Hello all,

I ve been owning a TA02W Supra GT bodyshell since i was a kid and recently started rebuilding/repairing it for my 6yo son. I repaired some broken plastic parts to make it functional again but now i really want to make it as good as new and add some hop up parts. Ebay is my mate to this but i haven t been able to find a new bodyshell to paint it from scatch. The old one is kind of broken and to be honest i hadnt made such a good job when i first painted it. It s a pity because now i realize how beauty she was!!!

I will upload photos soon. Need all the help i can get for the bodyshell. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

Nice project - I have always wanted that Supra; it takes me back to the days of Gran Turismo:

Alas, I have also discovered that bodyshells are rare and/or expensive.

Looking forward to the photos!

It’s a cracking looking shell, I love Supras and this was the best of the bunch!

As i proceed more questions come up so....

  1. The motor seemed to be rotating faster to the one direction (the reverse) an much slower to the other (fw), so i had to reverse it. Is it normal or do i need to replace the motor? i use a standard speed control unit (not esc).
  2. Is there a chance i can remove the old paint and repaint it?

thank you in advance, more questions are to come....

Here is a photo of my baby. The body is in bad shape. I ve started cleaning and greasing it all over from start. New tires installed.

As it is fully running i m looking for some upgrades and of course a new bodyshell.

Hi,

you will find it near impossible to get a body now. I was looking for close to 2 years for one to pop up and when it did it cost me $250! Plus shipping.

Then the decals were the next impossible thing to find. But!

I worked with MCIRacing and helped to create an actuate set with my new body. https://mciracing.ca/products/castrol-toms-supra

the wheels should be ok to get, tyres maybe a stretch and the rear wing close to impossible.

This was my build a while back but I forgot to finish it!

Good luck!

i m thinking of replacing the motor for extra performance but i have no idea about KVs, turns, brushless or brushed. Any suggestions please?

Also....battery packs and chargers are another blind spot for me. What should be a good type to run with my tao2w? In reasonable prices of course.

Buyee from Japan is your best bet for boy sets. Still will not be inexpensive but they do come up from time to time. This was my first Tamiya car so very fond of it.

FYI I have never had good luck with stripping paint. Maybe the special Tamiya lexan cleaner would work but you would need a lot. I would just keep searching for a new body set. They are rare but do come up on the Buyee site.

How do you go buying from that website, with international shipping?

You create an account and link it to PayPal or a credit card. Shipping can be a bit expensive. Sometimes 50-75 US for a body or kit to the States. Good for very hard to find stuff. Basically acts like a broker for Yahoo auctions. I'v e used it a lot over the last couple years.

Hello all!

After rebuilding, cleaning and greasing my ta02 i was really anxious to test it on track.

My first impression was that is was rather sloooooowww! i dont remember how fast it used to run back in the old days but i am a bit dissapointed i must say. Are vintage models so slow? can i boost it up a bit? i run on dyna run racing stock motor s540.

May have it been that i replaced the factory's speed control with an esc?

There is a speed tuned gear set for the TA02 which helps a bit. Maybe smaller pinion to get you off the line faster? Modern ESC can't hurt. Battery condition?

Sorry to rebump an old thread but is the Supra bodyshell on the TA02W (58170) different to the one on the TL01 (58264)?

Unfortunately, yes. I say unfortunately because the later TL01 version was re-released recently (albeit without the racing sticker set), though I would have much preferred it if it had been the older one that had been reissued.

The later one is more blobby, jelly-mould like in appearance, and I don't like it.

Now Ive looked at them in detail I can see that. I wanted to fit the 2 piece wheels to my TL-01 Supra, but guessing I cant do that as the rears will be too wide

Oh - I actually don't know about the width of the later one. I often find that tamiya bodyshells allow a little extra room than the standard width wheels on most of their bodies anyway. So you might find they still fit.

Failing that, you can build the 2-piece wheels the other way around so that they have less offset. Would need to check they then don't foul the suspension, though.

Another alternative is to use the narrow ones both on the front and the rear, and again you can build them 2 ways and have 2 different offsets of play with.
