Tamiya 57409 - Lunch Box Mini (SW-01)

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking that the stock motor + 2S LiPo gives me enough speed to enjoy the car, but if I ever need to replace the motor... ;)

Yes. I'm using the sport tuned 370 motor. Works well and packs a punch.

It doesn't run well and stutters if you're using batteries, so you will need to use a battery pack.

Thx

Also wondering if you need to solder on the Capacitor  between the poles. I bought the rtr kit and it didn’t have it on. Pretty sure I heard it somewhere that the 2.4ghz radios don’t get motor interference?

My upgraded lunchbox mini with Bearings, TT motor, aluminum pinion, rear steering bars, harder rear springs, red chassis.

This chassis needs a clodbuster body!!!

4wd, 4ws, it's begging for a clod shell next.

I bought 2 kits for my boys, but I'd buy another with a mini clod shell. I'll probably buy another one anyway. Lol.

So,.... What body are you expecting to see next?

Nicely done @Exitor!

Which part numbers did you use for the upgrades?

I also picked up the RTR version of this and it sports the red chassis as well as a green fuse looking piece that you swap out instead of the red on within that black cap piece.

....what is this thing? :)

It's on the instructions but it's in Japanese. I swapped it out but the speed didn't really differ. I'm willing to bet since it's using AA batteries to power this thing...

That’s a cool idea, QD shell might work?

Nope, that would be way to big. These are close to 1/24 in scale.

I was thinking Tamiya would produce the whole range? Clod, lunchie, Monster beetle, blackfoot, pumpkin. Go on Tamiya, you know we want you to.

Possibly the 1/24 Wild Mini clodbuster would work?, but they are quite rare.

I just ordered a Wild mini Lunchbox so I will be able to compare sizes soon.

The sport tuned motor works well with 1300mah Nimh AA batteries. No stutter.

Got a bunch of el cheapos from Daiso whilst I was in Japan. Cost about a buck each and works.

Is it just me or is this a pretty tricky build for something that seems to be aimed at young/beginner users?

Its not to tricky just a little bit fiddly but if building lego over Christmas has taught me anything, it's little fingers are way better at assembling small things than me!

T'is fiddly alright.

Plus an odd niggly feeling "how's these PLASTIC gears gonna survive?!"

A 1/24 model of a Chevrolet Fleetline would be a good start.

Just fitted a lighting kit to my boys lunchbox mini.  First one?

Luckily, he is a much better driver than me. Lol. He's 8.

How does your rear steering work out?

I set the tie rods to manual with the upper arms connected which as you might know, this provides lots of toe-in on the rear.

So I straightened them a bit before properly testing it. Now it steers the wrong way on a wheelie.

Going to add a bit of toe in on the rear and see if that fixes it.

Does anyone have the yellow gears and clear chassis yet?

Just added a little toe in on the rear, not as much as manual suggests and the wheelie steering is working brilliantly now. It does need to have some toe in on the rear to work properly.

Sometimes, when I pull full trigger on the radio and try to wheely one after another, the car just stopps and the ESC beeps than it runs just fine after a few seconds. I use it with the stock motor and four AAs. Is it just the normal power lack that some of you wrote? I use TBLE-02s esc with the lipo cutoff turned off...

Yes, I had that very same issue but with the sport tuned motor until I switched to a lipo battery, however I didn't have the regular stock motor in for long before I could notice if that was affected as well.

The AA batteries struggle a bit on both my boys cars. No stalling though.

But I have added a full light kit to each one. ( That was fiddly, squeezing all them wires in that tiny body.)

Also may need the harder springs with all the extra weight.

Got hobbyking 45amp brushed ESC

Standard motor

And a choice of 2s lipo or 4x AA 2500mah rechargable batteries from hobbyking.

The lipo is only 460mah, it does last a while and powers everything fine, but a 1200mah lipo should fit.

I use the same lipo battery as for the dancing rider, a 1700mAh receiver battery from hobbyking... works great for the brushless set..
