List your extra shells?

Recommended Posts

I have 7-8 cars that have not been painted yet.  And I just ordered an extra.  It all started with "Maybe I should buy Lunchbox body for Midnight Pumpkin..."  18 years later, I'm afraid it's getting out of hand.  Anybody else feeling the pressure from unfinished shells?

1) MP + LB

2) Subaru brat comes with 2 bodies. Maybe the Lexan body will go to TL01B?

3) Grasshopper w/ extra body

4) Ford Bronco body for... TLT-1, I think.

5) Fox w/ extra shell

6) Hotshot with w/ 2 extra bodies

7) Lexan Blackfoot (maybe go for F150 Ranger livery?)

8) Bolink Rough Rider Lexan clone.  I don't have SRB, maybe for DT02?

9) Sand Scorcher body for... ORV?

10) Blazing Star body for Manta ray.

11) I'm still keeping an eye out for DB01 shell.

Non-extra original shells to be painted: Sand Rover, Zahhak, Boomerang, Frog, Konghead, Alfa Romeo Giulia, NSU Prinz.

[Edit: I forgot Fiat Abarth 1000]

Yes! Very much so! I despise super-magic-mystery-wish-pray aspect of painting (plus god and planetary alignment) required for a good job. I have a back log of shells to paint and buy to finish my collection.

1.Bruiser body

2.Blackfoot body

3.Super Champ body

4.Boomerang shell

5.Hot Shot 2 shell

6.Super Sabre shell

7.Grasshopper 2 Super G body

8. yet unknown shell for my Bennett Clod Buster

9.Clod Buster body

10.Custom painted Clod Buster body for my Sassy Chassis Clod

11.Super Shot shell

12.Midnight Pumpkin body

13.Original boxart RC10 shell

14. RC10 Champ shell in some neon 80's/90's scheme

15. Madcap shell

16. Super Astute runner shell

I've probably got to throw $300 into shells, bodies, repro decals and correct paint for all this. I just remind myself, when its done, it will all be over (until the next project springs to mind).

4. Vintage Chevy Clod needs redoing

5. Grasshopper

6. Grasshopper Black

7. Grasshopper II

8. Bruiser Clone w/ 1.1 scale monster Hilux decals. Might go on a monster truck. This or number 11 for another TXT-2

9. 88 Chevy  w/ Excalibur decals in Clod size

10. 88 Chevy snoop nose w/ Thunder Chicken for another monster truck

11. Proline Hilux might w/ 1.1 scale monster racer Hilux decals. Might go on a monster truck

12. New Bright Raptor body for re re Blackfoot

13. OE Dynahead

14. Bruder re-body on Dynahead

15. Finish clear coating Super Clod

16. Finish decals on M05 RA Alpine 110

17. Calsonic R32 Skyline, no chassis picked out

18. An R34 Skyline, no chassis picked out

19. Fiat 1000tcr, waiting for an M08

Ferrari 313 came with 2 bodies, haven't even opened it.

That's the short list. Somehow I keep buying stuff though. 3 more show up this week too, An SMT10 who's original body will get sold, Lancia 037 and Wild One.

Hope I can help you feel better about the never ending list😁

20. Forgot about the box art gold pan RC10 too

I got a couple of kits to paint before building, that’s the new method - paint then build. There’s a couple of others where I either need a new shell or the body needs fitting worked out but that’s it.

Painting before building sounds like a very good idea.  Reminds me of "zip-up-your-flies-before-the-belt-buckle" method.  I forgot to zip up a couple of times. So I simply switched the order.  I suppose that's along the same line of J@mes's method.

NSU Prinze TT has "Jägermeister" too.  Has anybody tried it?  The alcoholic beverage?  What is it like?

Black Liquorice after taste. It's really quite awful but some people really enjoy it as a shot. It is right up there with Tequila, an aquired taste.

Meh, it's really more of a liqueur with all of the added sugar... and it's a rather low 70 proof, whereas most tequilas are around 80 or more. I enjoy the anise (licorice) flavor, but Jäger has way too much sugar for my personal liking.

Fun fact: Jägermeister literally means "hunter master" in German, which is why we got all of the fun orange-colored race cars -- Because the "safety orange" color is synonymous with hunting apparel. B)

Coming from the real car world, where cars and parts require lots of space and are very hard and time consuming to move around I've learned to:

- never start a new project while still working on one

- always start with the body

- never ever stop in the middle of a build unless you're waiting for parts...

- ...which, of course, you ordered immediately when you found that you needed them...

- ...and of course, from the supplier most likely to deliver immediately, regardless of price, location or shipping costs

- keep runners separate from builds, but treat them the same, if they break, fix them immediately before breaking another one

- aim for 100% fleet operational readiness, all the time. If it doesn't run, fix it. Don't t park it unless it's completely ready to go again. Never ever put it aside to "sort out later", or that kind of stuff will start to pile up on you.

- break down every sub-assembly or job into steps that can be finished on the same day you started them. Human minds work better that way.

