Jason1145 3986 Posted December 8, 2018 I admit I do like quite unusual Tamiya's, in that, they look different from the norm.... I have a few quirky cars like the Striker and Sonic Fighter and even a couple of those have been done non box art to look even more unique. So when I heard about this new Hyundai i20 being just released in South Korea, and me working for a Japanese IT company I thought..... hmm... one of my Japaense colleagues might know someone in South Korea who can ship it over for me. I few enquiries later and a girl sure enough had a friend in Seoul who was even coing to the UK for a visit in December18 so I was going to get her to bring it for me if she would accept.... but rather than imposition someone this way I kept looking for an easier less intrusive way.... and then found I could buy the shell on it's own ( 93045) from KMarket - a Korean website). More information can be seen in the below thread about weblinks etc. Back to my longer story to make it a bit shorter.... the shell arrived a couple months ago to the UK and I started planning it's look to be non box art..... this is how it ended up... Mounted on a 2nd hand, new to me TA01 chassis ( @TurnipJF I'll be asking if you fancy doing a restoration with some upgrade bits like prop shaft and motor mount etc 0 when you're free lol) Ignore the Ferrari wheels they are jsut what I had to hand to get it sitting right.
Juls1 1661 Posted December 8, 2018 Argh I still gotta do Myn, havnt managed to pickup the paints to try mixing yet.
Jason1145 3986 Posted December 8, 2018 So non box art means white here......... red front arches and side skirts.... and a black roof spolier..... the front splitter done in black is a bit pointless as there is carbon effect decals that will cover this entirely anyway. Black rear diffuser completes the painting
Superluminal 3750 Posted December 8, 2018 Did you brush paint the red and black bits?
Jason1145 3986 Posted December 8, 2018 No they were masked off too, the black bits first and then the red bits
Superluminal 3750 Posted December 8, 2018 Thats some ninja masking!! Looks great.
Jason1145 3986 Posted December 9, 2018 The masking did take some effort around the front arches, but the end result made it worth while. With decals and some appropriate rally wheels and street tyres this i the final look. I'm glad I ignored some of the instructions on the shell like to paint the bonnet vents black, with this white shell they make some nice shapes to show off the vent decals which would have been lost otherwise.
78Triumph 2610 Posted December 9, 2018 That really came out nice!
Superluminal 3750 Posted December 9, 2018 The offset of those wheels works perfectly. Where are they from? Also, they would really show off some nice disc brakes behind them.
Jason1145 3986 Posted December 9, 2018 They are MST adjustable offset wheels, choice of 3,5,7,9mm... brake disks would look good.
Kevin_Mc 411 Posted December 9, 2018 That’s a lovely looking shell, you’ve finished it off perfectly.

Kevin_Mc 411 Posted December 9, 2018 I actually just looked at the boxart again there and reckon your’s is a much nicer design
GreatDane 70 Posted December 9, 2018 How wide is the Hyundai since offset wheels are being used? Your car really looks the part. Nice to see Tamiya can do Hyundais too? Although, with some difficulty of availability for the average rc fan.
Jason1145 3986 Posted December 9, 2018 The shell is 190mm wide.... the front wheels track is 190mm but the rears are about 193mm... I’m just happy it al centred ok and looks ‘right’ I think this looks nicer than the box art, especially as it’s much easier to do this way rather than mixing paints to get the pale blue colour etc. Im worried about putting exhausts in case of a mishap ruining the shell so am calling it a day until I feel braver, good call though it would look nice along with wheel decals. it certainly looks nice sat on my shelf... next for me might be to start a “Rally car” thread with this and my Black Tiger Striped Escort Cosworth... hmm already thinking what else I could add in the future but I need to scan my collection already and see what I have ( my TB03 Calsonic Nissan GTR Just sprang to mind!)

I have wobbly front wheels though with no servo connected... but the shell measures 257mm front centre wheel well to rear one.
motocrosser 1 Posted December 10, 2018 How long did you had to play with fruits... Your body wheel housing (rear) looks not so nice. Take a spray can, wrap sandpaper around and use it to get a nice curve. I know the i20 front housings are not 100% round. Take a smaller can for them. This way you can round the sharp edges from the knife a little, too, looks much better. Overall its a great finish, nice colors! I have body #1575
Jason1145 3986 Posted December 10, 2018 Yeah I could smooth those out a touch thanks for the pointer much appreciated. What this 1575 pls show
