So... that Axial SCX10 II kit box that has been sitting around finally got relieved from furniture duty as a makeshift stand.

I can't say this is going to be an exciting build as I'm pretty much building it box stock for now...  The more interesting stuff will probably come later... much later...

Part 1 - Axles

I've had these Xtra Speed AR44 Axle housing since I bought the kit.  Finally get to use them.

Starting on the work...

Yay... axles done.  Like others.. I needed to dremel the paint off the inside bearing slot in the Xtra Speed Axle housings.

Part 3 - Shocks

Part 4 - Transmission

So... the kit comes with that newer transmission.  I actually bought the new upgraded older transmission with metal gears (AX31439).

For this build... I am sticking with the kit provided transmission for now.

Part 5 - Drive Shafts

Will probably get metal ones down the road. For now these will do.

Part 6 - Chassis

Finally getting around to putting the chassis together.

Used a Boom Racing 25T servo horn for the steering servo.

Front Axle mounted

Rear Axle and shocks mounted

Using Hobbywing 1080 Brushed ESC

ESC put in place... Bumpers,rock sliders, and body posts mounted.

Part 7 - Wheels and Body

Going to use the stock tires and wheels for now.  Will not be gluing them like the instructions say, as I'll probably swap out the foams and change to beadlocks.

Starting on the body prep work...  Forgot to take pictures...

Mounted the Tires/Wheels

Finished adding some of the decals and plastic scale details to the body.  

Mounting the roof rack was a !@#  Whoever designed the piece that mounts inside the body should be tortured.... because that's what it was... torture.  For some reason this part of the build seemed like the hardest part.  The screw holes were too small for the screws and I tried to brute force it.  I finally wised-up (hey I'm still jet-lagged and not thinking clearly) and used a screw to open up the hole in the plastic piece while not trying to mount the rack...before finally mounting the rack on.  

On top of that part of the roof rack was missing a screw hole which was weird.  I had to drill out a hole for the screw (passenger side 1st screw of 3) so that I could mount the 2 parts of the roof rack together.

I had exactly the same problem mounting the roof rack on mine. It took me ages and several choice words to get it to fit.

I know right!!??  They could've definitely found an easier way to mount the rack.  Or at least made that bracket better.

Still it looks good when it's fitted, especially when you put the light bar onto it as well, it really finishes the truck off. 

How are you finding the shocks? I find that if I even looked at them the wrong way they leaked. I ended up getting two pairs of Yeah Racing Desert Lizard shocks and they look fantastic but need a bit of fiddling around to get them to work perfectly.

I have been looking at the SCX for a while now. I found a detailed Unimog bodykit that is designed with the SCX in mind.

I have never owned an Axial before. What is your take on the chassis and the build. How different to Tamiya quality do you think it is?

I really enjoyed the build, the instructions are a bit unclear and incorrect in a couple of places but if you have a couple of builds under your belt then you'll be fine. 

What I really like about the axial is it's just a starting point. Out of the box it's a fantastic machine but when it comes to upgrades you're limited only by your imagination or wallet. You can go full scale with hardbodies and full interiors or you can stick on a honcho style body and 2.2 wheels and see what you can't get the truck to go over (not many things will stop it).

I recently built a Wraith Spawn kit and made the comment that it didn't leave me with the feeling of wanting to build another. After I left that comment, and some research on rccrawler, I realized I was wrong. Box stock is indeed just a starting point. It's fun in the back yard as is, but you're right. You can build them by imagination. I've now got raised shock mounts, longer shocks, and the dig tranny kit on the way, as well as a few other cosmetic upgrades. I'm going to go for the "how much articulation is too much?" plan.

 

@khyzersoze Are you going to add the dig function to yours? I believe they both share the same transmission.

@Kingfisher The kit uses a different transmission than the RTR.  The RTR has the same transmission as the Wraith.  The kit transmission was meant to be an upgraded transmission capable adding 2-speed functionality.

Got around to doing a few updates to the SCX10.2 a few weeks ago.  I wanted to try getting this truck finished up so that I can start running it more.

One of the things that always bugged me about this truck was that front bumper that sticks way out front.

Since I don't plan to really use a winch or have a winch, I thought changing the front bumper was in order.

First thing I tried out was to trim the pegs of the stock bumper to see if I could get it to tuck in more.  I also drilled out some new mounting hole positions (not shown).

It's a lot more tucked in, but I don't like how it just looks like a flat slab jutting out.

Next bumper I tried out was the SSD Rock Shield for SCX10

Rough approximation in differences of clearance

Bumper is solid, looks good, with good clearance...

But.... I don't really like the way it looks with the XJ body.  I'll probably keep it for use on another truck that has a narrower front.

Finally I decided to try the Axial Dingo front bumper...

This one looks a little more promising.

I like the way that it protects the full width of the body.

Final decision made to keep the Dingo bumper.

I forgot to take pictures of the knuckles, but it's a really tight precise fit for the bearings.  You pretty much have to push it in straight perfectly.  If it's slightly put in at a minor angle it gets stuck.

A few from today's hill climb.  Rig really surprised me with how well it did today.  The Pro-Line BFG Krawlers have also become my favorite tire.
