humbug 36 Posted January 6, 2019 Anyone a fan of 90s era touring cars? I've almost finished building one of my 300zx projects. Please post some picks of what you've got :)
Fabia130vRS 2098 Posted January 6, 2019 I am a big fan, but the bodys I want havent been re-released yet, I am looking forward to a STW A4 or the Audi TT (I know, not really 90s ) the alfa 156 is nice, but the Audi is iconic to me, with 4x4 that got banned later giving the audi so much advantage over FF. would fit nice on a tt02
humbug 36 Posted January 6, 2019 Gotta love how those fat tyres tuck <3
Fabia130vRS 2098 Posted January 6, 2019 Are these HPI rims? If yes, they look amazing, also having an eye on them for a long time! You painted them? also a lot of equipment you have there, is that a trinity rotor balancer?
humbug 36 Posted January 6, 2019 yup. painted the hpi wheels. They grip so well compared to standard tamiya options! battery and servo (apart from other hop ups) is pretty much the only parts that aren't period correct. I do have nimh and nicd packs, just not in the photo. I wish I had a balancer as I hand wind a few myself. what you see in the photo is just a comm lathe, so nothing too fancy. Superluminal 3750 Posted January 6, 2019 Looks like a homemade 3d printed case?
humbug 36 Posted January 6, 2019 Its just an LRP IPC Super Sport (12T limit). It was actually gifted to me from my old motorcycle mechanic boss in Japan. The case and wires were hacked up really bad, so 3D printed a new case for it in clear. It actually glows when the LEDs light up. Pretty shnazzy eh
Yalson 514 Posted January 6, 2019 I used to race touring car shells on 1:10 buggy chassis BITD, before touring cars were really a thing. Some examples: Peugeot 405 Turbo 16. Used on a Kyosho Turbo Optima Mid LWB for a winter series on a purpose-built tarmac track close to the airbase at Mildenhall, Suffolk. The LWB Mid didn't seem to object to the higher CoG too much, although it was obviously a bit more oversteery. We fitted Belsport Platinum foam tyres to it when it was dry and some obscure brand of heavily treaded rubber tyres when it was wet. Which it was frequently. Pontiac GTO. Used on a Kyosho Turbo Optima SWB chassis for a winter series on temporary circuits at a tarmac car park at the local sports centre. Everything I said about the LWB Mid above doesn't apply to the SWB version. I can't remember why we tried this. In hindsight it was a really dumb idea. The overhangs on this thing were way too long, the wheelbase was too short, the body mounts were too close to the middle and the whole thing flexed, flapped, oversteered horrendously and was basically a liability. The SWB Mid was twitchy enough as it was. A big saloon shell on top just made it worse. Especially since the tarmac surface was too rough for foam tyres, so we had to make do with various forms of slicks and treads which never gave enough grip. Pretty shell, though, and it looked great until it started moving. BMW 318i. I got this as a prize for winning that year's off-road summer series. After the Pontiac proved to be hopeless, I got this ready for the LWB Mid – seen here partially constructed in the foreground – to take over. I did a terrible job of it, as can be seen by the state of those wheel arches. It never got used in the end. I bought a Parma Osella PA9 1:10 on-road shell from a clearance bin at my LMS and for some reason the powers that be said this would be fine to use instead. I am sure I still have the Osella somewhere, but it wasn't in my parents' attic with the rest of these shells. Sauber Mercedes C9. Blatant opportunism ahoy. After the race controller foolishly said that racing an Osella PA9 as a saloon was fine, a thought came to me. The SWB Mid handled badly because the overhangs were too long and it wasn't stiff enough. What if we could get it as low to the deck as possible, stiffen the suspension to the nth degree, fabricate some new suspension and body mounts and fit a sleeker, lower body with some lower-profile tyres? We'd basically have a 4WD 1:10 on-road car, right? If we could have got the suspension and mounting points right it would have run like a train and wiped the opposition out. Sadly, life intervened and I got interested in beer and girls, making cold Saturday mornings in a car park seem less attractive. The body got painted, but never mounted. I can't imagine anyone runs 1:10 buggies under similarly odd conditions anymore, so now I doubt it ever will be. Nice paintjob, though.
Yalson 514 Posted January 6, 2019 Incidentally, if anyone is interested in what the Parma Osella PA9 looked like, this is it. It didn't even have a roof. Mine was black. (H/T to the Classic RC blog).

That's how i did it back in the day, when i wanted to create a certain livery. With no mci around you had to buy different decal sheets ( those were the days when you could buy NEW 959 decal sheets from your LHS ) to get to you desired decal or i made them myself with those rubbing letters. By the way concerning the critical mass some camel decals are from the Lotus 99t.The wheels are from the Optima Mid and in the drive train i had parts from AYK.

Nicadraus 6200 Posted January 9, 2019 My only 90s TC. FF01, upgraded the chassis to FRP and some turnbuckles and aluminum wheel hex hubs. It originally had a Renault Clio body then I replaced it with this Toyota Corolla WRC body. Ran it a few times then she became a shelf queen since. I recently upgraded the damper to TRF and replaced the bearings with rubber sealed type. Planning to run it again as a rally car this year once I complete my current project. Will get her a new body for bashing too because I don't want to waste the Corolla body.
