Yogi Bear's Miscellaneous Build Thread

Recommended Posts

So a New Year brings new changes. I haven't done as much RC building etc the last couple of years as I would have wanted (gee, that sounds almost like a confession!). This year I've managed to start off with a much more positive. As I have a number of projects, I thought it would be better to do one thread than to start lots of smaller threads that aren't updated regularly.

With that I will start off with my CC01 build. I bought this one just over a year ago second had. Both the body and the chassis had been cut up. But at least it worked (and I got it cheap).

So the before pics.

Initially I thought get some better looking rims.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-9.jpg

but eventually decided I wanted to replace the body with the original Metal Top version. However the tires are way too big.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-11.jpg

Wasn't too keen on that look, and bought these to see how they would fit. I didn't mind the look.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-16.jpg

So last week I finally got around to painting the body. I decided to try a coat of metallic silver as the undercoat, this would also double as the colour for the bumper trim.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-17.jpg

I also decided to plug the aerial hole in the top of the roof.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-20.jpg

Followed by a coat of matt black paint on the inside.

After letting it dry, I masked it up for the top colour, going for TS-15 Blue.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-23.jpg

Unfortunately I didn't rub it down too well and there was some minor bleed through.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-24.jpg

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-25.jpg

So, ask the top and correct the silver a little.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-26.jpg

Not perfect, but I am happy enough with it.

Nice project .

You can correct small paint bleed areas etc to sharpen them up by spraying the colour (silver or blue) into a small tub or old paint cap and use a thin brush to paint in the area to sharpen up where the two colours meet .

Clean up brush immediately after use ;)

cheers for the advice, I will end up having to do that for the tail lights, pics to follow!

very true and I am being picky, especially since it will be a runner and no doubt end up being and scratched and dirtied anyway.

agreed!

So onwards I go. I don't know if you can tell in the pic, but I then gave the body basically two coats of a clear gloss

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-29.jpg

I then masked up the black trim and hand brushed it on. Unfortunately I rushed this bit and got a lot of bleed, especially at the rear. I was able to remove a fair bit with a wet cotton tip, but the back tail lights where really bad. I'll be following Kev The Rev's advice to touch this up. Still I was happy overall with the final look of the lights.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-32.jpg

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-33.jpg

Next is a test fit, I've also since found the rims I want to put on this. The tires are slightly too big for my liking (98 mm diameter) and have since orders some 90 mm MST tires.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-34.jpg

My next step was to put the bits from the old body on. Unfortunately there is only part of the window set, but I would eventually like it clear anyway as I want a driver in there.

The white snorkel is a dodgy 3D print I did. I'll have to re-do it in black, plus is mirrored incorrectly for the side of the car I want to put it on. And I made one of the Qld style graphical number plates. The top luggage rack, I'll have to drill the mount holes and secure that properly.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-36.jpg

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-37.jpg

And lastly I made some small badge decals for the back, tonights job is to re-paint the lights.

Looking good :)

You can make your own clear windows from acrylic sheet . I made some for my Mitsubishi Pajero some years back and bonded then in with a hot-glue gun :-

cheers!

That Pajero restoration of yours looks good. Those earlier Pajero's are on my "would be nice to have' list.

I have some 0.35 mm polycarbonate or some 0.75 mm PETG so I thinking of using either of them for the windows. I was also thinking if I heat it slightly I should be able to get that slight curve in the front windscreen. I'll see how I go, that could be more trouble that its worth. I'll also cut out the existing sunroof and use that.

The last couple of days I've managed to cut some window panels in 0.35 mm polycarbonate. I also started work on a home made bullbar. I've machined the uprights from 6 mm thick aluminium and have test fitted it with a bracket made from bits of 3 mm foamcore. Once I work out where I want it to go I'll make a proper metal bracket and add a bash plate.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-41.jpg

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-39.jpg

I don't have the rear bumper panel either, so I'm having ago at making one.

Thanks, I must admit I am please with my progress so far. I am even more happy in that I've been about to do bits and pieces every other night.

Now this is a miscellaneous build thread and I have several other projects I am hoping to finally get finished.

So, while I painting the Pajero, I also got back to work on a Martini Renault Mk 22 restoration project.

I got this in pretty bad condition a couple of years ago.

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-2.jpg

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-3.jpg

The previous owner had also cut the battery tray from a Mauri Big Bear and mounted it to the middle of the chassis.

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-1.jpg

I stripped the body and gave it a dip in Dettol.

