Classic touring cars 90s era

Some of those Parma bodies were made for 1/10 scale pan cars and some were made for 1/10 scale buggies. Even in the 1990 Kyosho catalog you could find Parma bodies, I think the red/white one is a GTO.

Yeah, that looks like a GTO shell. Bonnet bulge, stupidly long overhangs, rear window with buttresses, long rear lights – lovely looking thing but totally hopeless on a buggy chassis. Not sure what an RS200 would  be doing hanging out on an oval, but I suppose it takes all sorts. I also love the fact that the heading impressively states "DIRT OVAL RACERS" above a circuit which self-evidently is anything but a dirt oval.

The Nomad looks like it's set up as a drag racer, which would be hugely entertaining given its short wheelbase. Radio Race Car in the UK used to have regular drag racing reports and the cars all used to be about three feet long.

Yokomo Super Scale series, a car before the touring cars era. 2 wheel drive, fully independent suspension with oil shocks. Belt drive transmission with ball diff, (!) no gears, super quiet when running. Crashback front end with rubber rings like Schumacher Cat. Was available as Nissan R91CP, Jaguar XJR14, Ferrari F40 and Honda NSX (one of my many soft spots ^_^).

The HPI RS4 Original was my first real good touring car. I saved for weeks to be able to buy it the week it came out. Still have my original car although I’ve spent a small fortune on hopping up the chassis the way I wish I could have afforded to back in the day.  Body and chassis aren’t completely done. I found even more bling to stick on the chassis so I will tear it back down when I find the motivation.

I have an almost full option TL-01 that I got back in 2001 I believe. I still drive it regularly. I converted it to brushless/Lipo a few years back and it is such a simple fun car to drive. It still remains competitive against tt-01 and tt-02 but certain parts are almost impossible to find or too expensive. I need to take a few pictures of it. It currently has an HKS altezza body (it originally came with the Opel V8 that I proceeded to trash within a few months) but I see a new body for it in the near future.

This thread inspired me to explore the dusty realms of my loft to dig out my old kyosho mantis GP that i think i bought around 1996.

Its from the 90s and its a touring car!!!!

And its absolutely minging - i obviously didnt clean it before condemning it to the loft as the whole thing is covered in oily gritty slime. Nitro fuel is disgusting stuff.

Might strip it down this weekend and clean it up being as its been in the loft for about 15 years.

Resized_20190112_143230_937.jpeg

What was supposed to be a weekend of stripping down and some gentle "cleaning" sort of escalated.

The cleaning involved completely stripping the chassis, engine, gear box and clutch down fully into all its individual parts and fixings. Which I did actually clean.

Then the putting it back together involved;

New ball bearings throughout  (to replace old brass and plastic bushes)

Nos Kyosho GX12 engine gaskets (from Australia)

New Os glow plug

Nos Kyosho Mantis damper mounts (from USA)

Set of Tamiya CVA mini dampers left over from my xv01 (to replace the really pants torsion spring suspension it had before)

New Tamiya touring car dish wheels

Nos Kyosho med & soft tyres

New silicone fuel hoses

New kyosho air filter

Nos Kyosho Mantis two-speed metal transmission and clutch bell (from Australia)

Two ABS component boxes as paniers for the battery pack and receiver (to try and keep them less oily than before)

A new copper pipe and silicone hose exhast that will hopefully be long enough to keep most of the oily exhaust residue from covering everything in site which it always used to do. Held on with a rubber p-clip and a tamiya plastic bearing (ghetto mod?)

A month and a half later its nice and clean.

I too had the two speed trans in mine. That car was a rocket back in the day. Regret trading it for either a Yokomo or a TC3. I still have both somewhere. I will have to dig them out for the thread.

These are great! I love the look of the NSX' with the realistic wheels. I'm still looking for a nice one. Wouldn't mind having either one of the models, all the bodies are nice.

HPI Sprint EP,  being slightly outside the 90s but i think it deserves to be pictured here because of its DNA being from the HPI RS4.

holy zombie thread revival :P

its good to see the ta02 still getting use. After getting some proper track time on mine, I found it was severely under geared, even with the largest pinion. I'll need to get the high speed gear set for it :)

Also love the old gemini. marty from mcm would be keen :)

I miss the old days of Australian Touring Cars.

Different classes running together, the cars had soul and character, and was all about the racing.

That has been lost since the advent of V8 Supercars. Bland generic cars validated with the fancy term 'homologation', and the soap-operatic melodrama has changed things for the worse.

It is now Nascar with right hand turns.

Don't get me wrong, the fantastic engineering and tactics are so meticulous and precise - which I admire and appreciate. (Except for the DJR Penske Teams 'tactics' of late )

But you can't buy anything vaguely similar in a showroom. Does the old saying of win on Sunday, sell on Monday still apply?

Grats to @redzone for keeping the soul alive. :)

Only when racing becomes Australian Touring SUVs...!?

Nobody buying Aussie 4dr sedans anymore, last remaining survivor Commodore soon to be killed off to join the dead Falcon/Pintara/Magna/Valiant/P76/Austin1800.

Today's F1 has lost its magic too.

Funny story, I know Al aka Turbo Yoda from 3rd year mechanical Tafe, he tried to buy my 75 coupe for Marty a while back but it owes me way too much money to sell cheap and i'm kinda attached to it lol. I think they're gonna put a Duratec in it or something.
