I've never had a problem with masking residue being left on the shell after removing the tape.  What kind of tape are you using?  If you use Tamiya tape it shouldn't be an issue.  Also, I would buy a bottle of Tamiya Polycarbonate Cleaner.  It's the best stuff for removing any leaks under the masking tape that get through, or overspray.  It's worth it's weight in gold IMO and you'll wind up with a neater paint job.

Could not disagree, if using proper masking tape. Tamiya tape comes usually of without residues, if you lift it up. If you try to peel of an edge, there can be sometimes a small edge with glue residue. But that can be wiped off with Spiritus for example. Also good for cleaning fingerprints. I painted many shells with PS paints without cleaning the masked areas after removal of tape, never had an issue.

I use isopropyl alcohol for degreasing at every stage. A little on a rag works wonders

As long as your paint is dry, do what Nobbi said. ;)
