Given these and unsure what chassis thet are ?

Recommended Posts

Been given both of these chassis by a mate of mine. He's unsure what chassis they are and which shell would have originally been on them, or which shells would fit on them. I have a new Porsche RSR shell but the chassis wheel base is too long. Can this be shortened. Sorry for all the questions. Thank you in advance.

TA-01 (the one with black dampers). This one has the upgrade drive shaft, nice! Body Lancia Delta will fit.

TA-02, maybe also a TA-01 (the one with blue dampers)? Looks standard.

Clean both and you have a fine pair.

Both TA01. Blue shocks were on the very early kits, if I recall. Wonderful cars to run and tinker with, all strengths and weaknesses well-known and well-documented. Probably not worth much money in that condition, but both of those can be made to run, and run well, with a little work. Any "standard" touring car body (257mm wheelbase, 190mm wide) should work fine, with the "correct" bodies being Tamiya rally cars from the early 90s: Celica GT4, Lancia Delta, Ford Escort, etc.

My advice: Clean 'em up, get some new body shells and some inexpensive electronics and go party like it's 1993...

2nd that, TA01, great cars. Apart from bearings and an ESC I would replace the "coat hanger" drive shaft and motor mount if you plan to put in anything hotter than a sport tuned.

Strip them down and put all plastic parts in  the dishwasher for a cycle. Will clean them right up.

I would replace the plastic motor mount with a metal one as a matter of course irrespective of motor choice. The plastic mount on the TA-01 I restored for @Jason1145 was broken after minimal running on a silver can!

Which RSR? 934 or 911? For both you'll need shorter TA02 tub.

934 was sold on TA02S, which is TA02 with rear arms from TA01. Wheelbase is 236mm

911 should fit to TA02T, which is TA02  with TA01 arms, but rear arms flipped to increase wheelbase to ~250mm (not sure, what exact wheelbase is, Tamiya says 255mm, but I'm certain it's closer to 250)

It is 250/251mm, Ive put a capri body on a ta02 using that method.

Weird, I measured 255mm. How did you get 251mm?

Not sure🤔 I never measured it just believed tamiya saying that the capri body is 251mm and it fits perfectly now on the Ta02 with 01 rear arms!

I will measure it in a moment

TA02 with TA01 rear arms is 239mm, like the Porsche 911GT2 and the TA02S Lancia re-release.

Both cars are TA01, but it looks like the one on the right was a bit of a parts-bin project. It has a TA02 front shocktower and DF01 (black) rear gearbox. It also has a hardened propshaft, which is a nice upgrade :)

That's the TA02 short chassis configuration that was also an option with the TA03RS/FS chassis. I get 237mm when measuring these, which is why the anniversary 934 RSR body is a poor fit at 230mm.

The TA02 tub with TA01 rear arms flipped, gives you 255mm... or 250mm?

ANd my apologies to the OP for continuing to interrupt this thread :D

Could be the toe in of the rear arms shortening a bit!? 🤔

The toe is the same because they use the exact same arm and upright.

Have you measured from axle to axle with the wheels removed?

Are they ta01 rear arm on yours

Yep. Straight From the TA02T kit: TA02 tub with flipped TA01 arms = 255mm  I measured my TA02SW just for a "control" measurement, and it came out to 237, with TA01 rear arms in standard orientation.

I don't know how you got 251mm :(

(ETA: I was confused and had to amend the flipped/unflipped designations)

Yep your right mine are unflipped🙄

Edit: mine ARE flipped just double checked both 01 and 02 manuals to be sure. 🙄🙄

Unflipped TA01 arms with TA02 chassis is the TA02SW, which is 237mm.

I know, this is really bothering me, lol. When I measure the TA01 arms alone, I get a 14mm difference between the orientations, which gives a solid 237 & 251mm. :(
