I'm a big fan of the Tamiya cans too, but I hand paint and airbrush too. That Transit was airbrushed as was the RC10 I did for Peter_B:

The RC10 needed airbrushing to get the fades and blends, you couldn't really do it with a can as the flow/pressure isn't controllable.

It depends what you want to achieve really and how much time you've got!  :) I've painted a bunch of Transformer figures in the past that would arguably have been a lot quicker to paint with an airbrush but I painted entirely by hand, mainly because I was learning new techniques as I went along and because I wasn't in any rush.

That came out amazing ... man i might just send you my beetle...lol I have never painted lexan before so i am scared I am gonna botch it. So much masking and it's all backwards.

Cheers mate :)

Honestly, it's really not that bad. Make sure it is perfectly clean, use good quality masking tape (I really recommend Tamiya, the white curve tape is very handy and the yellow tape is awesome,) make sure all the edges are firmly stuck down (rolling a cocktail stick along the edges works great) and apply light coats - don't aim to cover it in 2-3 goes - think 5-6 and it should come out great.

Here it is - the final build instalment......

so following the last of the clear coats the whole body was wet sanded with 1500 grit wet and dry to remove the surface imperfections and get a really nice flat top surface.Next up I gave it all a polish, repeated the wet sand in a couple of places, repeated the polishing etc etc until it was super smooth and super shiny.

Then I masked up the window frames and borders and painted those semi gloss black and then did the windscreen valance vents in flat black. Final job was to paint the side markers clear orange and the rear lights clear red.

After that, I masked up the outside and windows and sprayed the inside matt black.

Final job was putting everything - very very carefully - together.

I wasn't going to post the final pics as I thought I'd let Richard be the first to see it finished, but he's seen them now, so he said it was ok.

Again, the pictures I take are pretty rubbish, but it really does look lovely. Hopefully I've done such a pristine vintage body set the justice it deserves.

It's now safely back in its tool box cargo transporter and will be starting its journey back to Canada tonight!

Fantastic work! Now that the labour dispute is (kind of) over at Canada Post, that Clod bod should make it in good time - although it would be even better if you went with another carrier! :P

This thread has been fun to follow, and quite insightful for bodywork tips. I hope to apply some of them to my own build projects!

Photo studio back in the hall then eh? 😁

:D:P:lol:

Mrs. Jon was making a mess in my 2019 studio so I had to revert to the old one. Unfortunately she didn't leave it in the state it was found by her, so not only did I end up having to tidy it all back up, I have to go through the hassle of deducting her pay for not following the terms of use. And last time I cut my finger trying to slice a peanut in half.....

Jon it looks amazing I truly admire your skills.

Thank you so much. I put off painting these bodies for so many years I just wanted perfection and you truly provided it.

Now I need to think about what body to send next.

It was a pleasure and privilege to do for you Richard, and thanks for your very kind words and patience.

I really hope it meets your expectations in real life (and gets to you pretty soon - didn't know about the Canada postal strike sorry!)
