Hi fellow TC’ers, can I please ask your collective advice on a potential choice of  next RC

To quickly summarise I’m torn between a few Monster Trucks in 1/10 size.

I’ve had a 2wd Stampede before so don’t want one of those again, nice truck but a bit tippy over and not too controllable in the air.. the curse of 2WD I know!

My requirements are :

1) Eventually I will want it running on 2s lipo ( and a 4000ish KV Motor), obviously this isn’t an issue for a brushless ready truck but I’m not sure which brushed versions can take brushless in the future ( strong enough gears) so it will influence whether I buy the brushed or brushlesss version from the outset.

2) It has to have adjustable body posts so it can wear different truck bodyshells.

3) Spares have to be available.. preferably in the UK - I’m thinking A Arms, Front And Rear hubs and suspension hinge pins - purely as that’s what I used to break on previous MT’s.

Thats it.

Trucks that I like the look and price of are listed in no particular order below but if you know any I’ve missed please mention them :

Kyosho Monster Tracker 2WD - brushed only (£125)

Maverick Strada MT 4WD  - brushed (£129) or brushless (£185)

Arrma Granite 2wd  - brushed (£159)  or brushless (£219)

Arrma Granite 4wd - brushed (£195)

HPI Jumpshot 2WD only - brushed (£170) or brushless (£220)

ECX Ruckus 2WD - brushed (£160 USA) or brushless (£250 USA)

ECX Ruckus 4WD - brushed (£200 USA) or brushless (£270 USA)

The ECX Ruckus looks popular in the USA but it’s not being sold in the UK right now - but there are some clean 2nd hand examples on EBay UK, must be owners who bought them from Maplins before they went bankrupt, but if I have to buy spares from USA that’s a pain.

I’m pretty open to all the above trucks  - favouring the Maverick the least because the chassis looks so low compared to the Bodyshell ( dragging its belly look)

Are there any recommendations or concerns anyone knows about for running and getting spares for any of the above, or, any impending company bankruptcies I should worry about?

Edit : Scrap the Monster Truck, I’ve just bought the Team Associated Trophy Rat 2WD!

You've missed the obvious one from your list - the Monster Beetle. Other than all your requirements on your list its by far the best looking.

I think the only thing it ticks off your list is the multiple bodyshells though...I'm not helping...

Hehe, We have a saying in the UK you might not be familiar with. It goes like this - you’re having a 🦒 ( giraffe)

I DO (not) like that red MB shell though 🤭

how about this for a little extra? a mix of old and new and seemingly good reviews, theres another bodied ver as well

OMG!

This hadn’t even scraped my radar, thanks Taffer, you’ve just made me question the whole wanting a Monster Truck thing with that Trophy Rat.

I see it can even wear a certain Proline Bodyshell that I've wanted for absolute ages...

The ECX stuff is absolutely brilliant, often beats Traxxas stuff in tests but is right down towards the budget end of the market. The only issue is like you say, currently no UK distributor so you need to wait for parts most of the time. I'd have to say it's about the best choice for the money though, punches well above it's weight. I should have got one from the Maplins ebay shop when they were selling them for £59!

The Maverick Strada is a re-branded HSP Brontosaurus. It's also sold under a few other brands too. It is a little low slung in comparison to some trucks but it still does pretty well off road and can land jumps with no issues. It handles like a dream on road too, very resilient to rolling over for a truck.

It has a lot of bells and whistles for the price, the only notable omission is a clutch but the drivetrain seems to be tough as nails, the spur gear is metal as standard and seems to be able to handle a lot of abuse.

I recently got a new brushed HSP for a price I can only describe as bonkers: £78! That included a flysky radio and 2000mah nimh pack. That was a badword of a lot of truck for the money! Of course the nimh pack, motor and ESC weren't used for long by me and I put my own brushless system in there but the Flysky TX and RX are still very much in use!

The seller appears to have sold out of them now unfortunately although they have the brushless version for £129 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-10-SCALE-RADIO-CONTROL-HSP-BRONTOSAURUS-PRO-MONSTER-TRUCK-4X4-CAR-2-4G/332624681133?hash=item4d71f9d8ad:g:0VsAAOxyXWdQ878-

It's not the best truck by any means bit I've found it to be pretty sturdy and VERY versatile. I'm running it with a sensored Graupner 13.5T motor and it's a great all rounder on 2s and on 3s it really get's the pulse racing! I'd probably take an ECX or Arrma first if I had the choice but for £78 I'm happy with that I got, I think it's a very decent all rounder.

2s inc some really slow uphill at the start to show how smooth the sensored motor is:

3s. Didn't really open it up much here, tricky to keep it in frame and concentrate on not crashing even when the camera is attached to the remote!:

I can't really speak to the arrma Granite Mega 4x4, but I do own the 4x4 senton Mega. I put a castle 4600 KV motor and Sidewinder SV4 in it, and stock gearing and transmission handle it just fine.

Great truck for the money. Durable, and takes a pounding.

The granite Mega uses the same setup its chassis is just a little shorter so I assume the comments should hold for this model as well.

Yes the Ruckus does look tough as old boots, glad to see it can handle brushless power and 3s too, it’s a decent size too as it’s quite a bit longer than the HPI Jumpshot for example. Just a pity about spares from the US.

The Traxxas Bigfoot looks ok too but the Stampede isn’t appealing to me right now.

The Arrma Granite 4WD (brushed) apparently has plastic gears ( if they release a BLX 4WD it would surely have metal gears) and a few have stripped them on 2s lipo with 4000 odd kv motors.

However after spending a few hours researching the Team Associated Trophy Rat Truck I’ve decided that’s the truck for me... the AVC ( they call it Dynamic Vehicle Controller) looks brilliant... with its gain control I’ve seen it brake to a stop on tarmac from full speed in a dead straight line... I’ve never had a rear wheel drive 2wd be able to do that.

Its ground clearance might not be up the with a MT as I was originally looking for but I’ll sacrifice that this time round as I’m sure it will still cope with some grass.

This Trophy Rat has only been out since January 2018 and I can only find maybe 20 videos on Youtube... hope I can be the first to speed run it on 2 and 3s lipo!

( I still need to man up and actually spend the hefty chunk to buy it, but I can squint my eyes when I click pay now!)

I’ve had to sell a DT02, F104, F103 and a TA01 Escort Cossie to raise the capital for it....a new self imposed rule... sell cars I won’t  run for ones I will.

I’ll post it up when it’s here ;)

Another solid option is the new MST MXT-1, tons of good reviews online and from my experience MST makes good products.
