Just bought a nearly new Madcap - Advice

Recommended Posts

So I've just purchased a nearly new Madcap that's only been run a couple of times indoors. Just wondering what's the hotest motor I can put in it without risking the diff, and what other sensible mods would you advise. It will mainly be a shelfer with a bit of light use.

Thanks

I used to manange running a tamiya BZ 23t in my astute and madcap without damaging diff. If it is built properly it can handle 23t but not much more I think.

I was going to recommend a "black motor."  That's also 23t.  But BZ is shinier, so I'd choose BZ for Madcap.

Shocks, bearings and a steel pinion are a good start. If you can track down the Astute's metal motor mount plate, that makes a nice addition, though I don't recall any real issues with the stock plastic one. Make sure the stock plastic counter gear support bracket is in good shape and not cracked. Stormer Racing used to sell a metal version for the Madcap, Astute and King Cab, but again, a stock plastic one in good condition will work with reasonable motors. Check the condition of the ball diff and make sure to use proper ball diff grease with it. I feel some of the slipping diffs from back in the day were due to incorrect lube usage. They really can be great little buggies that are very capable. I've personally seen them run toe to toe with RC10s of the day.

I have an alloy gear support in my Astute's gearbox, I think it was made by CRP ?

I agree Saito2 about the slipping diffs, I replaced all the washers, plates and bearings in my Madcap, used the correct lube and didn't have an issue, even with a super stock RZ

What's the correct lube, Tamiya ball diff lube?

Running the Tamiya 11T with standard gearbox + metal plate + metal thing noted above, no sliping, just insane speed
