Hi all.

Fisrtly with my Turbo Optima two things bother me. One is that it isn't that fast- looks like the red label Kyosho motor had a hard life though. I would like to buy a new motor- I can go as low as 12 turns. What do you recommend- I want stupid power!! :)

The second thing is that sometimes the receiver doesn't pick up that well causing intermittent throttle and it goes out of control. If I fiddle with the aerial, you can provoke it to do it. I took the Fuitaba handset apart to inspect and all seems fine. I wonder if you could suggest certain things that may be to blame.

Thanks for your help- I didn't post on the Kyosho threads as it is more about the reciever and good modern motors.

Stupid power would be brushless and as many battery cells as you can stuff in your chassis, like 10. I believe there is a UK company (modeltech or something) which makes a nice brushless set. Very expensive.

Wouldnt recommend putting "stupid" power on an old and collectable car like the Turbo Optima as spare parts are hard to find, the chain or later belt (didnt tell us which one you have) wont stand this for long and the car will never be as reliable and fast as a modern one. Better buy a used cheap modern runner and use the Optima with period correct equipment.

About the receiver, check if the capacitors are still soldered on the motor and it doesnt have much "sparking", as well try to reposition the antenna cable iside the chassis and/or change the crystals.

Cheers

It sounds to me that the problem is one of the aerials.

You do not say which aerial you fiddle with, If it is the transmitter aerial, then the soldered joint that connects the fitting the aerial screws into to the circuit board has probably cracked. Just remove the aerial and use a small soldering iron to melt the solder. When the joint cools down to should have fixed it. If the problem is the receiver aerial the easy option is to replace it. You will need a small soldering iron for this, do not try it with any general purpose iron, you can ruin your receiver. You will need a piece of aerial wire, your LHS wil usually stock it. Dismantle your receiver case, and undo the knot in the aerial. Cut a piece of wire to exactly the same length as the old aerial, unsolder the old aerial and replace with the new one.

It is important that the new aerial is the same length as the old one, if the lengths are different the receiver might need retuning. As you are using the receiver in a car having your receiver retuned is not necessary if the new aerial is the same length as the old one.

Thanks guys. To answer a couple of ?'2 that have emerged. The motor is definitely tired and you can see some arcing when you power it. What I want to acheive (it has a belt conversion by the way) is for it to be quicker than it was stock- so an equivelent or better motor from that period. I am running 8.4 volt power. The aerial I tampered with was the handset's. You can easily rotate the aerial and I doubt that there is a great connection with the screw on the circuit board- I will investigate further. So any other motor suggestions?

Thanks again

Yup its modeltech. If you want to see it running just watch my touring car at snetterton! 15 minutes under full racing is possible whith a motor thats faster than a 12 turn Trinity d4 i had. Massive though is a downfall! Nowhere to put it in a modern chassis [:(]

A nice Kyosho Le Mans 240 from that era, the fastest Kyosho back then but not so fast as modern low turns that would wear out your transmisson quickly... [8D][^]