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-6.jpg

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-5.jpg

I also cut new front bumper part out of 3 mm High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) and used friction welding (some round HIPS in a dremel) to attached it.

Nice work on the Pajero, and an intriguing Renault project!

At first, I did not take the hand-lettered sponsors too seriously, until I realized that I probably would have been inspired to try the same thing... While the lettering itself does not add much to the model, it certainly adds to its story - to say nothing of the modified battery box, either.

Same here, I would have (and probably did) try similar things with I was a kid. At least the car was well used I guess and given the bends in the chassis had some good times with it!

Renault Mk 22 Update

So after some undercoats, sanding back and more coats, I finally was able to paint and clear coat. I settled on a silver undercoat.

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-13.jpg

Followed by 2 coats of TS-16 Yellow and two coats of a clear gloss.

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-14.jpg

My next step was to trace out the decals. I did the easiest ones first, machine cut in black vinyl. The Goodyear ones were a bit small and I'll need to tweak my cutter and have another go.

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-16.jpg

Followed by application

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-17.jpg

58014_Martini-Mk22-Renault-Car-2-18.jpg

The original chassis was a bit bent. I'll have a go at bringing this back to life, but I'm not stressed if I can't, as luckily I have a spare.

Pajero Update

New shoes arrived, these are MST crawler tires (medium grade) at 90 mm, so only 6 mm smaller than the previous ones, but it means I don't have to trim the wheel arches to get clearance. I prefer the look of the previous tire (pictured in the middle), but these will be better scale I think, and have a more scale tread pattern.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-43.jpg

I also had a go and making a dash. Ok, it looks like a mangled Ikea bookshelf, but its a work in progress and with a lot of filler and sanding I am sure it will get there :D

The plan is to scratch build the interior, so its going to be a positive learning experience.

yikes, this year has gone quickly.

Pajero Update

So I managed to do a few more upgrades including a 55T motor, new pinion, matching esc with a brake, bash plate and making a better mount for the bull bar. I also upgraded the hubs.

The bash plate is only 0.6 mm thick, so I'm tempted to redo in 2 mm al and counter sink the screws, so its all nice and flush.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-45.jpg

I made some cross bars for the bullbar, and a mounting bracket. It'll need a bit of reworking to securely mount the bull bar to the chassis.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-46.jpg

I also found some nuts that I'd forgotten I'd bought from Hobbyking. Made to look a little more scale.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-49.jpg

New hub and C carrier installed. I've since also bought some one piece cvs to put in

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-50.jpg

a better pic of the bash plate

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-51.jpg

I went walking with the fam and took the Pajero out for a test drive, photos courtesy of my daughter. It still has gearing problems, so that means I'll have to take apart the rear diff I think. One of the rear shock absorbers also all off, so I think its time to also upgrade that end a bit too.

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-52.jpg

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-53.jpg

There seemed to be a lot of caterpillars out today

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-54.jpg

58132_Mitsubishi_Pajero_-55.jpg

Managed to find Finn on sale, so he'll end up being the driver

Machine Parts Update

One of my projects is to machine my own rims. I finally got to try a second rim, and while a lot quicker, still took a few hours. But there is a lot I can do to bring the time down. Currently I have to machine down a lot of metal, so round bar stock in much closer to size will save a bit of time. I'm also in the process of upgrading my lathe to a quick change tool post. That may not save me huge amounts of time, but I think little things like that will add up. My parting off technique could also be a lot better and I wasted a lot of time there, but at least I didn't break anything this time :D

This is have the first bit of machining.

machined-parts-1.jpg

Second rim along side the first rim I made, I was changed it slightly just to see the effect. I won't do the holes until I've got a better setup for the rotary table.

Smachined-parts-2.jpg

machined-parts-3.jpg

I now have a 3 jaw chuck for the rotary table, just have to make a mounting plate and an alignment bar for the centre and it should be nice and accurate.

Scratch Build Delorean

So Firefoxussr emailed me not too long ago about an idea for a Delorean body from a paper craft model, but transferring it to plastic. I liked the idea but couldn't think if a suitable plastic I'd like to use. But it did occur to me that aluminium might work. Do the prints onto a clear vinyl, mount to the Al and cut out.

These are the clear prints.

Delorean-Scratch-Build-1.jpg

and the bonnet mounted to aluminium, a nice effect I think.

Delorean-Scratch-Build-2.jpg

So for the first test I tried the bonnet and one side guard

Delorean-Scratch-Build-3.jpg

Front section in Al and paper for comparison. Its a little rough, but I think it has potential.

