What's the normal thing to do about speed controllers in a Rough Rider these days? I want to use the waterproof radio box but I'm not keen on MSC's and I'm worried that an ESC would overheat if in a box. Do I risk an ESC or put up with rubbish speed control? The car will be fully ball-raced and I'm planning to use a stock motor and 3000mAh cells. Cheers. [8D]

I am using a ESC in my RR although I dont us the car much.

I am only using a basic MTronics 27T ESC with the standard 540 so I would have thought heat wouldn't be a major issue.

I remember in my old RR the BATTERY used to get really hot when I ran it and that was with the stock MSC.

Must've been a fast Rough Rider! [:D] Thanks for that - with each comment I'm becoming less worried! [;)]

I used a Novak racer in a RR before, used a trinity 14 turns. No heating problem. Nothing got damaged.

Hello,

no worries at all - just do it! I've run both my Rough Rider and F-150 with ESCs - even in hotshot (which has much less space for air in the box compared to SRBs).

Generally ESCs just turn themselves of if they overheat - never happens with standard mabuchi though..

With ESC you get better control of the car and much longer running time. OK - some puritanists may say that ESCs are not how these were run in early 80's. Yes, you're right on that one.. On the other hand, many of us have cut off the 80's mullets as well.

You mean my Mullet's out of fashion now? DOH! I agree on the switching off theory but having fried 2 Ripmax 'no limit' ESC's in my (plenty of air) RC10T4 I'm wary of hot ESC's! It's partly why I went brushless in the T4 but I can't afford another system for the RR! I've got one of those cheap black(standard?) Tamiya ESC's in my King Cab so maybe I'll get another for the RR. I'm looking at ESC's at the moment anyway (need one for my Jugg2) so I'll report my findings! Cheers Juha!

Realize that a stock 540 isn't going to put much strain at all on an esc. I run an older futaba in my runner with a Blue end bell black motor. you can see it tucked in the box in this picture

I have never had any overheating problems. I am not sure about Ripmax esc's as to whether they are up to the task. Were you running a crazy mod motor in your T4? I run a 17turn in my sons T3 with a Novak XRS and haven't had any problems with it.

Right I've gone off you now - that RR chassis is far too nice! No motor in the T4 was a Peak with plenty of turns ...having said that it did seize once (landed the car on it hard) so I bent back the tabs, took it apart and freed it off maybe it was running pre-loaded due to a slightly out of true commutator? Dunno. Due to a separate issue I will never by anything with the Ripmax or Hobbystore name anyway so there's no chance of having another! [8D]

Even with the best ESC overheating and eventual burnout can still ocur if the motor is geared too high or there is binding in the gearbox due to badly meshed gears. This is still quite common problem for those of us trying to get the fastest out of our cars.

Hi James, the gearing is spot on and the (stealth) gearbox was in perfect tune too - no, I reckon Ripmax ESC's just aren't up to the punishment I give them with my left thumb! ..and before people start on me the T4 was deliberately bought and built as 'expendable' to save my Tamiyas from grief!
