Trying to help a buddy here.

The man broke something in his car and thinks about getting a rere gearbox replacement.

Can the gearbox case be used with the original gears inside alright?

You all have a fantastic Sunday! :)

I should think so.

As I was building the re-released Bigwig, I checked the gear sprue.  It clearly said "1985 Tamiya."  I had to dab it with a marker to see it clearly... And the gears are slightly lopsided.  You wouldn't be noticing it unless you look for it.  It doesn't hamper with operations, but it didn't seem like the mold was newly created by a computer (as they would in 2011).

The yellow sprue says "1986 2008 Tamiya"  Black wheel adapter sprue says "1986 2016 Tamiya"  All of which means that they are simply re-using the old molds.  Unfortunately, I no longer have the sprue for the gearbox.  But if they put in the gear from 1985, the gearbox is probably similarly old.  I think the re-re gearbox would fit.

yep all the molds are originals overstamped with new date (when Hotshot got rere'd) and some got recycling logos added I think

they'll work interchangeably with old except for outdrives afaik

If it's the same as the Fox rere, then the issue with the outdrives is that they've changed the clip that holds them in. On the vintage ones it's a tiny and super-fiddly C clip. On the re-release, it's a thicker and bigger E clip. The re-release gearbox casing has got the bearings in a deeper recess to make space for the thicker E clip.

So, it's all compatible, but you have to use the right clip for the gearbox casing you've got. If a vintage model was fitted with a re-release gearbox casing, it'd also have to have the vintage C clips replaced with re-release E clips to get the clearances correct. The outdrives themselves can be reused.

Like I said, I know that's true for the Fox. I think it's probably also true for Hotshot/Supershot/Bigwig etc., but I'm not 100% certain on that one.

Yep your all good @mongoose1983 , same gears and gearbox's . BUT just use the E-clips in RERE Gearbox's ,

With  vintage or re re out drives .  This i know as i have been saying for years now & have been playing

with them in my runner Boomerang . Just remember you can put in 850 bearings on the outside of the gearbox's ,

as they will go right too the 1150 . It helps the out drive as well :D ..  1150 inside as normal & slip in 850 in the

hole on the outside , slip in the outdrive through the 850 to 1150 & put on E-Clip and your good to go .. Good luck bud ..