Delorean-Scratch-Build-4.jpg

So I tried a rear panel and door, cut and bent by hand. There is definitely a bit of work to do, but I think as the Aluminium is only 0.6 mm thick, it can be made to work.

Delorean-Scratch-Build-7.jpg

Delorean-Scratch-Build-8.jpg

So for me that looked good enough to try a bit more. The next step is to select a chassis and scale the paper model to fit. I went with Firefoxussr's advice and got a M-06, found some Delorean chassis reference and scaled to fit. The short wheel base seems to fit the best with the least distortion. I'll trace and make some cross members (pink bars) to get the proper profile of the body and use that as a guide for bending the aluminium. If this works I might even try the technique on the Volvo build I have thats stalled a little.

Wow! I have always been wondering why no one ever produced a DMC polycarbonate body, but making it aluminum is very fitting!

The Ghostbusters sticker is actually the best bit on your Pajero, even beyond the rest. Also, shame on you crawler guys for making me want to get yet another car! :(

so lately I've been playing my new 3D printer, much more reliable than the last one!

 Misc 3D Bits,

Trying to make good use of the 3D print, so I started out by printing little extras for my Pajero, plus some Star Wars ships for my son. Some examples:

3D-Print-Test-Anycubic-i3-16.jpg

3D-Print-Test-Anycubic-i3-11.jpg

Monaro Build

I found a Holden Monaro 3D model on Thingiverse, so gave that ago. It took me a while to realise it hasn't been made properly. Its currently setup as a 2 door coupe, but the rear door pillar is too far back and the back of the roof isn't the right shape. So I am going to change it to match the 4 door version. I had issues printing the front windscreen, so that will have to be fixed at some point.

Monaro-Build-7.jpg

Monaro-Build-6.jpg

Monaro-Build-9.jpg

Ford Escort Mk 2 1600 Build

Also on thingiverse was a RS2000 Ford Escort. This was printed in 5 sections.

TA02-Ford-Escort-Mk-2-1600-2.jpg

I'm using acrylic cement to weld the plastics pieces together.  It makes for quite a strong join. I've got to remember to wear gloves though when handling it, its nasty stuff.

TA02-Ford-Escort-Mk-2-1600-1.jpg

Because it melts the plastic, I can lay in reinforcing strips, which where needed along the back joint as the printing warped a fair bit leaving a sizeable gap.

TA02-Ford-Escort-Mk-2-1600-4.jpg

TA02-Ford-Escort-Mk-2-1600-3.jpg

Followed by lots of filler!

TA02-Ford-Escort-Mk-2-1600-5.jpg

Its also a bit narrower than the first Ford Escort I was trying to copy, and I think this one is much more true to scale.

TA02-Ford-Escort-Mk-2-1600-6.jpg

A quick undercoat and test fit onto a chassis, but needs lots and lots of sanding. 3D printing is great, but you can see the print lines.

TA02-Ford-Escort-Mk-2-1600-8.jpg

TA02-Ford-Escort-Mk-2-1600-10.jpg

I'll build this based on this rally version,

TA02-Ford-Escort-Mk-2-1600-9.jpg

Land Freeder

For my birthday in May I got a Land Freeder, so I was determined to build this one and not just let it sit in the cupboard.

These are the hop-ups I bought for it, although I ended up not using the rims as it made the tires too wide for my liking. Plus I installed bearings throughout.

58579-Land-Freeder-2.jpg

I painted the bash plate

58579-Land-Freeder-3.jpg

The driver

58579-Land-Freeder-1.jpg

Nearly done, just need to sort out mounting the body (I'll use the magnets from the stealth kit I bought), finish off the body details and add electronics.

Preston, you're back! I have done a bit more, but I too have been slack posting pics :D I haven't done anymore on the Delorean or Holden yet though. Have redone the Ford Escort  and started on the interior, plus started another project (which I though would be simple) of putting a jeep rubicon body onto a CC01 chassis. Turns out there is a lot of cutting to do! I'll get some pics up soon.

Sounds good mate! I’m really intrigued with the Holden, the body shape looks great..a lot better than the 2D pics I generally look at on the internet...one advantage of looking at pics of a 3D print is that the lines highlight the shapes and even though it’s a 2D pic, it’s almost like looking at it in 3D as you can see where the lines go, if that makes sense....lol. Well...you know me...I’m a Holden nut!  The MK2 interior sounds great! What’s the inside width of the body? Maybe I can cast a copy of my dashboard for you if it will fit...lol.. if you want it that is...lol!
