Long ago, the clerk in my local hobby shop always pronounced it as t-my-ya. 

That video clip was interesting. I didn't know they made Yamato again. As they say, Japanese are so obsessed with Zero and Yamato.

I always find it odd that when I do come across someone who knows what/who Tamiya is (which is rare) they inevitably pronounce it Ta-MY-ya here in the States. I use the correct pronunciation (I don't correct them for fear of being rude, but I don't back down on the correct pronunciation either) so the conversation goes on with both parties using different pronunciations. Like Grastens mentioned, it wasn't like the older folks weren't ever exposed to the right way of saying it. Before the internet age, those promo videos were everywhere in local hobby shops.

Based on my 4 years of learning Japanese at evening school, you stress all syllables equally and short most of the time, so it's "ta", "mi", "ya" (where "mi" is pronounced like the English pronoun "me").
