I’m a newbie to rc builds and have just completed my first build - the lunchbox. When the car is moving forwards and I pull back on the stick to go in reverse the engine stops rather than going straight into reverse, is this correct? To go in reverse I have to pull back on the stick a second time? In other cheap rc cars I’ve used going form forward to backwards on the stick is instant when you pull up or down  rather than what I’m currently getting with my lunchbox. Hope I’ve explained that ok, as I’m not sure if I’ve done something wrong in the set up. I’m using a Carson reflex stick pro 3 transmitter. Thanks

Have you thought of reading the instructions for the Electronic Speed Control (ESC)?

Sounds like it is set to Brake and Reverse. Quite normal these days. In days past, racing ESC’s only used to have a Brake and no reverse. And ESC’s with reverse didn’t normally have a Brake. But many have both abilities these days.

It's normal, it's the brake. The first time you move the trigger it brakes. You have to go back to neutral and then hit reverse again to start going backwards. It's much better when you get used to it IMO. I only like to have pure forward/reverse for rock crawlers and stuff like that now.

Ok thanks, I will give it a proper trial as is and see how I get on with having the brake and reverse function set. I’ve read the esc instructions but being new to this I’m kinda confused as to how to switch the set up anyway. It’s a TBLE 02 s, and I’m using a brushed motor. I’m not sure if i should change the high point set up or the reverse set up or both if I want to just have pure forwards and reverse set up? I suppose having it set up as is will be better otherwise going from full throttle forwards to full throttle reverse could strip the gears!  Proper newbie! Lol

I discover today that the wires to motor have to be a particular way round as in reverse it puts much less power out. As I had wires wrong way round the truck was ok in forward and manic in reverse....switched wires and flipped servo reverse switch and more go in forward and less manic in reverse.

IF I had used the silvercan then I may have got this right, BUT I put in Sports Tuned to both in the build and they have a red and a black.

Then it should be Yellow to Red and Blue to Black. Is that how you have it?

about a 20-25% difference I reckon.

Maybe I should read the instructions for the ESC in case there are other points I am missing. I just hooked it up and away I went....lol slightly slower than i should have it turns out..

What radio do you have? There should be a switch or a setting to flip the controls for forward and reverse so that forward is the faster speed.

Still got the original MSC in my '89 Pumpkin and slamming it straight into reverse for almost 30 years hasn't done it any harm. Never get bored of stunts and spins. :D

I don’t think this will help  if the motor is wired backwards. Reversing the channel won’t fix this. Won’t it just make it go forwards when you select Brake.

The motor shouldn't be wired backwards if Baddon has Yellow to Red and Blue to Black. Please correct me if I am wrong, I am still learning as well, but of the 3 Sport Tuned motors I have, this is the correct wiring. If the motor is wired correctly, why is there more power to Reverse? I think we should ask which ESC Baddon is running at this point.

It was only slower till I changed the wires to correct way. So it' all sorted. Has been since before I posted my point -was if  I got it wrong so may others and I posted to help others get to solving it faster than I did.  3 batteries in.

I can’t seem to work out how to change the esc to just go from forwards straight into reverse anyway. I’ve read the info but looks like I can only turn reverse off or turn it on?

I was wondering this earlier as I was testing the CW-01 motor/gearbox. I was a little concerned as when I first turned it on the forward/reverse was switched and I thought I'd installed something incorrectly but a button on the receiver simply switched it to the right commands. I assume there isn't actually a reverse function in the gears/motor and it runs just as well in either direction?

It's not a gearbox as such, there are no switchable gears in it, forward or backward, just some constantly-meshed cogs to drop motor speed down to something that usefully moves the truck.  It doesn't care what direction it drives in either way, it just does what the motor asks it to do.  And the same applies to the motor too, it'll run the same in each direction quite happily.

Any restrictions in reverse speed, or the need to select reverse twice before it reacts, are down to the ESC.  Depending on what model ESC it is, you may be able to tweak some of these default settings.  And depending on what radio gear you're using, you might be able to adjust things there too.

I much prefer driving my 27MHz MSC-equipped Pumpkin to my 2.4GHz ESC-equipped Lunchbox or Unimog CW-01's.
