Schumacher actic find

Recommended Posts

Need your help on this never seen one before I only messed about with Tamiya over the years ..

Right guy in work finds out I started building an few Rc cars again ,says his mate left him one as he raced and got a upgraded model so said he will never use it and been stuck in his atic for some time . Today brings it in and says here you go a chassie and a case with few brushed motors in it ..

Car has BELT drive the full length from front to rear cogs .. 4x4 , strange is the front wheels spin on the belt drive but when you stop pulling the belt they free spin .

Any way I want to see if I can get it to run ,but missing the drive cog from the motor so I need to find some thing that match up , it looks very find teeth on the main cog wheel ..

and missing the servo posts to fix the steering servo to the base ..if it does run and any good I may then start looking for a body shell and new tyres of some sort , as these are sponge type ( was told is was F1 type ) racer.... but think it may pull off a buggy with some spike tyres ..as said may not be worth doing or even so old hard to find parts .. I would like to know any thing about it model number etc ..... Will try and add a few pics ,but I think my up load is on the limit as says no ..lol..

Sounds like front end has a 1 way roller drive shafts or a one way unit fitted instead of a diff. If the spur gear teeth look very fine then they are probably 64dp gears. Photos would be extremely useful, I know that some people used to race buggies indoors with sponge tires, so sponge tires on their own may not necessarily indicate a road car. Does it look like a buggy with sponge tires, or a touring / F1 style car (I wonder about the F1 as it is 4wd). How much suspension travel is there, what sort of suspension is it (double wishbone ?). Are there universal joints at both ends of the drive shafts running to the axles ?

Is motor mid mounted (Between the axles) or does it hang out behind the rear axle?

Sounds like a Schumacher procat?

Without pictures , it's a bit difficult.

The procat has one way front driveshafts, under power it's 4wd, under braking, it just brakes the rear wheels so theres no understeer. The newer cats, K1 etc , have a FAB unit (Front Adjustable Brake) so you can adjust just how much braking power goes to the front.

You can download the procat manual from the Schumacher site, see if it is that model , and you'll get the part numbers you need if it is.

It might be a super rare PB ace, which also came with one way rollers, but the motor hung out the back on that one ala Optima.

Y'mean PB Mini Mustang :P (4WD 1/10 buggy)

PB Mustang is a 1/8 RWD rally car with a Ford Escort Mk1 body on a nitro chassis made by simplifying the PB Alpha suspension racecar.

sorry guys still trying to do pics ..

info is yes the belt runs down the centre over the top bar and under the whole sub floor .. motor mounts in front of the rear axel ..

Travel on shocks is a bit but when you extend them the drive shafts hit the lower arm so cant see it running that way . I did find a car that looked the same but with a shell that looks like a buggy wide at rear down to 2inch point ..

found this , not right but so close but run height is too tall ..

and the winner is .............................................

PROCAT ... after looking at the book and pics ,, yep can say its that model .. so I wanted to take apart to service , but the spec on that gear box OMG ... more belts inside ...but now shopping list will grow .. first

Need the steering servo saver and arm ..... have ordered a drive cog but the bolts to hold the motor on must be really short as the frame it bolts on is only 2 or 3mm thick ..

Spike tyres if it goes well  and a body of some sort .. but rust over the anti roll bars and shocks is poor ..

Belts are quiet , efficient and you have no torque reaction when using high power motors in a 4wd🖒😁

Schumacher sell bolts and bolt section packs, or if you can find the size, eBay!

It might be worth watching the old vid in this thread, I know it's a different Schumacher cat, but it's close enough.

well seems to be going backwards on this ....lol

well story time , the guy still thinks he seen a F1 shell on even after I shows him the pics of the procat .

Goes to last night gets car and pulls on the belt and sticks one of the rear wheels locked up ..?

Back up the story the guy does not drive so when he came into work he had the car on his push bike in the RAIN ... car was dirty and a bit damp ,, just put it down to atic , but now think the water has got in to the bushes or diff .. so will spry some sort of oil over thing for now till I get the chance to strip it ( don't want to ,but look like I have to ) so will keep you informed ..Thanks for the links have saved the body shell ann belt cover in my watch list also wheels .... Its the servo saver is a strange ,small and wit ha spring under it , I have plastic long ones so looking for something that will do the job ...

One less thing on my head , a little WD40 on the wheel hubs and it runs again .so waiting on parts to see it run ..

AAAHHHHHH .

waiting on parts ,,, nuts and bolts to hold motor in place as wel las the drive pinion ... well found a schmacher on line order and got it , rushed up actic to build as I truly want to see this run ,, dam splines are wrong very sharp and miss the drive wheel ..

checked drive cog and its I think 84 teeth , very fine ,, then ides strip the cog from my koysha mini , fits fine in the teeth  but out size is too small for it to make contact with the drive wheel when the motor is bolted in place  .. so on the hunt for a fine teeth cog .. or swap over the large wheel cog ..

also NOVAC ESC came with it , is there a set up to this , as it flashes with power has two turn screws on top with neutral and speed ..... getting a drag now ...

Just been reading the build manual .. saying that the drive cog is 95T - 48dp and the pinion is 22T - 48dp .... so checking the one I ordered ( never even notice ) but i got a 32dp ....so i just hope the 48dp is  correct now . another on its way

STILL going at it guys ,, strip down and good clean and got the correct pinion so ready to run , the motors I had with it have the quick pins connecting so will swap them out with bullet crimp type .. waiting on a esc to fit and try , but still taking pics >SO will defo put them up as I find a photo host site to do so ..

Question the car used to take TWO 6 cell batterys , are these still about or do I have to make some , just finding the 7.2 6cell standard ones a little long to sit across the car and when I do get a shell may push it out of shape ...or is there another battery you guys think will fit easy in the space , its has the two strap type clips on each side of the frame.

I know its hard to show you guys just yet , but its looking good so far ,, running and new wheels with spike tyres .. also a new re gen shell ... but been told the rear shock tower is from a XLS , so it wont let me fit the shell correctly .. so I am on the look out for a top beam bar what ever it is to buy to allow me to finish the car off ..

any joy on this part would be great help .. thanks

You'll find its 2 X 3 nicad/nimh cells, 3 each side, These are known as 'saddle' packs. Helped balance the weight and allow the belt to run up the centre.

You could make your own,

Buy some -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Voltz-2100mAh-7-2v-Saddle-Pack-with-Tamiya-Connector-radio-controlled-car/183065592778?epid=1304302639&hash=item2a9f8f43ca:g:NwwAAOSwnyVZ3nti

(have a look around locally, now you know what to look for)

Or, the route I'll be going down,is to look for a way to support lipo saddle packs, they are lighter and ALOT more powerful (but alot more dangerous! If you've not delt with lipo, do homework!)

5 x more powerful than the above -
