Beginner Paint Question

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

Soon I will be painting my first RC Body (Blitzer Beetle Black ABS?). I have some minor repairs to do with Tamiya basic putty and then plan to prime with fine surface light grey primer.

After that, I plan to use the spray can PS (polycarbonate) paints. I know these are designed for use with the clear poly bodies... but will this paint bond to the ABS/Primer? Can I use both the TS and PS spray paints on the same body?

I'm new and confused... and don't want to ruin anything. I prefer PS because one color I desire is not available in TS (Flouro Yellow).

Thanks for the help!

I have not tried that combo, but I know that mixing spray paints is fraught with danger.

i would get a piece of plastic and try painting them over each other. If they don’t bubble or separate you should be ok.

Tamiya now makes a clear coat in PS so you can paint abs body’s with ps then finish with the clear to obtain gloss.

there is no guarantee the ps paint will even be compatible with your primer.

Not sure on compatability but alot of Tamiyas r/c polycarbonate bodysets state to use PS paints on the plastic abs wings and mirrors now. So that side should be fine. I used PS30 Brilliant Blue to paint a set of wheels for my FF03 and the finish was very good and surprisingly glossy !, plus they have held up very well indeed with no flaming or anything. So if you choose to use PS paints I would just use PS paints and not mix and match with TS paints. But as above test on a spare bit of plastic to see if your primer is compatible, just in case it bubbles or something with the PS paint.

James.

Good input guys! Since it sounds like PS will work on other plastics, I will stick with all PS... now to find a safe primer for PS... Thanks!

Why don't you look at using automotive acrylic paint such as Holts Duplicolour or Halfords?  The are a lot cheaper to buy that the Tamiya spray cans, and the cans are usually larger as well..

Its what I use on the ABS hard bodies on my Tamiya trucks..

There's really no need to spend so much on paint unless it is for Lexan which requires a specialist paint and really only when you are sprainting the inside of a Lexan shell. Sprainting the outside is done with a light coat of Lexan paint and then finished with how ever many coats you want of inexpensive acrylic paint with thousands of more choices than Lexan paint. Any other plastic you can use acrylics from other manufacturers and get much, much better value for money. Even Core RC has a small selection of Lexan paints that are cheaper than Tamiya and 50% bigger cans.
