Hi folks,

I have an old, (but in excellent condition) Blackfoot. At the moment the only thing that's stopping it from working is that on to the drive shafts has worn out. The old type has a 'bolt head' kind of fitting unlike the ones we now know with a 'T' style end. I'm wondering if anyone know if the shafts from the newer Blackfoot Extreme would fit. I know that if they did fit I'd probably have to get some new rear wheels to tak the Hex hub.

If anyone has any ideas I'd be eternally grateful. Even if I could source a new pair of the old ones I'd be happy.

Hope to hear from some of you soon.

Kind regards,

Karl.

The hex driveshafts on your truck are simular to the ones used on Monster Beetle, Frog and Subaru, unless i´m making a big mistake here...

My Monster Beetle also have a tendancy to "knack" with one of the rear wheelsm so it probably also needs a replacement shaft... Perhaps the Bush Devil shafts are possible to fit to the Blackfoot also??.. However, i am not sure if they are a useable size, length and all that.. In addition, you would also have to change the shafts exiting the gearbox itself..

Cheers

And by the way.. I would guess that the Blackfoot Extreme have ot the newer type shafts with the "T" in the end, and therefore, not a match, unless you get your hands on a complete gearbox og drivetrain, as i´m not sure, the Extreme shafts will fit into the old style gearbox

Thanks for the reply.

I have replacement 'cups' that exit the gear box which would take the normal shafts of newer models. I'll have to have a look through the 'Manuals' section to see if anything resembles the ones I have. Thanks for the info, I'll start looking!

Kind regards,

Karl.

Hmm, TA02 drive shafts. I have a TA02 fully working chassis and can tell you that they are far too short. But then again, I don't know what a 'super blackfoot' is!! The only two models of the Blackfoot is the one that came out in the 80's and now the Blackfoot Extreme. Do you know any of the part numbers for the 'super blackfoot' axcels Snake? Many thanks for the reply mate.

Kind regards,

Karl.

Sorry Snake, that was supposed to read. "The only two models of the Blackfoot that I know of are, the one that came out in the 80's and now the Blackfoot Extreme.

I posted the reply and it sounded a bit snooty the way I had written it. It's not meant that way I can asure you!

Karl, I know it may look short, but ta02 dogbones should fit, if i remember correctly. even if they don't, you can use the ta03 or ta04 longer dogbones. as for part number, take a look at the bush devil manual at tamiya club (same as super blackfoot, different body), you should find the part number there.

Karl, i have a couple sets of drive shafts with the boots as well, restored a monster beetle last year with the intention of making it a runner, then decided it was too good to trash, by which point i had assimilated a collection of spares that i knew wore out quickly!!

I would be happy to sell u a set at the price i paid for them, drop me an email if u are intrested.

hopefully im not throwing a spanner in the works lol

im guessing your truck is the original 1980s blackfoot?

if so, have you checked the trucks diff? hopefully its just a worn drive shaft as they are far easier to replace, but the diffs in the original blackfoot wear out, causing a crunching noise when you accellerate.

Hi mate,

It is just the end of one of the drive shafts that are worn, the gearbox works a treat as the vehicle has hardly been used from new. Is it just a case of sourcing one or two of the end pieces, pulling the old ones out and slotting in the new one? What I'd ideally like to do is to transfer the whole drive shafts and axels over to the 'normal' type that we see nowadays. All in put is most welcome as I'm not very clued up and the old stuff. Pretty dumb on the new stuff come to think of it!!!

Thanks for the reply.

I have a set of the oldfrogshot-made outdrive axles, and I can tell you they are really well made and work a treat. Converts the Frog-style rear end to use either the 39mm TA04 (with spacer) or 42mm TB02 dogbones, when used with the TA04 gearbox joints.

Plus the diff on the Frog/Blackfoot isn't that bad, it's the metal gearbox sides that are the problem. They tend to flex outwards allowing the diff to separate then slip, which trashes the gears. You may need to use some thin washers to shim up the diff to have it last well. Or, you can tap one of the drive cups and run a screw through the diff (threadlock it in) in place of the diff axle shaft to keep it all in place (another oldfrogshot solution!).

If you decide to use a set of the hex driveshafts, then the best way to make them last is to pack them with a good blob of molybdenum grease, and ensure the rubber boot is well sealed to keep sand and dirt from turning the grease to grinding paste. I used this technique on my Frog, and the hex shafts have lasted extremely well - so well that the front suspension wore out first. The car still has the original hex shafts.

I got the tip back in the 80s with my Brat, to press the two gearplates together in a vice. Not to much of cource. Worked fine with my Brat and my 540 Black motor (man i was so proud of my Black motor)
