Is it possible to use a spare Tx/Rx channel on a Tx 2 position switch to turn on/off the lights on a TLU-01 without getting any extra hardware?

Yes, it's possible, but you do need more stuff.

What I did on the Pajero:

1. Get a remote-controlled switch. I got mine from Hobbyking.
2. Cut the power wire and route it through previously mentioned switch. I used the positive wire to interrupt, but I don't think it matters.
3. Plug that switch into a spare channel on your receiver.

4. Set the jumpers on the switch so that it switches on when the channel passes 50% throw (so it works as an on/off switch)
5. Optional: Set your failsafes in such a manner that when the radio turns off with the car turned on the lights turn off.

I've got some of the Hobbyking "pico" switches, they're just a relay so you need to route power thru it... but recently I've also bought some China switches custom made for driving LEDs, they even do flashing modes etc.

Added complication is that the TLU-01 expects input 7.2-8.4V... dunno if it'll like being fed BEC voltage 5-6V via receiver. The box does fancy switchmode circuitry to drop the current to the LEDs not just a simple resistance.

Can confirm the TLU-01 will accept a 6v BEC feed from an empty rx port. If you have EPA on your tx then you can switch it on and off without any extra hardware. What you will need to do is make a new power lead going from the JST connector on the TLU01 to a suitable plug for your rx.

Lights don't seem any dimmer despite the lower input voltage.

wow lot's of options thanks every one. in a click fest I ordered remote controlled switches from HK as Gooney bird suggested (but I needed some more servo's anyway) and actually I only have 1 TLU-01 on a cr-01 which also has 4WS etc. So I could set this up as ChrisRx718 suggests and then - some other vehicles I will put lights on without a TLU-01 I will use the remote switches with - jus

t need to remember which resistors to use with which LED's when building light circuits.!

thanks again ;)

I do a custom install for all my LEDs, can't stand rats nest of loose wires. LEDs usually like 20-30mA max current; I usually run both sides LEDs (eg left & right headlight) in series and I let then have 50mA.

I mainly use 330 & 220ohm 1/4W resistors, they're easy to differentiate (orange vs red) and just use multiples to increase wattage & raise/lower resistance required.

But these days... rather than buying components locally it's cheaper to pay $5 for something like these http://www.rcmart.com/yeah-racing-ultra-bright-light-with-holders-lk0001bu-p-25961.html?cPath=438_900:)
