Hi all, Tamiya lover for many years and getting back into Re-release buggys.

Quick background - an uncle was an RC nut in the 80’s and had/still has somewhere, his original Boomerang, Falcon and Supershot and it was the Supershot that had a special place in my heart so I’ve just purchased a brand new Super Hotshot Re-release.

To avoid waffling any further, I’m looking at this brushless combo below in conjunction with a 4000mah 2S LiPo. I’ve also got an original Tamiya 15T steel pinion on order.

Appreciate if anyone here can give some insight into whether this is a good initial setup for a nice, fast but reliable Supershot Re-re and if not, what would be a recommended sensors setup with a similar budget.

Thanks for reading.

I just built a re re super hotshot and the kit comes with two pinions in the kit one 13 and one 15 so you get it to pick from anyway ..

I have that 13.5T motor in my Boomerang with a 17T pinion and it runs great. Thats on NiMH and with the standard TBLE-02S ESC so if anything it will run better with that Trackstar ESC. You'll probably find it disappointing on the 15T pinion as the motor has a lot more torque than the old brushed motors so can handle higher gearing. Its still has the acceleration on the 17T pinion too.

I also have 2 of those ESC in my racing buggies running 17.5T blinky and they have done a season so far with no problems. They can be a pain to setup though, you have to calibrate them to the radio gear. Once setup they are fine.

I have also run that exact combo in a TT02B on lipo and with some boost and turbo it was mental fast and good fun. One thing though, on NiMH it was disappointing as the battery just couldn't deliver the current. Make sure the lipo you get has a decent discharge rate (C rate on the battery) as if it can't provide the power it won't be fast. Look for 50C or higher, higher the better.

Consider adding the program card as it allows you to change the ESC settings which can make a massive difference.

I don't know, I've been told the gearboxes are pretty bulletproof but haven't abused one for long enough. I don't think you will find the 13.5T too slow, especially with the programmable ESC. That ESC is rated to 10.5T so you are pushing the limits of that too.  In saying that the ESC specs suggest it should be fine for lower turn motors but they are out of spec for it.

Lower turn motors don't mean much faster as you have to change gearing, so if you gear 13.5T and 10.5T correctly then there probably won't be a massive difference anyway
