RM MK.5 Porsche 956 Rothmans - restoration / build up

Recommended Posts

I was always looking for a Racing Master MK.5 Rothmans Porsche 956

A few weeks ago there was a possibility to buy a chassis on ebay - slightly used :D but with many rare parts that are not available anymore.

In the last days many boxes have arrived with parts from all over Europe; differential from Austria, the new FPR decks from Greece, the Black Motor Indurance from another guy from Greece and the manual speed controller from Hong Kong. The body is a re-re New Man from Tamiya's RM series and the decals are from MCI. The outcome should be an almost new Porsche 956 Rothmans #58042.

Here are the first pictures of the starting point

screws have seen better days ....

This is why I have bought the chassis - these are the required parts, anything else will be new old parts or is still available like some compatible RM01stuff.

Interesting to see the old Racing Master chassis getting restored/built up. The old-school measuring caliper looks the part for this project :P

I have never seen a 956 shell hacked up so extensively, either...

Though pan cars are inherently simple, I do look forward to following this project :) There is much I do not know about these cars, and your restoration/new build is a great opportunity to learn more from a member working on one!

Hey, thanks for your comment ! The caliper is a heirloom :P - yes these pan cars are very simple and robust - unfortunately, it's quite difficult to find period correct parts - for this one in particular.

I'm still looking for one of the aluminium front body supports . . .

Great job Lowspot!

Been eyeing 956s for 30+ yrs :( still avoiding that rabbit hole

RMs are simple but fragile for their speed, so every used example is found in pretty bad shape. Plus there's a fair few parts unique to each model so any proper restoration is even harder.

Same with Lola... restoration not worth starting, it's easier to build from NIB ^_^

don't say that! I'm just bought some bits to try and do just that   Mind you, I should know better, I gave up a Lola build once before.

thanks guys ! Restoring this beauty is pure pleasure for me - I hope to continue at the beginning of this week, the decks and motor are stuckin' somewhere.

Today, the Tamiya RS-540SD Black Motor Sprint has arrived. it is the official hop up option for the Porsche 956 and was used also in the CAN AM LOLA

The original RS-540SD Black Motor Endurance is a bit slower but is one of the rarest motors from Tamiya (blue bell end).

It was only made for the RM MK.5 Porsche 956 (and later available as a hop up for Frog)

Should arrive with the two FRP decks within the next days

I'm watching for a complete body set with the extra Rothmann decals. There is one in the US but I'm not willing to spend so much money for it.

I'll start with the re re NewMan body and MCI Rothmans decals. Should be ok for the beginning.

On the power switch there is a simple resistor to reduce the voltage from 7.2V to 5V for the receiver - direct connection from the speed controller . . . . funny :-)

Finally the body kit has been painted and I'm quite happy with the result. The decals are a mix of MCI & New Man Porsche (re-re)

This is one of my all-time favourites. I was surprised by the heavy weight of that little 1:12 scale.

Thank you for looking !
