I recently bought a re re Boomerang and want to upgrade the standard silver can. It came with the standard Tamiya Speed control which can run brushless motors, so i thought why not upgrade to one of these. I want a decent speed upgrade, does the 10.5T push out as much power as say a brushed BZ? I would still run Nimh batteries etc, not looking for super speed and performance.

Thoughts and advice would be most welcome

With a 10.5t you might need the Fan kit for the TBLE-02S. I use the TBLE-02S with a Tamiya TBLM-02 10.5t on a TT0-2 Type S chassis which is run on tarmac only generally and if does stop and overheat sometimes even with the fan going - can't remember the gearing but it is fairly high - you might get away with it with a Boomerang. Alternatively I run a TT-02B with fairly high gearing also, but with a Speed Passion MMM 13.5t motor along with the TBLE-02S but no Fan and it is generally fine. - Both running LIPO 2s batteries.

You think the 12.5T would be a better bet then? It says that equivalent to a 23t Brushed. But from my little experience there can be big differences just on 23t Brushed. or is it simply easier to buy a brushed? I will never use these a huge amount so am i paying more than i need too for durability i don't need.

I run a Trackstar 13.5T brushless in my Boomerang with a TBLE-02S on NiMH without a fan and it runs great. Just get the biggest pinion you can fit (17T for the Boomerang). The motor has adjustable endbell timing and that is right up too. I think that the brushless motor is the way to go and recommend both Trackstar and Speed Passion which are pretty cheap but give good performance and are decent quality.  13.5T seems to be a good option for most tamiya buggies, decent performance and no overheating of the ESC

I wouldn't buy the Tamiya motors as they seem very expensive for what they are. I also (personal preference) wouldn't bother with brushed motors anymore as the kit ESC doesn't run lower turn motors and brushed motors reuqire maintenance unlike brushless

In saying all that a mate runs a Tamiya Superstock 23T motor in his Novafox with a TBLE-02S and it goes really well and runs fine even though its out of spec.

Thanks for the advice Jonathan, much appreciated. How do I know which 17 tooth pinion to get? Are they all the same?

You need to get the right pitch, I bought the Tamiya one which is part 54628.  It says its for DT02 and DT03 but fits the Boomerang too.  The bonus is this one is steel as well so a good upgrade from the aluminium (cheese!) one that comes in the kit and wears out if you run the car a lot.

You don't have to buy the Tamiya one, you can buy any Mod 08 pinion.  Some people say that 32p is the same but its slightly different so while it will work it will be noisy.

RW Racing is the only pinions I will buy imo. They have been perfect for me through the years even in the 90's. Def worth the extra £ . Same goes for their spur gears.

If I got the turnigy  trackstar do I need wires and need to solder them on?

You definitely need to solder them on. I'm 99% sure that the ESC came with the wires. The motor came with the sensor cable though.

Its just standard 12awg or 14awg wire so not a big deal to source, I buy mine from banggood.com as its cheap and shipping is included in the price so no surprises when you get to the checkout.

Pretty much anything would be an upgrade over the silver can motor. I’ve used a Neewer 13.5T motor/TBLE-02 combo in a Tamiya M-05 and also in an Arrma Granite truck…both move like scalded rats and the TBLE-02 seems to handle it pretty well. I've had it overheat in the truck a few times, but that is a pretty heavy model and it usually was when I was running it through tall grass. I probably wouldn't go any "hotter" than a 13.5T motor with that ESC

I highly recommend the Neewer 13.5T brushless motor, it seems to be pretty bullet proof.
