Really Max?

Can´t imagine there is something you did not already test or improve on the Avante / Vanquish / Egress platform!

Greets to Italy, will for sure need some tips from you during this build,

What I also can say now: Plug and Play Ends with the battery position, as Tamiya moved it more to the right, as it is in the Egress. So there is a collision with the lexan undercowl when fitting. So I have to drill new holes in the lowerdeck for the battery stops and use a stickpack design battery. But I think this is the last modification needed on the lower carbon plate. Hopefully I have some time this evening to continue the work.

Can give you a small update, I finished nearly all the dirty work with making holes and cutting pieces from the carbon fibre rests I have left from narrowing the chassis. Find a nice solution for attaching the body in front. Good to look in the spare parts bin. Took an Avante 2001 body post for the undercowl, which will do the trick, when shortened. So I could also adjust the body height in front, so that it sits parallel to the chassis, and giving me a little more clearance for the race steering set, which is already included in the Vajra kit. Nevertheless I will modify the carbon plate to Avante 2001 spec., which is the latest evolution steeringwise on the Avante platform. Colorwise I am still undecided. I saw an AMG GT TT01 with bright gunmetal on the weekend, that did not really convince me. But it is no buggy, so maybe not a good comparison...

So, some news at least: Sorted out and drilled the new holes for the Avante battery post, to get a more inline battery position, similar to the Avante lower deck. I need 2 times the rear one, front battery stop is the Vajra post / connector for the CF decks. My fault, ordered a second rear post today, together with some more parts for different projects. Also ordered some Clod buster parts for the 89, stay tuned! 2 months ago I got me the rere Hicap set for my Vanquish runner, but these will move here, because of the shiny, new condition. My old Hicap set will be overhauled and go in my Vanquish instead. (have seen quite a lot of use). I always wanted me to get a set of rere Hicaps, to see the improvemnets Tamiya did on them. Nothing overwhelming, just a new "screwed in" lower guide, which is exactly the one from the Sand scorcher Rere shocks. I also think, front piston rods could be 2mm longer than on the old set, but I have to verify this by taking apart my old ones. Quite strange found: the Reres have no ventilated shock cap, compared to the vintage dampers. Why Tamiya? This give s 3 opportunities: Run them as they are, convert to aeration style ala Dyna storm, or drill the ventilation hole as it was back in the days. Anyone have opinions on this?

For the springs, I tend to use my old set with square profile, to get a little bit more vintage look than using gold Rere-Egress springs.

Hi and good afternoon TC!

I feel we (at least me) need some Appetizer photos in my thread, too much single parts for some time. I was not lazy, but was kinda stuck with building the Rere Hicaps. (Needs an extra thread). To make it short, I used 6mm internal spacers inside the rear to get my fitting length to the reversed Vanquish lower mounts. Sorry for the bad photos, but seems I need more light in these days. Got a care package from Seidel today, so I built in the missing battery post, and fitted the shocks with the axles and old front knuckles and drive shafts, although gear boxes are still lacking the diffs. But I was too curious about the complete look. So here we are, some rough shots for you to hopefully feel the vibe:

Looking good! When’s paint day?

Good question Lee, guess the next days. Wanted to wait for my MCI decals, but they are lost in delivery, it seems. Probably german customs again.

Still not sure about the gunmetal thing, so I made test piece with 2 layers, half backed with silver, half with black. (left side) Hard to get a good photo, but backed with silver Ends up too bright, just like another silver. So if, then backed with black. But add a second color to the body? Or still try a box art PS16 first? Still undecided, somehow.

:D  Apologies to those that love gun metal but I can't stand it and I'll share something a restoration specialist spray painter told me once....

"Gun metal is not even a colour.  If you take every colour paint that you have in your shop and mix them all together, guess what you get.... gun metal"

Sorry

I think that's more to do with most cars being offered mostly in monochrome (non)colours these days.

As any artist will tell you, mixing the full spectrum of colours gives you brown. Which interestingly seems to have started becoming popular again on new cars.

No apologies needed Thommo, always interested in different opinions. Actually I saw an Avante in the std., darker gunmetal, that really looks good for me. But also I think that too dark colors don´t bring out the shapes of a body well. I am also tempted to get a second body set. So I could do an almost boxart Job first, and try something braver on the second. But time is pretious before Christmas. I also have to repair the Monster beetle I built for my nephew again.

ESC seems to have a problem.

Take a look at Tamiya PS30 (Brilliant Blue) or Tamiya PS59 (Dark Metallic Blue).

I think these would be amazing as a slant on the original.

Oh no Max,

I did it again!  Maybe you should tell me about all your Avante ideas, and I have to promise to do it different!

To my apologize: I have stolen the wheels and rims from my 2001, which was missing the original wheels, so I put them on. always liked the narrow front tires, so I had to try this on Avante wheels. Just cut the outer ring with a carpet knife, quite easy and quick mod. Now I found some weeks ago a good 2001 Survivor for rather Little loney, which will spend the long searched white rims for mine. Just have to clean them and cut of the rests from the old tires...

