As I was walking to work this morning, a couple of army trucks came past me carrying tracked APCs on low-loaders.  The first thought that came into my mind is "those APCs fit quite neatly on those loaders - I thought they'd be a lot wider than that.  I thought they'd hang over the edge."

Then the part of my brain that has an answer to everything did a quick look through the Encyclopedia of Knowledge, which is mostly full up with Tamiya catalogs, and said "yes, but the lorries with be 1:14 scale and the APCs will be 1:16, that's why they fit on the loaders."

You know when its bad when your laying awake in bed not worrying about what bills are due but what the next thing you are going to do on your latest RC car project!

Isn't that a good thing if you can think about ya next RC build or project rather than stressing about bill's and real life?:) I do a lot of miles on the road with my work and the one thing that keeps me sane and calm is the thoughts of the RC builds or tinkering at the weekend's;)!

At least you weren't thinking 'I wonder if a 1:1 APC would fit on my driveway...?'

I was born in '71, so Tamiya was with me during both my own and Tamiya's golden era.  My taste in cars, war vehicles, and aircraft all have roots in Tamiya's offerings and box art.  Most of my pre-working age funds went to some sort of R/C or static model. I got out of R/C cars for ages (except for having something like a Slash basher around for when I couldn't fly helis) and starting getting into diecast big time over the last decade as with kids there was no time to build static and they net cost less then building one myself anyway.  I sold most of that collection for various projects(like a new fence for the house) but kept about 30 'favorites'.

Lo and behold my remaining fav's diecast are cars like Walter Wolf Countachs, NewMan/Vaillant/Rothmans/martini/Jager cars, etc. Just about everything I kept was offered as a Tamiya kit growing up.  Now I've got the re re bug(didn't even know they existed until last summer), so re-living my childhood again. Been flipping other 'collectibles' as of late from various fads of mine that came and went over the years to buy Tamiya products once again.  Since I've spent quite a bit of my spoils on ebay on 'practical' things, I can pretty much sell my other junk without guilt to get new stuff :)

How has Tamiya affected my everyday life?

1. I'm poorer.

2. Every spare space in the house & garage is now occupied by a car or parts for a car.

3. My other half stares at me even more with that looks of 'what the badword is wrong with you?'

4. I've almost developed a compulsion to rescue & restore every basket case model I come across (I may need an intervention soon).

5. I have to keep an Excel spreadsheet on my desktop to keep track of parts and models coming and going, mainly so I know where I've stored them!

Thats all fairly normal, right?! 😳

At this stage of my life I have a few small things I do all the time, kids and work taking over. Every sat and Sunday my evening routine is pop on my Williams Martini Racing Jacket (massive Williams f1 fan) , pop my canvas Tamiya bag in my pocket(has to be that bag, its now 3 years old and a small hole has appeared but I love it), pop the lead and harness on the dopey Basset Hound (she has a name, Bella)  and go for a walk. Return with usually a few ales, popcorn and some snacks all ready for the weekend films. :)

But on a stubborn note my usual Tamiya disappointments come to mind lately . Watching the WRC last weekend and think, "wow wish Tamiya would make some of these awesome new WRC cars" , the WRC is at its best point in the last 15 years imo, 380bhp cars and a shed load of top drivers. Or in the case of F1 last year "wow, wish Tamiya would release a few new 2017 F1 cars, they look amazing", yet we get an over priced generic F1 car a year late. Now hear is hoping they actually take note of worldwide race series and see how amazing the new indycars look and how amazing the racing actually is and maybe, just maybe the first time since the F103 we might get an official 'r/c Indycar?? Please, pretty please.

Or even the new Formula-E Gen 2 cars in parallel with the 2018-19 season... I can wait nine months.😂

Are you my life twin? (apart from I'm a bit older which kinda answers the question)

Driving down a road, mid conversion with the other half, seeing a school playground / skate park etc and mentally going through my RC car stock, wondering which would be the best option to take there, and what parts i'd need to buy etc, to be then brought down to earth with, "youre not listening to me are you, what was the last thing i said?".........

5. I have to keep an Excel spreadsheet on my desktop to keep track of parts and models coming and going, mainly so I know where I've stored them!

I started a new job 3 months ago.  They have no work for me to do, so they stuck me in a room with a load of other software developers with no work to do and said "developer, train thyself."

So I am in the process of writing an RC car database for my own collection.

I can enter and amend all the different cars I own, select their chassis type, give them a code and a description, and click a checkbox to determine if they are good to display or good to run.

I can add ToDo lists against each job, with a priority, due date, parts list, estimated time and estimated cost.  So I can track that, for example, I need to rebuild my TL01LA before the Iconic Cup starts in April, or that I need to design the decals for my Landfreeder and get them made up before I start masking for paint.

But the best bit (for me) is that I can add each car to one or more collections.  For example, my S14 Sylvia is in the Drift Car collection, but because it's a JDM car, it's also in the JDM collection, and because it has motorsport decals it's in the Motorsport collection.  My S15 isn't in Drift or Motorsport but it is in JDM, and it's also in Street Cars, along with my TA03FS-based Landfreeder pickup, which is also in the Ford Pickups collection along with my King Blackfoot and my CC01-based KBF-bodied scaler and my CC01-based Landfreeder.  Anything that's painted in my blue-and-silver SCRAPSpeed race livery is in my SCRAPSpeed collection.  Anything that is black or dark grey is in the Black collection.

Why is this important?

Well, last year, to make way for a baby room in the house, I moved into a new hobby room, which has much less shelf space.  I have to be really choosy about what's on display.  I can get about 10 touring cars along my top shelf; a bit less if they're buggies or MTs.

At the start of every month, I ask the app to pick my a random collection with at least 3 displayable cars.  It lists out the collection and all the displayable cars.  I pick those cars and put them on the shelf.  If there's space, I spin again; it'll pick out another collection with at least 3 cars (less if there's less space on my shelf) which are in a displayable state but are not already displayed on the previous collection.  I pick out those cars and put them on the shelf.  If I have any space left I can even spin again.

Those cars then get displayed for a month.  At the end of that month, I clear down all current displays and spin again.

That way, all my cars get their chance being displayed, my display shelf has some kind of coherence, and it takes all the indecision out of choosing a new display.  Oh, and if I find one displayable car that doesn't fit in any other collection with any other displayable cars, it gives me an excuse to go buy more cars so I never have a displayable car that doesn't have a partner to go next to it. :D
