Has any company ever released an early Escort rally car? I know there are shells available but they are either really expensive or look fugly. I'd love to build a rwd Escort. It has to be one of the most iconic rally cars to date. Tamiya already do the Zakspeed Capri, why not the Zakspeed Escort too?

Come on Tamiya, rear wheel drive chassis, Mk1 in Alan Mann colours or a forrest arched hard as nails Mk2 shell in Cossack or maybe Yale liveries.

I'd buy both in a heartbeat.

I've not seen any kits either which is why I've opted to custom build may own. Retro Racing has made the best detailed shells I've seen of the Mark 1 and Mark 2 Ford Escort and even a Mark 1 Cortina.  Unfortunately the are made from PETG or at least not polycarbonate.

Maybe its a licensing issue, as there are lots of other cars around from the time,  Golfs, Fiats etc. Even with model kits, there are few around and they are pretty pricey as well.

LOL.

interesting reply - assuming this is based on your opinion that the Kamtec shell is expensive/fugly and of course your opinion is yours to express as you see fit

Personally, I have a desire for the old escorts myself and was in the same situation at the OP, for me the best option I could find is the Kamtec shell, in my opinion it's affordable, the flat sides give me the option to cut to suit oversize wheels (that I currently have on the TL-01B) and try to make sense/reason of a 4WD escort, clearly the shell is not scale perfect but with some creativity and the addition of some styrene (a bit of body shaping in the lower sections), I think it has the potential to become something worthwhile and make for a good project but of course, that's just my opinion

I look forward to seeing it.  I hope it turns out great.

I guess I've been spoiled by accurate Tamiya bodies.  Personally I just can't get past those that look like they've partially melted or are being looked it in a fairground wobbly mirror.  Even my Kyosho RS500 shell offends me a bit from certain angles, though it's better than most.

Good job we're all different innit ?

I've always thought the Rally Legends: Rothmans Escort looks the biz. I use the Rally Legends: Fiat 131 body shell on my DF-03Ra and that looks okay too. The only problem is they are getting a bit scarce now.

This is my rally legends mk11 that I managed to find a clear shell. And in no way is a "fugly " shell. The kamtec shells really ain't a good representation of what of them. This will be your only way of getting back to what you have want. This is shell is sitting on a tt-01 chassis.

In 2010 Retro Racing released two nice Ford Escort bodies. You can sometimes find them on ebay. See: http://rc-junkies.nl/news/index.php/2010/10/opel-manta-a-body-voor-110-rc-cars-van-retro-racing/

If you find one be aware that the material is not polycarbonate/lexan but PET. PET doesn't accept PS paints so you have to use other paint.

ohhhhhhhhh man a opal manta shell  i would love one of them as my dad had one back in the 70's

Lovely Escort Topforcein!

The retro racing shell looks spot on. Much like the rally legends shell though they never seem to be available.

I guess I will have to pony up and get one at some point.

But what rwd chassis would be best suited?

I dont know much about  rally chassis or if a rwd rally chassis exists.

Most touring/rally chassis are 4WD so if you really want rwd I reckon it will be a case of removing the front and centre driveshafts and front gearbox internals.

There is a cool M04RR thread on the builds where someone made a rear motor rwd chassis out of an M04, some TL01 and 3D printed parts

That is stunning, would look amazing with a detailed interior !! But the kamtec one is an utter joke of a body imo, looks nothing like an escort lol.

On regards to chassis any 4wd shaft drive chassis would do and just remove the prop shaft, TL01 would be a good base. Would be fun seeing an escort shell on a rwd chassis powersliding sideways on a dusty gravel area just like the real thing :)

That needs to be put back on the shelf where it belongs, all nice n safe before anything happens to it.... I feel faint imagining the natural daylight fading that paintwork already.... omg, is that a dust particle just landed on the front drivers wheel?!!! Arrggghhhhh. shelf shelf shelf immediately!

That is a beauty.

i plan on buying a cockpit for it when i go to tonys tamiya house when my manta ray comes in as the original shell for the chassis is the escort wrc  plus i also have the m3 bmw shell for it also and i do swop them know and again but never run them.

tbh jason i took it off the shelf for the photo as you can see it is covered in dust as i aint cleaned my display in a few weeks and i could never bring myself to use it either although the chassis has been used a few times when me and my 2 lads go drifting.
