The Cool Wheels Thread

The two of you, myself, Volkswagen, Ronal, HPI and the Nineties as a whole really ought to be ashamed of ourselves for letting this happen in the first place and especially for bringing it up again 25 years later. :D

LOL I always thought that was a high point for HPI, when they offered neat options like the VW Polo nitro mini RS4, and these dead-on accurate renditions of some weird but well known wheels. For some reason I always hated these with a passion when I saw them amongst the other popular choices at the time, but they've actually grown on me. Nostalgia I suppose ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Here they are in white:

Nice 😎 You should totally post those in the favorite tires thread. I've always had an odd admiration for them. Reminds me of what our classroom crayons looked like after I secretly slid them onto the counter-height heat register

Seriously though, I always considered buying a set just to put them on a multicolored TA01.

I like your pairing with those very classic 90"s paint schemes 👍 Have you posted the Civic elsewhere and I just missed it?

Hi OCD,

most of my 90s touring cars are featured in this thread:

I think the Civic was on page 4

I will add some more but have no time to do so at the moment........

As promised, here's my collection of plated wheels from the 94xxx series of limited releases. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find the part numbers for the Civic and Levin items, but decided to include them in this group anyhow. All of these are already some of my favorite Tamiya wheels, but the satin finish metal plating really takes them to a higher level of realism in my opinion.

Limited silver plated wheels (left to right): 94047 BMW M3, 94022 Skyline GT-R, and 94??? Tom's Levin

Limited chrome plated wheels (left to right): 94102 Alfa Romeo 155, 94??? Mugen Civic, and 94052 Mercedes 190E (Gold)

Still looking for the silver plated Calibra and AMG Mercedes wheels from this series -- Please let me know if you happen to come across a set you'd want to sell B)

Why yes, I believe I those are the ones :D and they look quite nice with that body. if you don't mind me asking, what is that body anyhow? Do I see the 1/8 scale Sonax Tabac decals with an aftermarket 1/10 Mercedes body? I'm intrigued!

I actually saw another TC member post a set of these wheels that they had located on eBay UK, which tragically is blocked from view here in the 'States. Kills me that after more than a decade of hunting for them they appear for sale from a place I'm forbidden to see. Although I'm still certain another NIP set will appear somewhere, someday. Fingers crossed anyhow ;)

That's right, that is an aftermarket racing body from back in the day, very thin and light one of the first generation race bodies for narrow touring cars like TA-01 or YR4. The decals are also aftermarket 1/10 scale, I think from Carson or maybe from  Christian Keil, he was the german Associated and Yokomo importer of that time and did run one of the first national narrow touring series, the Keil-DTM. He was also participating in several Reedy Race of champions and world championships of that time.

Wow, thanks for this follow-up. I'm really keen on stories involving this era of racing. Outside of the pictures in old magazines there's just not a lot of documentation about the hardware available at the time. That body does look super-thin, but it's still amazing to think of how much effort went into producing a shell that would be popular with a extremely narrow group of enthusiasts. I hate to imagine how few of those body sets were produced. Maybe in the double digits?

And those Sonax decals are fantastic  I had absolutely no idea they existed and would be delighted to find a set today... however unlikely that may be  They really look like above-average quality, all things considered. Did you buy all of this new and do the build yourself? It's a very nice model at any rate!

I really agree that wheels make a big difference.

I think the HPI MX-60 wheels and tires are great. Lots of wheel options with different finishes and offsets. This was on an old X-press roadrunner with an ABC Hobby 510 body that I did.

Yes, bought, built and painted decades ago by myself. I tried to imitate the original iridescent paint job before the iridescent colors were available, and i think iridescent green/blue are still not available. It was done by painting a very thin layer of metallic green backed with layer of blue.

But i dont want to hijack this thread, so here i found the plated Calibra wheels also in my collection:

Those aluminium monster truck rims are lovely! I am a big fan of the Egress wheels too. I love them on my Thunder Dragon. That said, the other set of wheels I have for that are high up on my list. These are full random, Chinese ebay vendor specials that I bought about 10 years ago when I briefly flirted with getting my Thunder Dragon running again.

My Thunder Dragon 20181117_160624

Full boggo 2.2s but I REALLY like them. So much more character than disc racing wheels.

That’s one sharp looking Orange shell.

Orange makes it look somewhat like a Lamborghini.

That front shock tower, are they custom made?

Thanks! Too much orange is only just enough. Yes, it's a custom front tower to allow twin shocks without having to cut the shell too much. This is a version I did for 75mm shocks to see how my aeration dampers would feel. (answer - brilliant)

Right, let's kick off with some of the cool wheels in my collection.

Kawada Ferrari F40 style wheels in normal and wide (32mm) version with centercaps to go over the wheelnuts.
_09B32482.jpg

_09B32522.jpg

Cross Racing SSR MK2R wheels for foam tires. Still have to get some fitting tires for it, but they would look great with the Tamiya Castrol R32 GT-R body, as the 1:1 version came with MK2R's.
_09B324710.jpg

_09B32442.jpg

These are a classic and might've been mentioned in this topic before. The HPI Turbo disc wheels, inspired by wheels such as the Ronal Turbo's. I really need to find me some more sets so I can put them on a car.
_09B32342.jpg

One of my Tamiya M03's I've build using pretty much every Tech Racing upgrade available. Ofcourse that means I also need wheels from Tech Racing. I managed to find a couple different sets, but these are particularly cool. Two-piece Revolution style wheels. Too bad I only have the pair.
_09B34752.jpg

And these 3-spoke wheels in normal and wide version.
_09B35222.jpg

The last set of M-chassis wheels I want to show are these unassuming Tamiya black minilite wheels. They are the carbonfibre reinforced version and they are super tough! I love that Tamiya released some of their wheels in this material.
_09B35762.jpg

I think that's enough for now. I will show some more cool wheels later :)

These Tech Racing three spokes are so amazing!

Here are some (only some) of my top picks:

The classic Tamiya mesh wheels in black, as seen on the ProMarkt Mercedes:

img6439_05082010140042_1.jpgimg6439_05082010140042_1.jpg

Prolly the first wheel I ever fell in love with. I remember them from my dad's TA-02, hey would just black out the whole wheel arches like an endless void, absolutely sick.

img195_18062003134845_2_1100_.jpg

Also, the Ford Mondeo wheels. Super weird, super cool.

le5xG_Zkf8_hQLkixEz4Fh_ZGW_dEteQT-nUE1Aq

Recently got these Scale Dynamics Watanabe RS8s, super crisp casting and details, perfect gun metal finish. Standard size outer diameter with small  wheel size and integrated tyre side wall.

VuAocUdinQs6QCrMpweP4c4T2pYXNKVXGLG2jpGD

Speed Star Racing MKII, by Surging RC. My favourite real wheel in M-Chassis scale.