Thank you Thommo for the tips and ideas, PS 30 is a great color, had it on a beetle shell years back. Really popping. Unfortunately I made my Vanquish already in (non metallic) blue, so I want the Avante to be metallic, because it suits to it´s luxury design (in my opinion). PS59 would be a great alternative, but is brightnesswise again close to the Vanquish. So I´m now in 2 directions: PS 16 all the way as you promised, to hide the LWB secret before Looking at the car deeper, or / and on a second body the Bright gunmetal in combination with some black graphics, to make it a more lively with a 2 color design. Will see, what catches me to paint first in the Christmas holidays...

Very nice, I'm going to something similar. There are two holes on each side of the rear gear box in the Egress chassis. I'm guessing those holes facility the use of Avante shock towers. Going to install those, the sex aluminum rod ends, and create a Rere Graphite Upgrade Avante with original body.

Thank you GTodd, and cool idea for your Project, too. I am also quite sure, that the holes you mentioned should enable the use of the Avante Rere shock tower. Not sure though, how the original Avante wing mount can be made to fit. Or do you have another wing mount in mind? And quite interested, how you will cutout the body to fit the longer wheelbase, too. I´m quite sure, Tamiya made a proposal back in the day, when you got hold of the rare Tamiya Carbon graphite chassis upgrade set for the Avante and Vanquish. I remember staring at some pictures in my Vanquish manual, where a full option Vanquish was shown showing all the upgrades.

I think you need the undertray of the 2001 beneath it, because shapewise the Egress one is too different to be adapted, but probably you know. And there is a full option Avante in the Avante Squad with all tuning parts from back in the day, you can check for reference. There are also some detail shots of the body from c_smith.

Hope to see your thread starting soon!

Unfortunately I do not have any of my Avantes to check anymore but I do not know why those holes would be next to the gear box, time to order some shock towers and check. I think I have a spare wing mount, and I'm pretty sure it fits the Egress chassis as well. If I recall the Avante 2001, Egres and Avante Graphite chassis kit all utilize the same under tray. I'll do some checking of manuals after the kids are in bed

Keen to know your findings. So far I´ve not had an Egress CF Chassis in hands. Regarding the undertray I have to say you, that Egress got a special one, which is wider in front and perfectly fitting to the Egress body only. So you need the original tuning part from back in the day, which was reused on the Avante 2001, being cut in a lower way in the rear. But I think, Team Bluegroove does repros on this.

Finally post from Nathaniel, very nice, my first custom choice sticker set from MCI. Tried to match the wheel color, quite good match!

Now it Comes up the question, if  I should use this set for the boxart blue body? Or order the more yellowish original reprint? Meanwhile I started painting the rear wing and the undertray in good old PS16.

Slowly making progresses in painting. Purchased a 3M trim line band today for the window. I used it already in another dimension, and it is really nice for masking curved lines. I will try to paint the window frame on this Body, instead of using the sticker. So I started with one line masking, which will be the black part in the end. Then doing a second line beneath on the window side, to make masking with tamiya tape easier, as you just can apply some "hand ripped" pieces. Saves time for me. In the end, I applied for security of bleed through a third blue line in the middle over the first blue tapes, so everything is safely masked:

Afterwards I cleaned again some areas, where my fingers left prints, and started the first thin coat blue. Always the most important part. If you ruin the first layer on a inside painted lexan body, you cannot correct it anymore (at least with PS paints). But I think, you all know the thrill…:D

Today is work day, so I covered the body in some layers blue now. Checked for bleed through, but everything seems fine, you can check quite easily from the outside on the tape lines. I am optimistic to get a decent result on the window. Next I will cover the blue with some silver, to get a more bright result on the PS16. On my Avante 2001 body, it came out quite dark for my likings. Afterwards, I plan to get a black end layer for the Body and undercowl.

First day of the Christmas vaccation, so some Hours left for the Hobby! Worked a little on the chassis and swept the diffs from my Vanquish basher in, which I want to equip with the Vajra ball diffs. Dogbones rear I have equipped with new pins, same for the front cardans. Rest of the parts still in good shape. So the Chassis is looking really 89 period correct now. Then I made some shots of the body parts for you and started applying the stickers. I did not out on the orange parts yet, as I ordered this week a second sticker set from MCI for the second body I want to do. So I will check the looks of the more yellow original Avante Stickers to the customized orange ones. After the comparison, i will decide which to put on the blue body… Sorry for the Quality of the pics, they really do not bring the Right color Impression, which is really great. The PS16 got a real deepness with the 2 color backing. The rear wing is painted, blue, silver and blue again to get the correct color from underneath. But this wing is really pain to spray with a rattle can, as you have to bring the color in the small winglets...
