the steering arm mod.  Uber simple and keeps the arm from popping out/binding up on you.

Wr-02  It wheelies. and handles better than the lunchbox.

My boys are 4and 6. They have a lunchbox and a mad bull.

The mad bull gets boring, it never falls over, doesn't wheelie. but it is tough.

Some of the fun for the kids is running to tip it back on its wheels.

But then, there is the Konghead 6x6.

You need more children I think, then more kits.

I would cast a vote for the Mad Bull. For taking on hills, dirt mounds, uneven terrain etc it is a winner. Jumping ditto. For racing on the road by your house and your lawn, the Mad Bull and likeminded wheelie racers are more fun. So really it is based on use scenario.

For the Mad Bull the steering mods with heat shrink tube is great, second is oil filled shocks. I just bought cheap alu shocks from China on Ebay that had the right length and have not regretted that decision. They were dirt cheap and did the trick.

For the Lunch Box there are more simple mods that are recommended along the way. Best are the 3rd/5th (based on naming; same mod) shock mod, then a slight shortening of front shocks preferably by switching to oil filled shocks. Again China. Also a controller with dual rate steering so you can compensate for the uneven lengths of the steering arms. That is way easier then centering the servo but a matter of taste I guess.

Have fun buying and playing and merry Christmas

Thanks everyone for your comments - I have seen the madnull a lot recently and must admit hadn't considered it before.

I had a pumpkin  25 years ago so am aware of how they run.

Ideally I think first off I just want a basher that I'm not to concerned if it gets damaged and can then fix easily.

Has anyone got anything for sale that fits that bill?  The fighter RX lower down this forum would have been ideal, for example.

I have a couple of buggies that might be of interest... And a lunchbox and some TL-01 projects... Also 27 Mhz Radio gear and batteries and chargers that can be included too!

Another +1 for MadBull. My 9yr old daughter and 4 yr old son love it. Tough as nails, cheap to repair, runs well on pretty much any terrain thanks to the big tyres and it's got a hard body which will take a fair amount of road rash.
