Careful with this setup you have pictured here; To my eye, it appears that the heat sink may be very close to shorting your motor terminals :unsure:

I didn't even think of that! 

I haven't run the car with the heat sink on yet.

Does this look ok? I don't see it making a short or am I mistaken?

That's better, but just keep in mind that any potential bump could cause the heatsink to slide the .1mm margin you've left yourself :unsure:

I'd consider trimming the plastic guard or the heat sink fins (or both) to leave a good enough gap that a small knock won't land it on top of the brush holder metal or worse.

Also meant to respond earlier regarding coil continuity -- A cheap ohm meter could go a long way for you here. Although I'd also assert that those blued coils already indicate motor failure. Once that super thin enamel insulation gets cooked like this, you end up getting shorts when the windings heat up and compress against one another. It's also a self-feeding damage cycle since the coils getting hot just further degrade the insulation, and you get more shorts, heat, rinse & repeat ;)

Thanks OCD I really appreciate the info I'll trim the guard as I have a spare.

Messing about with these hopped up motors has been costly (could've bought 2 brushless combos by now)

But it has been a learning exercise.

So if this doesn't work I'm going to put some middle of the road combos on and admit defeat! (We'll see)

Thanks to everyone who has commented and given tips.

I wouldn't have found out half as much by myself.

Right !

I've set everything up for a run with my son and the ESC in one car acknowledges the battery and power on then the steering works but won't command drive...

Exactly the same as the quicrun 1060 did with the silver can a couple of years ago which led us to change the ESC.

How do I test the ESC to see if it's toast or not?

I am on the brink of brushless now as this motor issue has gone on long enough. 😶

If it were to happen...

(which is very possible now) I am looking at a goolrun combo.....

Connect the motor directly to a battery, does it spin ?

You could put a voltmeter on the motor connections from the esc, I would also swap the steering servo to channel 2 and the esc to channel 1 in the receiver, prove that you don't have an issue there. 

Those gool brushless systems are cheap and cheerful - many have had no problem with them, but i have seen several people comment that the esc packs up, if I remember correctly some of them have literally melted/burnt. I don't have any direct experience but I see people suggesting the Trackstar setups from hobbyking as well as SkyRC and Hobbywing Ezrun.  Probably worth doing a search.

I connected it and it ran.

I will get a meter tomorrow but it's similar to the quicrun symptoms so doesn't look promising.

I'll have a search for those set ups.

Anyone is welcome to throw in any comments/views/advice as I think brushed technology may well be done for me so it's back to school and start trying to get my head around the next thing...
