That's a toughie.

I had to go with Egress in the end, based on your comment about scarcity. I've got the impression that they're going to be slim pickings.

If they weren't going to be scarce, for me then the first choice would be the Avante, on looks, build and nostalgia. I picked one up as soon as they became available this last time round, but there are still plenty to be had even now. However, it's an Avante, and I'd think it hard to be a Tamiya nut without one.

Optima has been out for a couple of years. Interest is waning judging by the final price of one on ebay today, but they are a great buggy and there's plenty about it seems. The chain drive is just sooo cool :D, and it just drives so sweet.

Turbo Scorpion looked great in the idea, but I wasn't blown away by the build. I'm much more taken with my Tomahawk.

If it's solely a question of scarcity, then Optima all day long

Tamiya cranked out a relatively large number of both the Avante & Egress, while Kyosho barely even has a distribution network remaining outside of Japan. There's going to be even fewer Optimas sold compared to the cheaper/more widely-appealing Turbo Scorpion, however I don't really think the margin will be much. Then if you couple these low sales numbers with the fact that Kyosho as a company may soon cease to exist? IMO these are the future must-haves that will be difficult if not nearly impossible to obtain.

Not knowing if you intended on running it or not, I went with the Egress. It was ultimate Tamiya at their peak. While the Avante may look more lovely, the Egress makes a better runner. It still has beautiful HiCap shocks and an awesome double deck carbon graphite chassis.

The Turbo Scorpion is nice and if its like the other Scorpion-based vehicles, a surprisingly capable runner. One nice thing Kyosho did with its reissues was to go through the whole model and make it significantly better. Tamiya just seemed to fix the outright flaws (like the original, weak Avante/Egress uprights). In the end the Turbo was too similar to the other Scorpion vehicles for me to justify adding it to the collection

The Optima was great just like the Scorpion. Giving us the choice between belt or chain drive was a very nice addition. I was honestly very impressed with the job Kyosho did (in many ways better than Tamiya). You can tell somebody at Kyosho had passion for it. Its a nice bit of kit with a lot of metal. If the Egress wasn't a dream car of mine and I just wanted a nice runner for less cash outlay, I would have gone with the Optima.

I went for the Optima because the Javelin wasn't listed.  The Kyosho rere's seem to be getting harder to come by and with Kyosho being bought out who knows what that means.   I haven't built my Optima or Javelin yet but did build a Scorpion.  The quality was amazing and well worth the price.

Having said that,  my next is an Egress because I missed it the first time around.

Great input.  Thanks everyone!

Just to add, I've been pretty much building shelf queens lately.  I have a Tomahawk and Scorpion with the intention of eventually building an Optima, Turbo Scorpion and Javelin.

As far as the poll, looks like it's neck and neck between the Optima and Avante with the Optima having the slight lead.  I've narrowed my decision to either a Egress or Optima.

My biggest fear is whichever I don't purchase now, if I eventually want it say next year, I will have to pick up on the secondary market (ebay, etc.) for twice the price.  Right now, I can get all at a relatively decent price.

It’s sad to see kyosho winning on a tamiya specific forum.

However i get why you’d want a optima, I just have too many tamiyas I need to buy before I’d consider another kyosho!

I'm with you.  There are many many Tamiyas I still want to build with the Egress and Avante being at the top of my list.  I love building the Kyosho re re's too and I don't know which kits are going to be harder to come by.

I would not get any use out of any of the buggys listed. I dont race buggys, don't  do shelf queens and they are are all too nice to bash. But if money were no object the Avante without a doubt.

I had to go for the avante😚 but they are all beautiful in my opinion! The reason it has to be the avante for me is purely down to nostalgic memories when I was a boy in beatties on a Saturday with my mum she went off to do the important stuff (like keeping the family going with food and clothes) while I watched the tamiya in store video and drooled over the likes of the avante...........such brilliant memories😊
