My question is, is the Honda city turbo model any good ?

Is it just for Tarmac or can it go off road?

If brushless does it flip easy ?or hard to handle ?

Is it good for jumps or is clearance too low?

Thanks

1. It looks cool but from what I have read the shell is a poor fit on the chassis and needs extra trimming so as not to bind the steering.

2. The chassis features a sealed gearbox and thus can go off-road. The tires don't have an aggressive tread though and ground clearance is low so you won't get far.

3. It is based on a wheelie chassis with a very short wheelbase and relatively high centre of gravity. Handling is not its forte.

4. Low ground clearance and not a great deal of suspension travel makes it a poor choice for jumping.

The shell does not need much trimming, so it is not a matter of extensive plastic surgery - just a millimetre of plastic shaved off the front of the front wheel arches.

While it is a well-received model, it does not sound like it is suited to your purposes; it is a poor jumper and might not be that much fun with a brushless motor, due to the limited gearing options. It is worth remembering that it is based on a chassis that originally had much bigger tires, so top-end speed is likely going to be underwhelming.

That being said, I did turn mine into a rally car:

In this guise, though, it is not going to beat a buggy off the tarmac. You are going to be better off with another model.

Putting it bluntly I hated mine, so I sold the body and wheels off & converted the chassis to run the shell & wheels off from a WW2. I really wanted to like this model, but kept finding issues not too (pretty much what TurnipJF has mentioned above + a couple more).

Having said that there is something about it that means I've just bought another one, partly as I feel I didn't give it enough of a chance 1st time round... I am already starting to regret that decision to a degree, but it does mean I don't feel too bad about ripping it to bits to try and turn it into something else!

Thanks guys

what I'm looking for is a realistic model capable of offroading like a rally car or truck

with higher clearance than a tt01

@Grastens I like that Quattro very good I must say

How about a TT-02 then, or a MF-01X? Both can be built with extra ground clearance for rally driving. Even the M-03 and M-05 can make reasonable rally cars with a bit of a suspension lift and some rally block tyres.

I would like to know more about your car, please.  Is there a build thread?

Is this it?

This is my main issue, all my local terrain is off road so most 1:10 rally style stuff just doesn’t work for me, so I just adapted....to a WT01 rally car lol!!

You get the idea, you’ll forego some proportionality but you still retain the rally car detail and character but with a massively useable chassis.

With regards to the Wheeler, its best feature is to paint it in full race liveries, member @IBIFTKH has an awesome fleet of them, here is mine...

I tried to rallyfy it, but unfortunately I just couldn’t get it to work.., :(

Depending on your terrain, there is also the XV-01 long damper version which would be a realistic one but Indon’t think it is off road enough, probably only gravel/dusty track.

It makes a fine little rally car, if you keep the speeds down, and don't expect miracles...

I wouldn't bother with brushless; it's fast enough to be hard to control with the Torque-Tuned it comes with.

I'm building a TT02 for rally with rally tires, though I started on it almost a year ago and have yet to finish the body. I'm going to open the wheel arches a bit more, and I have some thin rubber material that I plan to make into mud guards. I've got the suspension at its highest setting, 3racing oil shocks, FRP damper stays, Tamiya high speed gear kit, and a 3300kV brushless motor in it. My plan is to use it on light trails when finished. As you can see, ground clearance isn't much, but options for TT02 are definitely out there.

DF03RA- :)

TL01RA- :)

These two would be my suggestions.... That or the XV01 which I hear is pretty awesome (never owned one of these though).

Nifty little XV01 vid here, not huge ground clearance but its about as much as you can get while remaining scale, I like the XV01 mudguards that stop muck getting all over the chassis!

The XV is like a spiritual successor to the TA03F, always fancied an XV but sadly I wouldn’t have the terrain to use one really.

I have a brushless tt01 modded for rally cut chassis with brushless motor have bent a couple of alloy wheels with this set up but the problem is it get stuck on small bumps lol

the xv01 looks like a capable model also looks very scale I'll have a read up about theses anyone got a review on one?

This helped me to decide on an Xv-01, as yet unbuilt

That video Nitomor uploaded is fantastic.

It could almost feel the nose-heavy characteristic of XV-01; just like the real 1:1 thing.  That did it, I want one now.

It has a front mounted motor like the TA03F of old, which gave great handling and as you say, realism, I use my old TA03F for drifting around the kitchen!

There are three chassis variants of the XV01 from memory, I’d suggest you look into the long damper variant. There is a regular damper and even a truck version the name of which escapes me right now.

There’s a thread on another forum that lists a suggested hop-up route from standard xv -01 upwards.

Long dampers come after other hop  ups. From memory (correct me if I’m wrong), they offer no/little increased ride height but longer travel.

So you can start from long damper spec and add body, etc as it doesn’t come with everything or start with a car or truck kit and then add long dampers later.

If you are jumping a car, you want the chassis to be able to bottom out before the suspension runs out of travel, otherwise all landing forces are transmitted through the fully compressed shocks straight to the shock towers, potentially breaking them and possibly the shocks too. The long damper spec gives enough suspension travel for the chassis to bottom out safely, making this version of the chassis a truly jump-capable rally machine.

The basic chassis and drivetrain is common to all the variants, so you can swap between them by purchasing the requisite shocks, towers, etc. The Asterion would appear to be the cheapest route to XV-01 ownership at the moment, and you can always sell off the truck wheels, tyres and shell to help fund their rally equivalents.