- never buy stuff that can't be operational on its own, like extra bodies or cars with major parts missing, unless you have a clear idea of what of what you already have you're going to junk in exchange or how you're going to complete them.

- throw stuff out, do not hoard random parts

- keep everything unbuilt that you've failed not to hoard in the box, sealed, out of sight, until its time comes

It's a bit of an "empty your mind"  thing I guess, and I've found there are lots of people who can handle doing 30 projects in different stages all at once, but I for one certainly can't.

Especially the "throw stuff away" part seems to work very differently for different people. Some people get inspired by piles of stuff, and come up with amazing ideas by just looking at what they have laying around, but I need a "clean sheet" approach, an empty table. If I don't know exactly what I'm going to do with something, then it has to go.

All my cars are ready to be run. Put a battery in and go. Every single one of them. All my unbuilt kits are sealed, stacked up and stored out of sight. My workbench is empty. My tools are in their drawers.

Yes, there are three boxes slowly filling up with parts for three upcoming builds, but I'm not even thinking of starting any of those until everything is ready, and today I'm not starting anything else either, because I'm going racing today, so I'll need the space and time later to fix whatever I'll inevitably break.

I use an average of £15 in paint per shell, so that's £2130 in paint costs. It takes me about three months of RC time to do them to my standards, so another 142 will take me until I'm 75. Better get cracking!

This thread has helped reduce my spending on RC this month, last night I took a sand scorcher body kit out my basket before completing an order, it had been sitting in there a while with the idea of putting it on a monster beetle type of thing. Thank you @Juggular :D

All good advice, most of which I seem doomed to ignore... I'm especially bad about  not throwing things out, particularly the leftover parts form a build or the "dregs" leftover from a lot buy (all the little orphan parts that don't fit any vehicle I have, but are "too good" to throw away). It's time for a harsh cleanout of things like that, but I'm too busy starting new projects or puttering with half-finished ones to get around to it...

As for the original question, I believe I only have 4 unpainted body shells at the moment: an M-chassis VW Golf, an M-chassis Mazda MX-5 Miata, a Lunchbox, and a Subaru Brat hard body (part of an unbuilt Brat kit). And I have some sort of plan (or at least inkling) of what I want to do with them.

I wish I could start a project, see it through, and no move onto the next one until it's finished, but my mind simply doesn't work that way. If I'm deep into a project, focused, and enjoying myself, that's one thing, but if I lose interest or I can see the project drifting off or going badly, I can't "push through" just for the sake of finishing it. It goes from "I want to" to "I have to," and there are enough things I have to do. Hobbies should be something I want to do.

That doesn't mean that I won't go back to something, sometimes even years later. I also have gotten better about writing down a project idea instead of jumping into it. I have pages and pages of notes about things I may or may not ever get around to building, but getting them down on paper at least gets them out of my head so I have a chance at focusing on the thing in front of me.

So true.  Hobby should be fun.  I should remember that there is no duty to "finish."

I figured if I stopped getting new ones, I'd complete the projects.  Like a recovering alcoholic, as soon as I said that, I get M05 NSU Prinz--because it was cheap.  I might as well accept the fact that I'm an RC addict.

I thought about keeping it in the box like S-PCS.  But that's like asking a cat to resist catnip.  Try as I might... Resistance is futile!

Yikes. That's like 120 cubic feet or 3.55 cubic meters of shells, roughly equal to the volume of water in 24 average-sized bathtubs. You'd need 10 Tesla Model 3's to have enough trunk space to fit them all. If you managed to stack them 6' high, at average storage space rental rates in my area, you'd spend roughly $250 per year in storage fees, totalling $9000 (if you manage to not let the total number of shells exceed around 180, ever) by the time you're 75, and that's not adjusted for inflation or price increases. Storage costs will add roughly $63 to your $20 paint expenses for a total of $83 finishing cost per shell, excluding labor. That's almost $12000 just to finish what you have, without figuring in anything you'll doubtlessly buy in the 36 years to come.

That's roughly 1/3 of the cost of a new Tesla Model 3, and then you'd only need 9.66 more just to transport all those shells. You could, however, buy one brand new Chevrolet Spark for that kind of money, and... you know what, forget it. Having 142 RC shells is actually by far not the worst way to spend $12000.

lol...  However, "no math" applies to mere mortals like me.

Since TruckNorris has top notch skills, I'm sure he doesn't have any problem selling completed shells.  If he gets $120 each (and subtracts $20 for paint), I'd say Truck Norris is sitting on $142,000.  I have a feeling that he might enjoy doing the math.

Um, that's true "no math" right there, or shouldn't that come out to more like $14200? :D

Then again, $120 for one of those shells? There's commercially available mass produced 1:18 die-cast stuff out there that's not nearly half as detailed, nowhere near as unique and doesn't even move under its own power that easily costs more than $120. I don't know if there's a market or a price for these handbuilt miracles, but personally, if I wanted one of these, I'd be prepared to spend way, way, way more than $120.

I have to agree, if I had those skills and 142 shells, I wouldn't worry about math or no math either.
