New Toyota Yaris Rally Car?

Recommended Posts

The recent posting on Tamiyablog includes a listing for 1:1 vehicles on show, including a Toyota / Gazoo Racing Yaris WRC. However, the accompanying image shows an RC Yaris..

Is this a new model? I wonder what size it will be and what will underpin it? MF-01X?

From the wheels which look like the ones used on various touring cars since the Mercedes 190e on the TA01 chassis, I'd say it based on a 190mm touring car, so I'd hazard a guess at being TT02 based, quite possibly 251mm wheelbase as the Yaris is a small hatchback.

Good to see Tamiya releasing a couple of newer rally cars. I know the Hyundai i20 has a limited release in XB format at the moment, but I'd guess thats as they haven't released a light blue paint that matches the Hyundai's paint scheme yet, so maybe that will get a wider kit based release down the line along with matching paint.

Now, time to re-release a couple of older rally bodies please Tamiya.

Definitely the meanest-looking Yaris I have ever seen!

MF-01X would be a wonderful choice, though I have to wonder about the rear-mounted motor on that chassis and the shell... TT-02 sounds like a safer bet, and XV-01 just a rueful "what if"...

Wow finally after god knows how many years Tamiya finally starting to make decent WRC bodies again :) looks great too. Although a super low version with tarmac style wheels and tyres would look even better imo.

Not sure if this is the reason but rally cars these days have a smaller wheel base (like a fiesta instead of a focus) thus a modified touring chassis might be too big if they intend to stay with a 1/10 scale shell.

It's a shame as I'd love to see rally cars make a come back on a decent chassis.

Agreed, especially now with the new 380bhp cars . 👍

According to here: http://www.wrc.com/en/wrc/about-wrc/manufacturers/toyota-yaris-wrc/page/4178-18667-4178--.html the Yaris wheelbase is 2511mm, so perhaps we're looking at another TA-02s as the chassis.

Yeah but Tamiya isn't known for having super accurate wheelbases all the time, there are a few of their car bodies that are well off, the Peugeot 406 STW for example was far too short in Tamiyas version compared to the real car. ;)

It might still be possible - the TA-02S is listed at a 236 mm wheelbase, so it would depend if it makes sense, proportionally speaking, to use a chassis that short for the new Yaris.

It'll be a TT-02 or TT-01E. 1/10 of that wheelbase would be 251mm. Exactly what these chassis in their short configurations are (Capri, Suzuki SX4, 911 Carrera RSR).

Just a random thought. Alot of these cars have wide arched.  Maybe it's hard getting their shells to fit over the chassis..

I don’t care how they release it, on what chassis or what wheelbase.

As long as they release the darn thing full stop. And not the stupid 1000pcs to one country only.

VW Touareg wheels by the looks of it. Seems decent, but as above posters suggest I wouldn't expect this to be anything more exotic than a standard TT02.

Where can you even watch WRC these days?

Get alot of live stages on BT Sport in full HD too. Coverage is pretty good. :) Still nowhere near Moto GP though ;)

It hasn't technically been announced yet. I'd guess an official announcement before the Shizuoka Hobby Show in early May, probably released late summer.

I thought exactly the same.  Which is a shame - the Yaris is a small car, it should be on a small chassis, like the MF01X, IMO.  Even with the 251mm wheelbase, a 190mm body will look really stupid on my shelf next to my Imprezza WRX.  This "putting small cars on big chassis" issue is the sole reason I've never bought a Tamiya Civic body.

(Assuming the WRC version is based on the factory wheelbase and not a bigger car - not sure what the rules are these days but back in the bad old days the Escort Cosworth was based on a Sierra chassis and the Metro 6R4 used a Maestro wheelbase).

(Again IMO) one of the issues Tamiya has had for a long time is trying to squeeze narrow bodies over wide chassis.  A wide-arched WRC body would fit nicely over a small chassis with some chunky wheels to fill it.

My favourite example of this problem is Tamiya's S15 Silvia shell - the boxart for the Coppermix Silvia shows it looking mean over a set of JDM deep dish drift rims; the finished kit comes with a set of wheels that would look more at home on a shopping car because the wide ones on the box would never go under the shell.

The Yaris is now official.

https://tamiyablog.com/2018/04/tamiya-58659-toyota-gazoo-r-wrt-yaris-wrc-tt-02-chassis-to-be-presented-at-57th-shizuoka-hobby-show-2018/

I was hoping for a new rally body suitable for the XV01, but this is for the TT02 chassis and as others have said it looks likely to be a short wheelbase.  Nice to know modern rally cars are on their radar though.

That rear wing will be lucky to survive more than one roll over.  Look at the size of it on the real car.

Isn't that true of the real car, though? ;)

Surely, the XV-01 can be modified to a 251 mm wheelbase or so, which should be that of the short TT-02? Not necessarily in a straightforward way, though... It sure would be an even better off-road car on that chassis!

I would settle for something like a TT-02RA; long CVA's with frp towers, turnbuckles, ball races, lexan dustcover & foams for the chassis tub, rally blocks and a torque tuned motor. Priced the same as the drift spec cars would seal the deal.
