Stadium Thunder

Recommended Posts

Having "ummed and Ahhed" for a while (see some of my posts) I finally went for the stadium Thunder. Thanks to the nice people at Tamico one arrived at a very competitive price, even including shipping. It will be built using a sport tuned 540 and will be fully ballraced. It will also be fitted with either standard wheels and tyres or Proline Dirt Hawgs depending on surface..

So Here goes2019_0405stadiumthunderbuild0002.JPG.cf54758f611f1e57a180de49bc23734c.JPG2019_0405stadiumthunderbuild0003.JPG.5c95cb7b7bffff962641210e60aaef90.JPG2019_0405stadiumthunderbuild0004.JPG.3295d9bb059b0263258e952bd4f5a57f.JPG

Not going into too much details as there are lots of in depth builds of the Blitzer chassis. I have to say its a very eay satisfying build. Typical Tamiya. The wheels have been sprayed with Black Hammerite paint. They look better in real life.

As you will see have inverted the front axles to get rid of bumpsteer. After this picture I dremmeled away the end of the screw that was sticking out along with the edge of the lower suspension arm

Cetral tub along with basic wiring. Cut out plate to get ESC in flat on floor and so I can get at the buttons

Now all joined up

Had to have a try!!!

Decided to take it out for a run without body

Learnt two things!!! If you flip a blitzer which is not difficult with out a body you loose the rear body mounts, and secondly the Dirt Hawgs have no grip at all on grass. Might as well be on ice.

Shocks all done and ready to roll.

Body details to follow

Finally finished the body. My way of cutting out bodies is first to put masking tape along all of the cut lines. Then I draw them in with a soft pencil.

Then I get a swann morton scalpel with a brand new 10 blade and score along the lines. There is no need to cut through the plastic. I tend to use an old bit of a leather belt behind the body to support it and just in case I push too hard with the knife. Once youve gone all the way round all you need to do is bend along the lines and it will break. Then you can work you way round until all the unwanted bit falls away. Any rough edges can be sorted out with an emmery board

Then its on to paint2019_0405stadiumthunderbuild0023.JPG.dd0dc7b766e328b4a2a000babade6be4.JPG2019_0405stadiumthunderbuild0032.JPG.08be8e411178e1f4b3fae0d6706e3ddf.JPG

All done, well not quite as I have another body which is going to be done as a Redbull racing truck. I have just received a set of NASCAR redbull stickers from MCI along with some metallic blue paint. Have to cut body as above then get on with masking and painting.

Love the tires!  I still have the Blitzer/Thunder on my 'desired' list.

Some great tips on body cutting there, thank you. Wish I’d read this before attempting my Asterion body!

You kind of read my mind. I knew about the Bearhawk from your thread I didn't realise the falcon was the same. Having said that I'm not a great "buggy " fan so am more likely to experiment with different truck/ beetle bodies:rolleyes:

They are mounted on Blitzer wheels sprayed with hammerite black. Didn’t realise there were different types of dirt hawgs?
