Hi all, I wonder if someone can help with a completely baffling electric problem?

I have just bought a Mad Bull for my son and we are on the electrics stage and it is not working as expected, I get steering but no throttle. I am pretty sure that it is the ESC that's the issue. The setup is as follows:

  • Core RC - radio and receiver  - new
  • Tamiya TBLE-02S ESC - used in a previous car where it worked fine
  • Tamiya Torque Tuned motor  - used in a previous car where it worked fine
  • Absima servo - new
  • 3300mAh Ni-MH battery

I have tried the following:

  • The above setup with a new silver can motor - this didn't work
  • The above setup with a LiPo battery  - this didn't work
  • The above setup but with a Hobbywing Quicrun 1060 ESC - this worked fine
  • Put the above receiver in my GF-01 - this worked fine
  • The Torque Tuned motor in another car - this worked fine

At this point, I was certain it was the ESC so I tried another Tamiya TBLE - 02S ESC (brand new) - this also didn't work (steering but no throttle).
With both ESCs, when I turn the radio on and then the ESC power switch, I get one green flash and when I squeeze the throttle I get the green light coming on until maximum throttle where it turns off. This all agrees with the manual.

At this point I am completely stumped and have no idea what to do next other than buying another Hobbywing Quicrun 1060 ESC.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

Thanks for your reply @waterbok, I have double checked the manual and the green light shows that it is in brushed mode. Just in case, I ran through the setup again (in the dark to help me distinguish between the red and orange lights!), still no throttle. 🤔

SurreyDad, I got one that did this once. I sent an e-mail to Tamiya and they had me send it back and sent me a replacement no questions asked. I am in the US so I contacted TamiyaUSA, I don't know if you have a UK distributor similar to this, or just need to contact Tamiya Japan directly.

Thank you for your reply @Biz73, they are both over a year old (came in other kits), so not sure what the replacement options would be but....it is now working but I don't understand it.

I ran through the setup with ESC 1 to ensure that it was definitely in brushed mode - still didn't work

I ran through the setup with ESC 2 to ensure that it was definitely in brushed mode - still didn't work

I then put the ESC in the GF-01 and it started working, so back in the Mad Bull and it is working fine...well, one ESC is only going in reverse but the other one is working as expected.

you don't specifically mention you ran the TBLE throttle setup as per the confusing instructions. As not sure which core radio you have. I have a 3ch core code / tamico tac330 (same radio, different brand) radio which has all sorts of ABS / throttle curve functions and if these are messed about with i sometimes have had to re-run the TBLE throttle setup again.

Many thanks for your reply @gizard, it sounds like we have the same radio and your reply prompted me to run through the TBLE throttle setup and I am pleased to say that the car is now running exactly as expected.

I’ve tried 4 times to get mine to go but I have the exact same issue. Steering but no power. I get the single green light and alarm when I turn on the car to indicate it’s in brushed mode with reverse enabled. Dodgy motor maybe?! This is a brand new Hornet

As in every ESC, if it was installed before, and you switch the ESC to another setup... it would be mandatory to run the throtel setup again to pair it with the transmitter properly.

If the ESC has a reset buttotn then also reset it first or plug out the battery for 2-3min's.

He is right, you need to set the throttle up on the esc. It's the first step on page 2 of the instructions. Turn on the transmitter, hold down the Set button and turn on the esc. When the LED is red let go amdit will single flash. Put throttle to full forward and press again and it will double flash. Push to full reverse and press again and the light should go out. Wait 5 seconds then try using the car. The throttle should work now.

Sorry I should have been clearer, I’ve setup the throttle as described.

When I press the throttle the ESC makes a sound and the light goes green then goes out at full throttle and the sound stops

I will see if there is a reset option

Check the leads? For brushed you need to use the yellow and blue leads from the ESC to the green and yellow leads on the motor. The orange lead is spare.

I have the correct wire colours connected. I've followed this guide. It seems to match up to what you said except it talks about setting neutral before fwd and reverse. I tried to follow what you said but don't get the led sequence you mention

That article does seem correct. Maybe you are getting the orange and red lights mixed up? They are quite close together in colour. But, as the article says, make sure it is in brushed mode. Then turn tje esc off. Press and hold the set button and turn bqck on until you see the red light. No press the button again. You have set neutral. It should now be flashing single red and you pull the throttle to maximum. Hold and press again. Now double red flashing. Go full reverse, hold, press the set button again. The lights should switch off on the esc. Leave it for 5 seconds. It is set up.
