Hi as a new member I am after a bit of advice, I bought my 8yr son a racing fighter for Xmas, I thought it would be to quick for him to handle so left completely standard, after only 2 runs he has totally mastered it and I am looking for the best upgrade options to get some more speed. I don’t want to spend a fortune as he may lose interest although I hoping not as I can relive some youth with this hobby.

Thanks wolfdogstinkus

1. Am I still ok with Nimh with this or do I need LiPo also will the Tamiya speed controller be ok with this

2. Cool should I have 17t or 19t

3. Bearings not done yet, should have done during build with hindsight but so they make that much difference also where can I get for only £6

1. The brushless combo is a motor and speed control which replaces the Tamiya unit.     Saw your reply.

2. Start with the smaller 17T,

3. Rc bearings, on ebay, they do kits specific to the car usually around the £6 mark

Keep asking, my knowledge will run out in a minute. lol

Most budget brushless combos are sensorless, seem to prefer LiPo, and can cog badly on NiMH.

If you want to use the stock speed controller and just get a sensored brushless motor to work with it, you can do this too. The stock TBLE-02 ESC can handle down to 10.5t in brushless mode, but may need a cooling fan when running at the limit. 13.5t works excellently while leaving some headroom to avoid overheating. The stock ESC works fine on NiMH or LiPo, but needs a LiPo alarm.

I ran a 4300kv system in a DT02 which is similar, that was crazy fast, but also lots of fun. 2s lipo or Ni-mh 7.2v = lots of fun and wheelies.

Some will say that's un-controllable, too much power, I just say, don't squeeze the trigger as much, but when you do, it's hilarious.

Cogging is a roughness during acceleration. Not certain of the full reason behind it, but as I understand it the motor tries to draw more power than the battery can provide.

Cool thanks guys, never thought at 8 and his first ever rc he would even be able to handle in stock form but he just wants it to go faster!!! I need to get me one now, I’m looking at a second hand Schumacher, hope it’s fasrer than his!!

Any recommendations for the 13.5t brushless motor

Trackstar and Speed Passion motors are decent value and quality. You can of course pay far more for ultimate race performance, or less for Chinese tat, but I wouldn't.

I have both Speed Passion and Trackstar motors and rate both of them. I would buy the cheaper of the 2 as i can't really say i notice a difference with the TBLE-02S.

Speed Passion ESC are better than trackstar though, just much easier to setup and use, but you aren't asking about ESC.

Honestly imo I would probably get a sport tuned motor for it 1st, much faster and only cost about 20$usd and you don’t need to change anything else. Adding the bearings will also be a big help too

If you want to stick to brushed and NiMh - In my Lunchbox, I've had some good service from an HPI firebolt motor - cheap, fast and I've not managed to kill it yet... I paired it up with a hobbywing 1060 brushed esc (I haven't done this myself, but) Later if you want to go a little faster, just add another cell to your battery and run an 8.4V NiMh both motor and esc are rated to handle it!
