Any guess on re-re 2019?

This is a god point to raise as most here at TC fit into that category.... along with the middle aged men with wives that don't understand anything that happens inside your garage category.

I know it's been said before but you almost have to forget your own western mentality when thinking about this subject and start dreaming Land of the Rising Sun !  I just think that the Japanese and Asian market is still the primary target for Tamiya.  In particular all of the fun wheelie and now comical releases are really to pander to the Japanese market as example.  Surely the re-re product line is also influenced mostly by what will be popular at home and then gives some consideration to the world market.

Fire Dragon for instance is massively popular in Japan so it was always going to get a run.  Based on this I'm calling Super Sabre in 2019.....:D

Spot on. Tamiya cares nothing for anyone outside the domestic market. Tamiya will cater to the Japanese sensibility. That being said, I expect to see an Avante 2001 as the next re re. The body released a few years ago was the test. Egress, Avante, and Avante BS have all now had a few runs. Tamiya also loves to part bin special kits. They have just about everything ready to roll for the Avante 2001. This is not the kit I want. All this leads me to ask for a 959/Celica GrB like I do every year. I will be disappointed again this year, and I won't buy the Avante 2001.^_^

@thiebault quote"In particular all of the fun wheelie and now comical releases are really to pander to the Japanese market as example. "

What you call pandering I am envious of watching all the fun races on youtube they have in Japan with all the different Tamiya cars including the comical series.  I race occasionally and get bore with copy the latest guys set up sheet with the latest factory wonder car.  They seem to have more fun over there.  Could also just be because I don't understand a word of it watching on youtube but either way it's good business sense for them.

You seem to misconstrue my use of the word pander. I happen to be one of the biggest proponents of the Wheelie and Comical vehicles. My point is that Tamiya cater only to the Japanese market. ;)

No I got it, just a function of lost context in the old interwebz.  I wish I could be pandered too so much as the Japanese when it comes to Tamiya for sure!

In conclusion, a re-release model must be historically significant, marketable to nostalgia junkies and robust enough as to not create Tamiya more problems than they already have :]

Yes, I'm with you on this. But in absence of all but the most basic historical sales figures for all the Tamiya kits - do we actually know which kit is historically significant and marketeable? Or is our personal western world point of view getting in the way?

I, for one, certainly have no idea what kits were really significant in terms of sales. I'm making this up as I go along, based on my own singular preferences, which probably don't count all that much in the big picture...

I believe that certain re-released models were neither marketeable or significant, and still, they were re-released.

Take the ORVs for example - historically significant yes, but trouble-free? No more than King Cab, probably less.

The SRBs on the other hand would probably be the most historically significant Tamiya kits ever, but in terms of sales, I'd say they're not. And they do come with their own set of problems, which is ok, because they target a market that will forgive their inherent drawbacks - but wouldn't that hold true for the King Cab as well?

And what about middle-of-the road kits like FAV? (If that is what it really is, which I don't know for sure). Not very significant, not a strong seller, buy re-re'd nevertheless. Yeah, maybe they have the scale-builder military model thing going for them, but doesn't that still not explain Wild One?

Or Sand Rover and Holiday Buggy - what's their story? Re-re'd on a modern chassis, taking away the nostalgia angle almost completely. Yes, they're cheap, so is that the only reasons why they were re-released?

I understand your point, I just think it isn't the only one that can be made.

Top Force is a very late First 100 kit, in my opinion, it doesn't appeal to the "early" fans at all, only to those that want the entire lineup complete, or the "later" fans. Does that make it less historically significant? I don't know off the top of my head how Top Force compared to Vanquish pricewise, but in any case, it wasn't a cheap kit, was it?

I do agree that most of the high profile kits have been done already. I just don't think it will stop there. I do have trouble imagining a Bear Hawk re-release, due to all the factors you mentioned, but on the other hand, it seems to me, that didn't keep Tamiya from re-releasing a few other equally less significant kits.

At the very least I believe that what is true for Fox is true for Falcon. The significance and marketability of those is at the very least roughly equal.

So again, I do not disagree with your point of view, I'm just arriving at a slightly different conclusion: As long as there are kits to be re-re'd, be re-re'd they will. Some might be less promising, yes, and Tamiya knows their parameters for re-re decisions better than any of us, but I think there's way too much of a unpredictable, wildly variying, nostalgic, obsessive human element involved on the buyer's side for them to not try to sell any and all of these kits as re-res.

Amen, brother.

Sure enough, I'll be the first one refreshing this thread during 2019.

Let's hope we get lucky!

How'd you feel about a black special 2001? They literally have all the parts! Just rere the body again, put it on an Egress chassis minus the front shock tower, bam done .I'd buy it! The Avante series are fun builds. They could even switch it up, include the original ball ends!

I vote for King Cab rere with new Super Astute transmission. This keeps the originals original and allows us to run them.

After consulting my magic 8-ball, reading my tea leaves and doing a tarot spread, plus secret insider information (completely non-existent) I have divined the next re-release will be the B2B Racing Sidecar (with Black Special and comical versions to follow).

Based on this, 2019 will be a major re-re year. Statistically, we’ll see around 5 re-releases and another 5-6 “classic” themed kits.  Following established practice and moving along the 1976-2018 Tamiya timeline, this will include Falcon, either Sonic Fighter or Striker, one of the Avante family cars, possibly Top Force Evolution and a reappearance by one of the Dragon cars or maybe Dyna Storm.

But first up will be a new truck re-release or two, most likely one of them ORV based, either long overdue Mud Blaster or one of the advanced ORV designs, while the other is going to be either a “lower” 3-Speed or King Cab/Monster Racer. This is also the year where the impossible is actually statistically likely to happen, and that means Wild Willy or 959/Celica. Yes. Certainly. (Statistically certainly, so not exactly real world certainly, but stilll...) Last but not least, a Ford Escort Rally car, probably on a late-model platform. And of course, one oddity like a… um… no, hang on, oddity, that would be Comical Grasshopper, and that already DID happen in 2018.

See? Infallible. It’s coming. In fact, it’s already begun.

Expect the big stuff to happen in February, July and toward the end of the year.

Statistically.

Barely four weeks into 2019, I have to say that while I got every single specific model wrong, so far my nonspecific predictions are holding up 100%.

Comical Grasshopper, Comical Hornet, Red Lunchbox, Mountain Rider re-re-re, HKS Skyline.

Scratch oddity, passenger car re-re on a modern chassis, two vintage themed releases, and then wait for February.

Because statistically, claiming to have made accurate predictions for the entire year on day 26 will inevitably get you proven wrong.

If Tamiya now have ties with Ford again... I'll sit patiently waiting for my Mk1 or Mk2 Escort.

the exact numbers of re-re models sold will only be known by tamiya. what sells like hotcakes in one market may not be so for another.

the japanese have an interesting fascination for cutesy, cartoony items. they also enjoy things that aren't seen in the rest of the world.

take tokyo disneyland for example. hordes of japanese will go, all dressed up to the nines in disney apparel and paraphernalia. and they do this multiple times a year.

you don't see that anywhere else in the world.

given the likely demand in the domestic market for manga related items like the fire dragon, there should be a similar release down the road--either the thunder dragon(more likely) or the fire dragon again
